No-one can beat Liara, but I might make a Shepard in the future that wouldn't be compatible with her. Not so fussed on Ashley (can't forget her being mean to Liara) if it were up to me Miranda would become a s/s LI. Samara would also be interesting or Morinth...
...wait already tried that, didn't end well.
Before I start, I must emphasize: IN MY OPINION.
I can understand Ashley being suspicious and mean about Liara. Liara is the daughter of one of Saren's henchmen, and only the natural "paragon" bias of role playing games makes it even remotely acceptable for Shepard to trust her so soon. Also, until now, most of Ashley's experience with Asari was probably exotic dancers. Plus ME1 was pretty clear about how humans are the new kids on the block and made no secret of the fact that the other established Citadel races look down on them.
Later, once Benezia dies, it is Ashley who suggests that Shepard look on Liara and expresses concern for her emotional well being.
To be honest, I was NOT impressed with Liara in ME and would have discounted her as "typical multi-color sci fi chick" if not for LotSB. In ME2 and LotSB, Liara gets and air of independence, grows a backbone, and demonstrates that she can survive on her own without Shepard as a LI. She stops being a Shepard cheerleader, she snaps at Shepard (and Shepard snaps back!), and she loses that "Oh, Shepard! You are SO AWESOME!" look in her eye. It was almost like a DA2 rival romance, only better written.
Now she is a character worthy of being a friend or lover for my Shepards. I still haven't romanced her myself. Liara got her hooks into my BF's red head female Shepard.
EDIT: Damn, but I used "also" too much.
