Here's the one convo you are apparently have with Ashley:
You've got to be kidding.
This is worse than ME2.
This only happens if you romanced Tali.
My Renegade Shep did that but he has plans for Tali (sometimes spoilers can add flavor to your game). However I can say that Tali's romance one of the worst I've seen to date.
Before we start a war with Tali fans, which is NOT my intent, I just want to say that MY comment was as much a saterical remark about he perception of Ashley as a racists as it was about xenosexuality.

a) is not necessary to assume since he can be chosen to be alive in a new game, therefore, whoever hasn't played the previous games and wants a male squadmate (for romance reasons or not) will choose him, and those that have played ME and were holding out for Kaidan saved him anyway and/or can do the same. If they didn't then...they weren't interested in him, I guess? Perfectly valid. No matter how many options there are, people will prefer some and dislike others.
You can also argue that people will lose out on something if they do just one playthrough. For those that don't pick Kaidan, they'll just miss out on Kaidan. Doesn't mean he's not there. And if they're really interested, they can read up on it and fix that. Most of your points are rather similar, actually.
As for BioWare not being worried, I agree.
And finally as for why, because maybe a lot of s/s fans wanted Kaidan for years unlike James and they wanted to do it as a service to the fans (just like any other romance, really)?
Yes, Mass Effect is full of choices, but as BroShep on Virmire Kaidan wasn't anybodys lover. It wasn't a choice to save or blow up player characters love interest back then. And the player couldn't know he was going to become a love interest. So multiple playthroughs, starting over, informing yourself - It takes some effort. Really depends on what kind of fan service this is. I'm just thinking about the ME2 statistics, about what Hudson said, how only half of all players even played all the way through the end (which I know is not bad compared to your average game). How many play the game more than once? How many of those actually make different choices than in their previous playthrough? Maybe they just play another class or another difficulty with a few different choices to see what happens. It quickly narrows down to the well... "hardcore" fans I think. No matter what you call them, how many of them care about m/m romance? And if it's fan service, how many of those fans actually want specifically Kaidan? I just... don't know. I can't figure out Biowares intentions on this one right now. Perhaps it's just too much speculation, too much we just don't know.
For that first part, I can only say - if being a potential LI is someone's only reason for saving a character, then they have nothing to talk or complain about concerning that character. If you're willing to save Kaidan only because you can **** him, maybe it's better that you don't do it at all.
And really, if the developers aimed to shape the game so it accomodates the largest percentage of anything from the statistics, and the largest percentage only, then this would be a game with no choices (although something could be said about the amount of choices present in it as it is, but that's another discussion).
"How many" isn't and shouldn't be the primary question in game development. Wherever there are choices, one of them is chosen the least amount of times. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be there. Notice which thread we're in, after all.
And fan service is fan service. If it's fan service, then the fans asked for it and BioWare decided to deliver. Maybe out of sake of fairness, considering the past. And you know a lot of the m/m fans have been hoping for Kaidan for years.

@ Luca Stern -- Although Gaider didn't give numbers, he indicated that even he was surprised on how many players role played gay male Hawkes in DA2. Perhaps Bioware figures making Kaidan "bi" or pan-sexual will improve the chances that more players will see Kaidan in ME3. I still figure most will see Ashley, but if even a small increased number of players choose to replay the series or restart ME3 with a live Kaidan then Bioware may feel better about the amount of time and effort they took to develop the character.
That is quite interesting. Maybe they add ninjamanced Anders fans to that? I only did 1 gay play through on DA2. All others was with Isabela, which is around 5 or 6... or 5,5 as still need to complete last Warden Carver one.
While we're at it, am I the only one finding Leliana's m/f romance forced? It always seemed more natural to me as F/F.

This. I know it's not representative, but Kaidan always won by far in all the polls about who people wanted s/s, sometimes even in the ones with f/f. That can't be a coincidence.
edit: Well I meant Solid's post above.

There was NO ninjamancing going on with Anders. Hitting on someone =/= ninjamancing. And if not clicking the huge golden heart in conversations was impossible to some people, they are either
a) retarded
c) wanting to get in a relationship with Anders

Anders was no ninjamance. Believe me, I played DA:O and ME1, I KNOW what a ninjamance is (Liara and Leliana, I'm looking in YOUR direction). He assumed that a refugee/apostate who he had lead into a Templar ambush in the Chantry was being unrealistically nice about the whole thing, so maybe this Hawke guy likes him? Huh? If you say "no," he runs off pouting. No harm, no foul.
Anders. The loudest, least stealth-like, blundering ninja EVER.

Liara was a ninjamance? It was always Ashley in my playthroughs who just decided her and Shepard were together. Liara had very clear 'not interested' dialogue.

Okay, this is actually kind of cool. I thought of Garrus, Fenris and Minsc and it guessed each one (I should probably think of characters other than Bioware's for a change).
EDIT: And this is kind of hilarious (to me).

Actually, one of her "Not interested" responses is bugged and locks you into a romance you realize you're in only after another major planet. The bottom one, where Shep says he/she's completly uninterested.Progressive_Stupidity1 wrote...

Which I did use. It may have been a bug, but in a game where I (for the hell of it) killed of the Ashley I was was romancing at Virmire, Liara still came to my room.

Just to be clear, I was talking about players in general. Personally I always save Kaidan, because I talk to him (originally started this presuming he was a m/m love interest), Ashley on the other hand I don't like, actually never bothered to talk to her on the ship, because of the way behaves, knowing that she's going to die anyway.
Fan service, well, if they say, they do it because the fans want it, it should really be what the fans want, shouldn't it? So I'm just not sure Bioware has an estimate of how many m/m fans wanted specifically Kaidan to be gay/bi or more importantly how many didn't like Kaidan. Generally it's safe to say the m/m fans wanted a m/m option in the game, but if the majority wanted this option to be Kaidan is hard to tell. I guess the best thing to get an idea would be to analyse the BSN, but obviously lots of players don't come here.
Numbers aside, I can see how m/m fans here wanted Kaidan since the first game. He was the only other man and it was the beginning. Many on the forums find Jacob boring. I wonder if BW may have misconluded that Kaidan was the one, when really there was not much alternative apart from Jacob. Or maybe he really was wanted by most m/m fans. Perhaps BW wanted to "reward" those m/m fans from the beginning and give them Kaidan after all. I can see how that may be the case, but I don't like this explanation.
