If and when the riots start I'm bailing out of the forums. It's not worth the effort; let them rage it all out and achieve nothing other than displaying how shallow their engagement with the game must be in order for it to be broken so quickly and easily by something relatively minor.
The root of the argument that character has been altered for fans is distinctly flawed when used in regards to immersion being broken because, if one is actually immersed in the game and viewing things solely from Shepard's perspective then one must accept a degree of the unknown in regards to a character; Shepard simply does not know everything about 'x' therefore in a roleplaying/immersion sense it is simply new information being revealed about a character through interaction as it has occurred previously.
However, if the source of the complaint is a meta-game observation or analysis, based on information and contexts outside of Shepard's knowledge (ie. we view as the omniscient player who views the world of Mass Effect through their particular lens) then the argument for immersion being broken cannot be made because immersion was never achieved precisely because the game was being played in the Meta.
A player's construction is wholly limited within the game by the game, and anything outside of what the game specifies is possible but not within the game. By this token, if someone says that 'character a cannot be romanced by the same sex because they're straight, immersion broken' then the problem is not that immersion was broken it's that they were so immersed and because of that, post-insertion of self into fantasy-verse, they misjudged or did not recognize the unknown factors and were proved wrong by the game, which is the game's prerogative because it is independent of player or player character assertions. The fact one can be proved wrong in one's assertions about characters from an in-game perspective is total fulfillment of the immersion. Obviously the other option is that the player took on an Omniscient role and therefore was meta-gaming and no argument can be made for their immersion being broken because the meta-game invalidates immersion.
Obviously there is some crossover in cases of players engineering certain situations with meta knowledge but doing so within a roleplay perspective ie. Wanting to kill Grunt so sending him as the escort but not loyal being justified by Shepard reasoning the crew needs a strong and hardy defender, but ends up overestimating Grunt leading to his death but the crew's survival.
I hope that all made sense.
