We've probably discussed this a bunch of times before, but I'm a bit curious what others have to say about this topic.
Why do you think a lot of ME fans aren't too fond of Jack? What is it about her that makes you like her over other characters?
I'm a bit late to this party, but I figured I'd throw my two cents in.
I was originally put off by Jack's attitude. She seemed over the top in a not-so-good way, like the writers were trying too hard to make her into the "bad girl." I almost didn't explore her character much further because of that, but I'm glad I did. I still think the writers took her a little too far, but that's just personal opinion, and it's a minor quibble at best.
I think the thing I like the best about Jack is how her character evolves over the course of the game. She remains the same brash, loud, foul-mouthed woman throughout, but her walls start slowly breaking down as the romance progresses.
Her entire life has been filled with people who use her, take what they want, and leave her. She's got severe attachment issues, abandonment issues, trust issues, take your pick, but they all make sense. With Shepard, and by extension the team, she finally finds a place of (relative) stability. A Shepard that romances her doesn't just take, doesn't just use her. He listens, without any other overt expectations. At least, that's how I personally see it. He doesn't fit into Jack's expectations about how her world works, and it throws her. That's why she's so emotional when she comes to him before the suicide mission. She's finally letting all her walls down, letting herself be vulnerable to the one person who has earned her trust.
I've heard people talk about Shepard having the "healing dick" when it comes to Jack, but I disagree. I feel that it totally fits Jack's story arc for her "healing" to take place during the romance, because it takes such an emotionally intimate (not talking about sex, you pervs...
While I fully agree that some degree of "healing" should have been available to a friendship path, I honestly think that it makes sense for the romance to be the way it is.
