I was under the impression Bioware had decided that characters weren't going to be hitting on the player. If that isn't the case, then I apologize; I'm just going on the information I've seen floating around. I haven't read any of the leaked scripts because I don't want to be spoiled, so I didn't know exactly how the conversation went.Collider wrote...
Why do people keep assuming this?So I'm pretty sure, so long as the player never steers a conversation in that direction, Ash/Kaidan will remain straight in your games.
Many Mass Effect (and Bioware) love interests can flirt with the player character without being "steered."
Ashley, Kaidan, and Liara do this in ME1.
Miranda, Tali, Jack (arguably), and Garrus do this in ME2.
Looking at the script, it doesn't look like you have to steer Kaidan to get him to admit feelings for male Shepard.

I know some people wanted this but if the rumors are true they really over did it with the pandering this time. 2 new exclusive S/S romance options, Kaiden and Ashley are now both suddenly bi, Liara, and most likely the new James Vega Character will be bi. Is that everyone or did i leave some out? I guess "everyone is bi" is becoming a staple in bioware games now.
Not everyone is bi. First, no one is 100% on Kaidan and Ash. And to be fair, those two really only count as
one option. Second, Steve and Samantha are gay, not bi. Third, that still leaves Miranda, Tali, Garrus, Jacob, Jack, and Thane as straight. Granted, I'm pretty sure a romance can't be started with them in ME3, but...they're still there, and they're still straight. And lastly, rumor has it that Vega isn't even romanceable.
So we have... maybe Kaidan/Ash, Liara, Steve/Samantha and possibly Vega as s/s options. Then we have Miranda, Tali, Garrus, Jacob, Jack, and Thane and possibly Vega (as we have no clue about him) as o/s only options. Anywhere from 2 to 4 bi/gay characters vs. 5 or 6 straight characters... I don't see how this is "pandering."
And if this sounds rude or anything, I apologize, because that isn't my intent. I just don't understand why some people consider this pandering.
Well based on those numbers and taking into account that homosexual relationships are far less common the fact that there are a nearly an equal abount of s/s romance options is pretty unrealistic. So yes I think it's pandering. I just hope the romances don't suffer the like they did in DA2 in there attempt to satisfy "everyone" by making all romance options bi.
Well, if we're going to go that route, then you also have to take into account that there are other people on the Normandy. Whether romanceable or not, and whether or not you can even have an actual conversation with them, they are still there. With that, it actually makes the amount of bi/homosexual characters more credible... We have maybe four out of how many people on the Normandy?
I do see where you're coming from though. You don't like that a character, in your opinion, has been changed, and I completely understand that. I can actually sympathize, as I was outraged when Hendel was suddenly turned straight. However, a romance is optional, and from what I understand, they're all initiated by Shepard and only Shepard. So I'm pretty sure, so long as the player never steers a conversation in that direction, Ash/Kaidan will remain straight in your games. And from what I've heard, the romances are all very well written. So I don't think you need to worry about that.
Well it's certainly plausable that there may be a some random crew on the normandy and throughout the Mass Effect universe who have various sexual proclivities but still the idea that there would be such a hi concentration of key people with these leanings who Shepard is so closely involved with it what is unrealistivc. I know you don't "have to" engage in all of the romances if you don't want to. That was never my point. Still I would have prefered fewer romances in general with more energy put into them.

Again, it's just as unrealistic for the straight side of the fence as well.

Well perhaps a bit but certainly not "just as unrealistic" because naturally there are far more people with straight leanings so it makes sense that there would be a much higher concentration of them around.

Where do you draw the line between appropriate levels of 'unrealistic' and inappropriate levels?

Maybe Kaidan is just joking around in a bromantic way. Keep things platonic and nothing ever comes of it. And presto, your Kaidan's heterosexuality is still intact:wizard:!Collider wrote...
Right, the player chooses to initiate the romance, but that doesn't mean love interests can't flirt before hand.

As far as Shepard is concerned it isn't difficult to imagine why the women he's close to would fall for him. Being a charasmatic leader who has saved the galaxy a couple times can do that for a guy.

I would say any flirting is a part which constitutues the entire romance package.
That's how I interpret it at least.
Therefore, in ME1, Liara openly expressing interest towards Shepard is part of the romance and it's in a sense 'auto-initiated' as far as the game mechanic goes.

You can turn that argument around and use it to explain why why there are so many guys willing to go after him in order to explain the unrealistic amounts of m/m romances.

No you really can't unless you belive straight guys can suddenly "go gay" and I'm going to guess you don't. So assuming you either have those leaning or you don't the overwhelming majority of these men would have straight leanings they wouldn't be interested in a romantic/sexual relationship with a male Shepard no matter how much they respected and admired him.

But we were talking about women who wouldn't be attracted to Shepard at all but all of a sudden they are b/c he's 'charming enough'.
