It's also possible the engine differences mean ME's characters generally look better.

Not really. I'm don't really like long hair or feminine faces (which is why I don't like any elfs lol*) and that's not the kind of stuff a better engine would change. But it's obviously a personal preference.

*dark elf I made in KOA Reckoning demo was very masculine and hadsome though :police:

People complained that the 'archetype' of an m/m LI in Bioware games was too pretty, too slender, too feminine or too promiscuously typical of stupid stereotypes.

I don't think Anders was pretty (referring to your other post) or any of those things. Yeah, he was a bit cheesy at times, but even so. Never seemed like a stereotype to me. It's the feathers, isn't it?

That, and the kitten.

I think the main focus was on Fenris and Zevran, but you have to admit - Steve is miles apart from any of the other m/m LIs.

I think that was a delberate thing, the same as the writing.

DA Fuuu?! S/S romances got cut from ME2 because WALMART complained?! >:o

I see it more like : S/S romances got cut from ME 2 because Fox News(and many other channels around the world) over hyped and sh*tted ME 1 as "Game Porn". Posted Image

So I'd be surprised if Walmart was the only firm come up with similar attitude.

Also can't help but think if "cencorship" played any role in that decision.

In short, in my opinion ME 1 became a scapegoat and both Bioware and players suffered because of it.

Fox News itself did not attack Mass Effect. They brought on an outside opinion which did. They also had someone defending it.

I said Fox News because it usually called like that around the net. I am not from USA and that "Porn Game" term derived from our news. In short somehow half of the opinions, unsurprisingly negative ones, became more public around the world.

Bad news spreads faster than thr truth.

What. Since when are kittens indicative of anything. D:

Well, yeah. Agree about Steve. But the downside is, his appearance doesn't make him all that compelling (to me, at least). As for Zevran and Fenris, yeah, especially Fenris, whose facial features weren't effeminate, but the combination of shiny tattoos + white hair + outfit + body type... he needed to be toned down. A lot.

Unfortunately I think it's a case of the feedback being taken too seriously. The solution to complaints of too many pretty LIs wasn't to make the next one deliberately not pretty.

I wonder if Walmart will threaten to pull the Muppet Movie dvd because Fox complained about them too. ._.

What's to say the direction for the art team wasn't "make Steve as combat-hardened as Shepard, as weary, an ordinary man who has married and settled down". The anti-Zevran.

Even so they didn't have to make him look so generic that people have difficulty telling him apart from background characters, in a video game that's just lazy design.
Like I said I'll wait and see if Sam is a regular woman (who can barely be distinguished from generic female alliance personel)  for once then as well, because all the pretty and sexy ladies in Bioware games are also not realistic, where are the regular girls, don't they ever have any feelings for our characters? Not every woman is a supermodel or a beauty queen either you know?
Isabela looked a lot less conventionally pretty in some her previews as well (there's even a conversation between her and Aveline left over from it) but they were quick to change that and even in her less pretty look she still very much stood out from every other generic female NPC.

He's an abomination who poses a risk to the innocents (including those on his own side) around him. It's safer simply to kill him.

This. He's willing to have people slaughtered for the greater good. Hell yeah I killed him.

Not surprising, the ME team is usually pretty extreme in how they incorporate feedback.

That or they were really putting their point of making him defy stereotypes before him appealing to the players. Which pisses me off, considering every female character "had to look sexy".

Heh, I felt kind of stupid when I rivalmanced him on my 5th play and he told me the "special potion" never existed.  I felt so betrayed.  I kept wondering everytime I played it before that, "But what about the poition?  What happened to it?  Did it not work?" Duh.

I hate Anders from the moment he showed

Bah, Templars are all evil ar**holes and deserve to die
When Anders showed up in Awakening, I thought he was nothing but an
Alistair clone.  I thought he was OK but I was kind of bitter that
instead of my beloved Alistair being back in the game I had this stupid
clone instead.  It was the Sir Pounce A-lot scene that made me like
Anders.  I did like DA2 Anders 1000 times more than Awakening though,
although I did wish there was at least some of the old Anders' humour at
the beginning before he became too dark.

Seriously.

How about defying some sterotypes with the females BW? Why all the female LIs gotta be bombshells? Why not an Aveline like LI?

And no Jack doesn't count. She has the best looking face in the games.

True enough. But what about Fenris, for example? He's willing to have mages slaughtered for being who they are.

I think he makes it pretty clear there was no potion, no matter if you rivalmance him or not.

Agreed, except for Alistair. Killed him nearly every time, except that one time where I let him live so I could watch him get wasted in The Hanged Man.

And I spend most of the game changing his attitude about that. (yay maxed rivalry!). Plus the only mages he ever hurts in my games are jerkwads that deserve it. He's not all cuddly buddy with mages (doubt he ever will be) but he never raises his hand to an innocent mage (in my games). The most I can do with Anders is get an "OMG WHAT HAVE I DONE!" after the fact.

I wish there was an option to kill Fenris when you meet him, as well as Sebastian at the end.

You get 3 chances to tell Fenris to GTFO. If that's not enough...

Plus...why would Hawke kill Fenris when they first meet? He's not hurting you or anyone innocent. Hawke killing him is unnecessary. You're not getting paid for it, there's really no point.

Most he's doing is insulting you. Big whoop.

GTFO isn't quite the same as killing him outright.

He used you as bait and put you in danger. Hawke has (or can)  killed for less.

Whatever drama queens.

@C: Eh Hawke can't kill Peatrice, Merrill or Anders when I first meet them and he has a lot more reason to kill them than Fenris.

Oh the bait thing. True enough. (Though where does Hawke kill someone for using him as bait? )

I tried a bloodthirsty run and pretty much everyone Hawke kills did something to him/her first or hurt an innocent.
