Most likely, Joker was grounded because he pulled a Kenneth and told the Alliance and Council where to stick their ignorance when they started smearing Shepard's name and "dismissing" the Reaper threat. He probably joined Cerberus afterwards.

Weee, catching up on pages worth of Joker And adding my two cents.

I imagine Joker got grounded as the result of a non-judicial punishment for disregarding the abandon ship order, indirectly causing Shepard's death. I mean, he had to have told the Alliance how Shepard came back for him when he was debriefed. I can see him being lippy with the higher ups when they told him the cover up story, too. That certainly wouldn't help.

I always felt Joker was grounded either because of post-traumatic stress or pending an official Alliance review of the incident. They do that in the real military...you're grounded when they're investigating an accident or incident. Given the crazyness of the first Normandy's destruction, it is very conceivable the investigation could go on for a year or more.

I'll have to agree with Skye on her theory. Military standards, it makes sense. Doesn't mean I can't see Joker telling the Alliance and Council to shove their political ****storm up their butts. No, he'd lose his temper with them.

Back OT, I think the idea of Joker being grounded for the duration of the investigation is totally realistic. It only makes sense. But if Joker resigned just from a standard procedure I think he's being a little... unrealistic in his expectations. I figured he got grounded permanently and that's why he went off and joined what's considered a terrorist organization. It's a pretty extreme decision when it's laid out like that. He really, really loves flying, but I hate to think he'd join up with those people (Admiral Kahoku, anyone?) just to fly again. :/

It is very possible Joker resigned because the investigation was taking too long, and that both the Alliance and the Council were trying to dismiss everything that Shepard dug up. I think it's only inevitable that the Reapers would get brought up in such an investigation due to the mysterious nature of the ship's destruction. At that point, the Alliance brass and the Council would probably deny any such hypothesis of Reaper involvement, which would frustrate Joker even more. Joker did say that "everything you stirred up? The Council just wanted it gone." It is also possible that Joker was grounded for a more extended period of time because he had behaved less than stellar in a hearing. XD That would be our Joker, indeed...

In my fanfic, it's a combination of all three: he was grounded for the duration of the investigation, then for insubordination and psychological trauma.

In my own fic I had him grounded for the investigation as well, and then for the remainder of his military term for insubordination concerning ignoring the order to evacuate.

Oh yes, of course he wouldn't join just to fly. I had forgotten about his little speech about the records being sealed, the Alliance betraying them, and so "Hell yeah, I joined Cerberus." I just wonder about him being grounded. That would have been a nice little tidbit of info for them to chat about at the beginning of the game after getting back on the Normandy.
