ME1 feels like more to go through because of all the sidequests you have on the Citadel and because it takes longer for you to take command of the ship and fly around. Not to mention the constant swapping of armor and weapons for the same but incrementally better. Not knocking it, ME1 was awesome but after ME2 it does feel like more of a chore. My first total playthrough times were approximately the same for both games so it's not like ME2 is shorter.

Mass Effect 1 seemed like more of a chore even though it is technically just as long as Mass Effect 2 because it had fewer missions, and the missions were much, much longer. I also got lost on a lot of the maps before I learned how to use my little beacon cursor thingy. XD Then, of course, there's the infamous inventory system (my best friend is playing ME1 for the first time and it took me about an hour to explain it to him, including my favorite strategies for dealing with the ever-growing bulk of crap you carry around).
But, I digress, I was able to appreciate the story in ME2 a lot more once I played it with a ME1 import character. Then, lines like, "They told me it was impossible to get to Ilos, too." on Thane's recruitment mission actually had some weight to them. If you just heard the line without ever doing the Ilos mission, you just thought, "Oh, that's where the final mission was in the first game." But after I actually played that mission, I thought, "OMG Ilos. That was a boss level. Probably one of my favorites."
I also wouldn't say Joker was more depressing in ME1, he just didn't have as many opportunities to be funny...that, and he was probably expecting Shep to make a big deal out of his condition. But, in ME2 he trusts Shepard more, so he's come out of his shell a bit.

Anyway Joker in ME1 wasn't depressing in the sense that he brought the atmosphere down but I stopped talking to him after the second convo because everything seemed to go back to his disease and anything I said seemed to have a negative impact on him. From a meta perspective, I agree he just wasn't given much to work with (a waste given he's voiced by Seth Green to boot). I was happy when they fixed it in ME2 and always talked to him after a mission, either to hear what he thought of the squad or the bickering with EDI. They should've done more of the latter.

But Virmire was horrible, I already knew that I had lost Ash and saved Kaidan since I was FemShep. When playing ME I fell so hard for Kaidan and the more I liked Ash the more I dreaded progressing in the game because I knew at some point she would die. I had forgotten the name of the planet and I didn't want to look it up so each new mission was scary. Ended up doing it next to last or something like that, sniffling in front of the computer when I left Ash on the ground *shivers*
Meeting Joker on the Normandy for the first time in ME was like running into an old friend. You just looked through his gruff manners and it was the fun Joker that you knew and loved from ME2. And when importing that FemShep that had gone through ME into ME2, I still got so happy when he walked in to greet Shepard even when I knew that he would do so.

What? I love that drawing; it's poor Joker about to get pounced by very...enthusiastic Shepard. XDNamiraWilhelm wrote...
I see people are failing to ignore Zeel again... perhaps a reminder of how quickly he went away after we did the last time?

Hi, I'm CrutchCricket and I'm an alcoho- no wait, bad CrutchCricket! Well... so much for retroactive first impressions...<_<
Anyway I support Joker for whatever in ME3 including but not limited to LI status. I just made a female Shepard and I wouldn't mind an interesting male to hook her up with (not fond of the current selection as LIs). Otherwise I'd also want more Joker-EDI banter.

So I was bored [again], so I mades a Joker avatar (following AdmiralCheez's tutorial)!

It's the third I've made, but I figured I'd take a break from making Sheploo ones. I have yet to understand why, though..I love ME3 Sheploo. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/heart.png[/smilie] Anyway, assuming you guys like this one, I plan to make more. Maybe with a different background..

So while we wait for that debunking... what do you think Joker does after ME2 in the Shepard dies scenario?

He regretfully wonders why he never confessed his feelings to Shep...

Ohhhh so dramatic and angsty!
I'd think that Joker would steal the Normandy and fly back to the Alliance to try to convince them of the truth. I don't know. BioWare did say they had a special treat for those who had Shepard die...I'm curious as to what it is!
