Dare I say it? Fencing seems a bit delicate of a sport, no offense to anyone who practices it, but it seems kind of soft for Miranda. She strikes me as someone who isn't afraid to get hurt or hurt someone else if it means she'll learn something she can use later. If she does any kind of traditional weapons training I see her using something more practical and perhaps a bit more lethal.
I can see your point, but I think that what's appropriate about it as a pastime is that it is... very precise and elegant, while retaining an element of violence.
But it would be a pastime, like a sport. Not so much practical training.
