And it's more for sport than anything. Assuming sword fighting to be practical in a world where there have been firearms for thousands of years (Or even in the modern world today) is just absurd.
What about the omni-blade and biotic punches?
I say the presence of kinetic shields and barriers changes the combat equation quite a bit. Whittling down shields takes time, and if you can get your enemy down faster by melee (where shields don't have any effect since they only work against fast-moving projectiles) then there are bound to be situations where that's the preferred course of action.
Of course the formal styles would be for sport, but given one possible outcome of a certain fight in ME3 I'd say that fighting with "sticks of metal" has re-acquired a certain efficiency in the ME universe, even against opponents armed with guns. And the formal styles can teach you body awareness and coordination, probably better than a standard soldier training.
There's also this: if bullets can be infused with a Warp effect, melee weapons can also be. So it should be possible to fight with a melee weapon augmented by the user's biotics.
Which means...well...I would love to see a Miranda vs. Kai Leng melee fighting scene.
BTW, there's a lack of Miranda pictures lately....
