Well then. I guess I'll be an old maid forever. :(

That's the thing, though--even people like Joker fall in love. It's just a bit different for them than for most. They do it awkwardly, subtly, sending mixed signals... until finally they maybe just can't keep it in anymore, or don't want to. Generally, only extreme duress will bring out their feelings...

And saved by Wynne! Yayyy!

But sexuality has no influence on the
character itself. Joker will be Joker, no matter if heterosexual or
homosexual. And we don't know so much about him, so we cannot really
know if he would only be attracted by woman or maybe by men too. But
having him only as romance option for male Shepards would be
disappointing at least for me, as I am normally playing female Shepards.
But I guess that would only leading me to play a male Shepard.

...*imagines Sheploo and Joker snogging*

Anyways, Joker (hopefully) will just be an option. If a gamer wants him to stay their buddy, then go for it. If a gamer wants Joker snoggings, then go for it.

Indeed, despite having two games with him, we don't know much about Jeff Moreau. All we know is the exterior, the personality he allows Shepard to see. I am veeerrrrrryyy much like Joker in this regard. Guarded, sarcastic, snarky, the works - minus the beard, hat, and gender, but you get my point. I don't come right out and tell someone I like them. Ever. Too much chance to get hurt. And maybe that's why I've never had a relationship, but I don't think that means I'm not worthy for one.

Because I see plenty of myself in Joker, I am rooting for his romance because he deserves it.

*lol* NOOO I don't think of Casey that way no matter how cute he is, eek! And what is with Kaidan's funky O-face, and Jacob's and Joker's creepy smiles, and Sheploo's tie-you-to-the-railroad-tracks old-timey villain face?

*lmao* Why on earth am I looking at their faces anyway? *high-five*

pizu wrote...

You have a point, I can't deny that. I understand how you feel, because
that's exactly how I felt in the first Mass Effect, where I couldn't
romance Tali'Zorah. It's very frustrating and unpleasant. I understand
that you really like Joker and I'm glad to see that there are people
like you who support their character so much. I also appreciate that you
took some time to write such a well argumentated and long post just to
answer mine and that's why I'll try to do the same.

Thank you. :)

I had similar feelings about Garrus in ME1, but then his ME2 romance came along and it was all like CALIBRATIONS, then suddenly flllllexibility, and I was all like :?. Because you don't romance crazy-looking aliens for their bodies, or even their mad calibration skillz. ;)

pizu wrote...

First of all,
I'd like to discuss your roleplaying argument, because I don't really
understand how it relates to Joker. You say that each single Shepard can
be different - your hero could be the complete opposite of mine and
whit that I cannot disagree, because it's true. That is, in fact, the
charm of the roleplaying games, but I fail to see how that relates to
Joker's personality. Mine Shepard could be a paragon and yours could be a
renegade, for example - but that doesn't influence Joker's character at
all. None of our choices in the game change his character. That alone
negates the possibility of a different Joker "per" different Shepard.

We may only have Paragon/Renegade/the occasional Neutral when it comes to conversation options... but over time, the player makes decisions which add up to more than just binary choices. It's not so much Joker's character that matters here--it's the part of Shepard which is left to the player's imagination. It may be for a large part illusory, but it's true--the player should be able to decide whether a character who can be attracted to their particular Shepard, actually is attracted based on whether they can envision that happening.

Take Samara, for instance. She can either be merely friendly with your Shepard or, if you play your cards right, extremely frustrated by unwanted feelings for your Shepard. The player has the option to choose whether or not they want to try, and if you don't try, for you there can have been nothing there in the first place, as far as you're concerned. There's not really a right or wrong in that instance--it's up to the player to decide.

It is equally up to the writers to decide, "No matter what any Shepard does, Samara is not interested." Or, alternately, "You have to prove to her that you're not going to give up on her; if you don't do that in ME3, nothing will happen. Otherwise, if you're super-dedicated, she'll eventually decide to give you a chance." But regardless, we decide whether we think this Shepard is someone who would even try, and whether we think this Shepard would appeal to them--if we don't think they work together, then we can ensure nothing ever happens in most cases. That can be partially the writers as well--being more of a Paragon appeals to Samara where the Renegade Shepards do not.

In the end, it's like a joint decision. The writers decide whether or not a given character could potentially be attracted to a certain type of Shepard, and whether/how they are interested in pursuing that; the players decide whether or not their Shepard IS that type/whether Shepard would pursue the attraction/whether they can imagine that character with their Shepard or whether there's only friendship there. Hopefully what I meant is a little more clear now. :)

pizu wrote...

My
other complain is the follow: As a female player, you obviously view
Joker in a different way that I do. For example - I don't find anything
passionate in -
"You are not doing this to me (again)!", because it
seems like a completly normal dialogue line for a man who's about to
lose his commander and friend. It's normal for him to act like that in
such a drammatic situation. I'm pretty sure that he would say the same
to any other member.

I'm not sure why that's a complaint, exactly--the fact that we can both see something different in that line is, to me, a perfect example of the ambiguity which leads to romance! Tali having a crush on Shepard is perfectly plausible, but for me the player, I have the option--and have taken it--to view her lines of that type as just being her adorably shy and awkward personality. To me, Shepard is like a sibling to her. That others can see her a different way, and have something else happen, doesn't change my view of how she views my other Shepards.

If I went back and romanced her with a ManShep later, to my other Shepards she would still not necessarily be attracted to them--because they look different, and my view of what she finds attractive colors my perception of her.

That's the beauty of it, if you ask me--the player's option to view characters however we want, on whichever playthrough we want. I chose to view Liara's stumbling embarrassment on one playthrough as simple self-consciousness in unfamiliar situations, whereas on another playthrough I decided to perceive it as sexual interest. Both attitudes led different places for two different versions of Shepard. They led to different relationships, and I enjoyed those playthroughs feeling separate and unique.

I don't think either view of the characters is wrong. I think that's just the domain of the player, really. Our perceptions are right as long as they fit within the context of what can happen in the game. Jack isn't suddenly a quarian if we imagine her that way, but if we imagine her being attracted or not attracted to a Shepard of ours, and both outcomes can happen (i.e. she can either bang or not bang Shepard), then there is no single point of view which is right--we get to choose which is right for that specific playthrough, and who's to say otherwise?

pizu wrote...

Other than this, well, I agree. I myself
wouldn't mind giving such an option for the female players, but I still
disagree with him becoming homosexual. It just wouldn't find his
image-personality.

Unless he was bi and just more comfortable admitting the straight side of his attractions--but strictly homosexual I can agree is out. There was too much relish in his, "Take pictures!" for instance. ;) I agree, straight is much more likely for him.

Regardless, though, if they wanted to make Shepard a sort of exception for Joker, then... why not? Gay male Shepards have, as of this moment, 0 options thus far. We already have confirmation that will change, but we don't know who. If Joker was an option, then when it's so little effort to add in a few lines that change, "you're totally beautiful" to "you're seriously handsome," why deny gay guys the opportunity to have a great character be romanceable for them? To me, even though I find it difficult to see Joker that way, I don't mind the idea of that not being the case for others, you know? It would make some people really happy, I think. To me, that makes it potentially worth it.

Aww, PD... I never knew this about you! And you deserve it too. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/smile.png[/smilie] I feel quite certain 99% of the people who come to this thread will agree, because we've clearly got a soft spot for your type!

Seriously, I like the snarky, wary types. Generally, it means you feel pretty deeply and you hate even the faintest trace of a lie--you'd rather snark than say something meaningful without really meaning it, and you'd rather someone you care for think you dislike them than to have your sensitive heart crushed. Aww... just typing this is making me want to hug you! Don't ever, ever think you won't find love. You just have to know when the right time comes to open your heart, with someone who makes you feel safe to do it despite yourself.

You like to write a lot, don't you? Well, eh, what can I say? You made a lot of good points and you explained yourself very well in this last post and, to be honest, all that makes it really hard for me to add anything at all. I don't know what to say. I can't argue you, because I pretty much agree with you - now more than before and I don't have any intentions of continuing this debate, since it's pretty much over.

*lol* Yup, I do like writing, and I type like a mofo, too. ;) Thank you. I enjoyed talking about this with you, and I love that you were reasonable enough to listen. Some people come in here and they really aren't interested in doing that, just in airing their own opinions. So I think we all appreciate that you are clearly a thinker, and not just a talker. Thank you for reading. Honestly.

Same here! I just hope it fits my tiny head XD I am SO going to wear it to the midnight release of ME3! Along with my N7 jacket! If anyone asks about it, I'll direct them to the thread here! Besides, who says Joker support has to end with ME3?

Man I'm wearing my SR2 hat, N7 hoodie, and renegade shirt to the midnight launch of ME3. I'm gonna be decked out. I doubt Joker support is ending with ME3. Maybe for some people, but probably not for us.

Wynne, your walls of text are simply inspiring. You win at wall of text, epic-hardcore.

Though, pizu, I do see where you're coming from. Joker seems a bit bro-ish (and thus not really prone to being gay or bi) to me, but then again, that is my perception and others might not see it that way. I support the option of making him bi nonetheless.

I'm going to be SICK of rice krispy treats and fondant by the time I'm done with this Normandy project...I better win that darn litho. XD

Oh yeah. I got two of those when I tried the ME3 multiplayer beta at Gamex. Totally awesome. Shame that most people play on PC and the multiplayer doesn't support crossplatform playability. Shame really. Co-op games should support crossplatform, like Dead Rising 2. You can't complain that it's "unfair" and that the other players has it easier since it's co-op...

I would've loved to play multiplayer with you guys :)
