Mass Effect 3 - Aftermath Part 3
Shepard slowly drifted back to sleep as the doctors inserted a needle and started a line of sedatives. The pain numbing once more as his body gave way to the medication as it dripped through the IV. For the first time in months Shepard actually slept peacefully. Earth was safe, humanity was still alive, and the Reaper threat had been eliminated. Vague memories of the last few minutes of the attack had started to trickle back to him as well. The child had been a illusion the whole time. Part of Reaper indoctrination attempting to seep into his mind, praying on his fears and his weaknesses. It certainly explained the dreams and the voices. Harbinger outside making one last desperate grasp at Shepard’s resolve and get him to alter the use of the Crucible’s energy weapon. The indoctrination clashed with his sub-consciousness spurning the image of the child’s phantasmal being to coerce his decision. The threat of destroying the mass relays, the idea of the Geth or EDI being lost forever, it made his head spin considering what might have happened if he hadn’t held to his initial plan. The relay exploding would have slaughtered everyone in the Sol system, never mind all the others as it chain reacted across them.
Hey, ****** you going to sleep the rest of your life away?
Jack’s voice cut through the cloud of sleep once more, causing him to stir once again. It’d been three days now since the attack. He was still badly battered and broken but he opened his eyes clearly now, as his vision was returning. Jack was sitting in a chair beside his hospital bed with a smug expression on her face. Curling the corner of his mouth in a bit of a grin Shepard managed to cough out a bit of banter in return.
You might have to wait a bit longer on that getting laid request.
She rolled her eyes a bit as she shook her head.
Don’t worry Shepard I only need one part of you to work for that. Hell you don’t even need to be awake if it was that bad.
Jack leaned forward with a smile and lifted the sheets at his lower half. She made a few questionable sounds as she clicked her tongue.
Well it looks like they managed to at least save the important parts. You can barely handle me when you’re at one hundred percent anways. I rape you now like this I might finish something even the reapers couldn’t do.
Shepard tried not to laugh. It still made his ribs hurt if he breathed too hard.
Well, there are certainly worse ways to go.
Jack stood up and moved over to sit on the edge of the bed next to him. She smiled lightly down at him as she laid her hand against his.
You better believe it.
Shepard pushed himself up on the soft mattress . His muscles were stiff and speed in any attempt of movement was going to be hard to come by.
So Chief Nought was it now? Why don’t you get me up to speed on whats happened.

It is interesting to think about how each LI would react to Shepard waking up in a hospital and seeing them there, after the events of ME3. Not only LIs, his friends, too. What would they say to him, or not say, and what does it say about them that they'd wait by his bedside? Which characters wouldn't be there, not out of lack of caring, but because they know Shepard can take care of himself?

I like everything about that exchange.... except the use of the word rape in Jack's line. Given her history... Maybe, "If I tried anything now, I might finish what the Reapers started."

Does anyone not like the idea of Jack becoming a teacher? If so, why? What do you think she should have been doing, instead?
I didn't mind it. Biotics gotta stick together, you know? During Jack's loyalty mission, you could hear the worry in her voice when she said, "Shepard, they started up somewhere else". She didn't have a good childhood and didn't have much connection with other children, but she didn't need that to know she didn't want other people to be abused; she showed she could care about others in vulnerable positions.
While Jack doesn't mention anything like that in ME3 (and should have) I see more of a parallel with Kaidan's backstory and Jack's present. If one reads the codex, human biotics aren't exactly looked upon with favor, and given their abilities are only really useful in combat scenarios, I could see how some biotics might be pushed past their limits for their powers. More than anyone else, Jack would know about limits.
And also, it's better than Miranda just redoing her loyalty mission from ME2.

I like the idea, and the re-design... but at the same time, I miss the old Jack and can't help but wonder if she really has it in her to become this Alliance social butterfly we see in ME3. I can understand that she'd want to save other biotics the pain of imprisonment and torture by Cerberus. But, even though Shepard and the Suicide mission made an impact on her, Jack has many emotional scars that have chiseled her the way she is. She couldn't change overnight... A conversation with Javick made me ponder that.
I can't help but think about Lisbeth Salander, the violent introverted hacker in Girl With a Dragon Tattoo who throughout the 3 books shows growth, yes, BUT at the same time she stays very much the same (introverted, antisocial, complexed and afraid of getting too close to someone and getting hurt). That's what I like about these kind of characters, even though they are clearly damaged they still find a way to survive against all odds, kick ass and save the day.
I like how Jack looks in Mass Effect 3. I would have liked to see more of her old self.. e.g. swearing -- It's part of who she is, so I wouldn't have changed that (the students aren't little kids, they're teenagers; they can handle it). Her new role as a teacher more or less fits. I would have had her steaming mad at Shepard for leaving her for 6 months without a word. Remember, being broken-hearted is the one thing she tries to avoid at all costs -- it hurts too damned much. Look at Lisbeth Salander, she's avoided Bromkvist for the last two books, cursing him for letting herself fall in love with him and get hurt.
I would have given the opportunity for Paragon Shepard to grovel and prove himself to Jack, and show her just how much she means to him. Renegade Shepard would use the tough love option, lol!
Anyway, that's my two cents. ^^
I still love Jack, and I'm happy to see her in ME3 even though it's for such a brief amount of time.

I dunno... I guess I just see her character differently then you Ymladdych lol.
Well, nothing wrong with attributing a little schmaltziness to Jack on occassion.
Yeah, no...there's nothing wrong with how you see Jack. As I wrote before, we're free to headcannon a lot of things.
On the other hand, I don't have a major problem with how Jack was portrayed in ME3, and I thought it fit her character arc just fine, because of how I see her. You, however, were disappointed with her behavior.
So whose headcannon should Bioware support? They're going to be wrong with somebody, no matter how they do it. At the end of the day, all a writer can do is approach a character with his/her own perspective and hope for the best.
Which is why I chimed into the conversation when I saw PB post his theories about Jack fans' discontent. Not all Jack romancers are unhappy with her ME3 portrayal, and I thought a different POV was needed to balance the dialogue.

I'd love to see some writing about how the conversation would go where Jack chews Shepard out for leaving her. Not just the face-punch, and the kiss. Just, expanding the scene, or continuing it in a private one, later. I usually storm up ideas about these types of things, but then falter on the execution of the execution.

I always pick Jack's team to play a support role rather than front lines. If you assign her students as front-line fighters, is there a scene during the ending where she rallies her students and tells them that she's proud of them?
Not sure if I've found some unused audio in the files here or not...

I really do hope this is there for picking the front line option. Because if this is another bunch of dialogue cut I think I might go full on rage rather than just depression.

Here's the dialogue. If it's not in the game, it's a pity.
Well, ****. This must be the dialogue that made Ms. Taylor cry. Hearing Jack pour out that much emotion at the feeling of being proud of her students...it made me tear up. Her students are the fruit of her labors. Their excellence is the result of her endeavors. Their excellence is the result of her acting outside of herself, for other people.

"The boiling red anger and hate she felt for the Illusive Man burst into a
blue biotic pulse that surrounded her tense frame like struck by
electricity. Without her knowledge, the inanimate furniture and objects
around her begun shaking and floating on their own accord.
"M-Ma'am?..."
The slight tremor in the feminine voice instantly brought her back to
reality. Jack looked up to Rodriguez's worried blue eyes and lowered her
arms to her sides in defeat; powering down her biotics.
"What is it Rodrigez?"
Her fingers were furiously punching at her omni-tool, "Someone is hacking the main door in Orion Hall!"
"Biotic Shields up! Get ready to attack!"
Hearing a dangerous edge in their teacher's voice, the students did as they were told.
Jack hurried to the open balcony that looked over the gigantic room held up
by white stone walls and pillars. Grissom's Academy was beautifully
designed, and Jack had enjoyed the elaborate architecture, greenery and
aesthetic ponds during her stay here. But none of that mattered now, her
eyes were focused on one thing and one thing only. The main door.
With a few short beeps, Red turned to green.
She saw the bulky white armor first; she didn't need to look at the
familiar gold logo, she knew it all too well. Their presence here meant
that Jack and her few students were the last line of defense left. The
others at the academy were either dead or abducted. Her thoughts went to
Kaylee."
