'S funny, I remember the previous iteration of the BioWare forums back when it was first revealed that she has a name other than Subject Zero: there was at least a handful of threads by people insisting she's either a man or trans, because she has a below average [for video games] bust, and a dude's name. Oh, and man hands in the cinematic trailer. That was an issue for some folks, too.

  Seriously?  They seriously thought that?  If she doesn't look like Miranda, and if her ass isn't shoved in your face every other shot, she must have been born a he?

If I remember correctly, right after her reveal video people were creating thread saying that:

- "SuZe is a trannie"
- "SuZe" must have aids because she has no hair
- "Suze" must have cancer because she has no hair
- "SuZe" is clearly aimed to 12-years old boys
- "SuZe" is clearly owerpowered
- "I don't want to recruit SuZe"
- "I'm going to cancel my preorder"

My reaction was:

- "wow the people here on the forums are retarted"
- "everyone hates here. I guess she's going to be my favourite character"

[EDIT] the same is happening to Vega right now, we haven't heard a single spoken line from him and everybody's already saying that he's Jacob v 0.2 (or worse)

Really?

I'll so gonna love James Vega!

On top.

About that, I'm actually quite excited for Vega. He doesn't look like the "nice-guy" soldier we've seen twice, once in Kaidan and again with Jacob. He looks more like a meathead kind of dude, which will be an interesting contrast to what we've seen up to this point. And maybe you see a little bit of a superior-officer/subordinate relationship again that you saw in ME1 with Kaidan, Ashley, even Garrus a bit... which was lost in ME2. I just hope he doesn't turn out to be over-the-top excitable soldier like Grunt was.

You think they're gonna introduce Gillian in ME3?  The only reason I'd be interested in that happening, would be because her relating to Cerberus and being a Biotic.  Which would peak my interest, if having Jack along would influence anything.

As for Vega, I don't think he'll turn out to be a "meathead" type, this seems like classic Bioware misdirection to me. Where they showcase the character in such a way, as to get people to see that character through in there own prejudiced view, and then lo and behold said character is nothing like there preconceived notion. They got me good with Jack, I had basically written her off but that sure changed in a hurry.

And to be on topic, I feel that Jack's "whatever you say, bossman" quote is very underrated. I was playing ME2 with a friend recently and after that line my friend makes an almost  "hmm" sound or whatever I can't really describe it, but it was clear that it was meant in a suprised/admiring manner. I barely pay any attention to that quote anymore since it gets overshadowed by more glamorous ones, but it really sums Jack up quite well in my opinion.

I didn't know people were that hateful when Jacks character was first revealed. In all honestly the only reason I started playing ME is because of Jack! When ME2 came out all my friends were playing it, I saw her with all her tats and her potty mouth and immediately asked who she was. once I found out you could romance her I brought ME and ME2.
I think a lot of people on the forum are hateful just to be hateful! so sad!

or the fact that Jack's portrayal in the cinematic trailer would suggest she didn't have regular access to moisturizer.

Say what?

If you watch the HD version of the cinematic trailer Blur did for 'Mass Effect 2', you get a close up of Jack's hands, and, when it was first released, some of her detractors were of the opinion that Jack's hands weren't nearly feminine enough for her to actually be a lady.

Indeed. The number of posts I've seen of people claiming they're going to kill Vega as soon as the oppertunity presents itself is boggling. It makes me wonder what kind of anger issues they have going on.

I'll admit that during the lead up to 'Mass Effect 2', I was adamant that I was going to dislike Miranda -- I was wrong -- but it would never occur to me that she shouldn't make it through the suicide mission hale and whole.

And considering just how few characters BioWare has made that I do dislike, I'm rather intrigued by Vega and looking forward to seeing what they do with him.

vega gave me that vibe like he was going to be a deconstruction of the spacemarine. honestly, its the only direction they can go with this character with his precense in the story meaning anything.

I think somebody somewhere knows what Jack's real/full name is. Until then, ill go with the assumption of Jacqueline Nought. Its elegant and it makes sense to me. who here knew what nought even meant without googling it? see? it works.
you r free to disagree though, which is fine. its not set in stone or anything.

Brits,and fans of TopGear....

OT: My reaction to jack was about the same all all my crew "That's jack?" but now shes probably my most used squadmate,I think Vega can't be judged til you've seen/heard/used him, as is the case with most squaddies, I liked jacob until the first recruitment mission and the first time I talked to him on the normandy,I was indifferent with Miranda, so yeah I think since Vega is a BW creation he at least deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Also,Jack rules.  LI for ME3:wub:

I went into ME2 (and ME1) with no idea what to expect, because I picked it up way late. So I missed all the promotional material and everything, and when I went to Purgatory to recruit "Jack", I honestly was expecting a man. My reaction to the Jack reveal was pretty much the same as the characters in my squad... "That's Jack?" lol. It was pretty sweet. That's one of the nice things about avoiding spoilers.

Part of me wishes I could tear myself away from this place until ME3 drops, but the rest of me is too much of a fan. I'm starved for new ME info and I gobble up every new bit of info.

It may be a bit of a stretch, but if Jack's been known as "Subject Zero" since Teltin, "Jack" is slang for "Zero," or "Nothing." Maybe that's where "Jack" comes from.

Ugh, if Nought were her real last name, that would be beyond coincidence and a stupid play on words in the vein of the hokey Batman villain naming scheme. E. Nigma, the Riddler, being a dude who's an enigma... a lady name Harleen Quinzel dressing like a Harlequin, etc. ... lame.

Jacqueline Nought is a pen name, clearly.

Correct my if I'm wrong, but didn't Harley Quin take the pseudomyn Harley Quinn because is was a play on words with her name?

According to LoTSB her name is Jacqueline Nought. At least that is the name she used when submitting Poetry to a magazine or something. That could just be her being clever but who knows.

maybe im being a judgey judgemental judging judgementalpants but.........................i thought Jack submitting poetry was incredibly lame on Bioware's part. Jack liking poetry, sure, fine, whatevs. but still, it DIDNT have to be BAD poetry! It wouldve been ok if it was instead, poorly articulated or riddled with spelling errors but no. Jack got reduced to a highschool stereotype.:pinched:

Yep. If she stops going by "Jack" how can we keep calling ourselves "Jackolytes"? If we get her real name in ME3 (or in DLC) I hope she still goes by "Jack" and only lets family or people she's close to use her real name, if at all.

Possibly, but she's hardly the only one... the aforementioned Edward Nigma, Julian Day (Calendar Man), Dumfrey and Deever Tweed (Tweedledee and Tweedledum), Viktor Fries (Mr. Freeze), etc.

It's also quite a coincidence that a lady whose name resembles "Harlequin" pals around with a guy named The Joker.

Jacqueline Nought as a real name for a character named Jack, who is "Subject Zero" follows a hackneyed and lame naming convention for comic book characters, while Jacqueline Nought as a pen name is clever. :P

The question is what the majority of Teltin personnel would have called her in the first place. Was it “Jack” (short for Jacqueline) like in the creepy “Miranda” scenario Goat painted? Was it “Jack” to dehumanize her by ignoring her sex? Was it always “Zero” like most of the footage in her LM seems to suggest? Did she pick “Jack,” much like Grunt did?
This has sparked another “ME3 Jack Wishlist Item” for me though: if not some explanations of some of her tattoos, can she explain her name to my Shepards in ME3?
***
As for Vega, I have been guilty of being negative towards him. Part of it was because I dislike his concept art, part was because I disliked the "improved" version even less, and part was because after 5 (potentially alive) in ME and another 11 (potentially alive) squad mates in ME2, do we really need more new ones? And a small part was just to troll Mesina2 personally. Image IPB Hearing what was said about poor Jack when previewed, I will desist about Vega. For all I know he might be ex-Seff-Efricen (and voiced by Arnold Vosloo or Sharlto Copley).
