I really hate that whole conversation.
Well, I think Strahovski does an excellent job with her side of it.
Really the problem is that the game is not giving me the dialog options that I want.
I think it's supposed to make me feel all macho. Whereas, actually, I'm mystified that any writer could actually think that this is what I would want to say to Miranda at that point. I can enjoy the scene, though, as long as I basically ignore Shepard.

Shepard's answers are lackluster. Other than that, I don't think there is anything wrong with the "Promise me" conversation.
This.
Although, to be fair, the "I don't plan on dying again" comes off to me as more moral and emotional support, and reassuring. Like an "I'll always be there for you" type deal.
I absolutely despise Shepard saying the "No promises" line though. The only reason I would do it is or the hug.

I hate the conversation because Shepard can't get off his damn high horse for five minutes and admit he worries about her.
Well, that's partly what I mean when I say: "The game is not giving me the dialog options that I want."

Replace scene with romance, and you have me.

Ok... why are we hating that conversation now...?
One of Meer's worst performances IMO. The emotions are way imbalanced. Miranda is really distraught while Shepard is kind of chillax about it all. If you ignore the context it felt more like a coach giving a player a pep-talk than a romance dialogue with how the emotions were balanced in that dialogue.

"I already died once, don't plan on doing it again" which sounds appropriately badass but not all too realistic. and
"It doesn't work like that" - more realistic. I also like how this line is delivered. I always pick up a hint of tenderness, not usually present in his day to day dealings.

I feel it's more "Shepard isn't saying the dialogue choices I want". If that makes sense.
One reason why paraphrasing the actual words spoken was a stupid idea.
edit: Like, the paraphrase is "No promises", but the way he delivers it is just... Off. Like, if it were me physically, I would have worded the phrase differently.

Also this. Possibly the VA directors fault? But basically Strahovski is emoting the hell out of it, but there's no balance at all. I just have to ignore one half of the conversation, pretty much.

"It doesn't work that way. We could all be dead this time tomorrow. So if it is not worth it..."
Shepard is realistic, brutally even, but he is giving her the chance to end it all now if she wants to. I think it puts them on the same level.

The good news is that ME3 Shepard actually acts like a loving boyfriend, so the ME2 romance is merely the unappealing appetizer on the way to the entree. Maybe her being off-squad was for the best.
Ideally the "Damn it you're right" save I made will let me skip convo4 and the engine room(most cringe worthy parts imo) and reboot the romance in Mass Effect 3. Although I do like the asking her to wait till after the mission bit at the elevator/engine room. However I doubt my Shepard would have the willpower especially with the impending suicide mission happening in a few hours, so I kind of have to not roleplay my Shepard to get that dialogue.

I agree with you . There are some touching things about the ME2 romance but all of them are said by Miranda, not Shepard ( I wanna slap him sometimes lol ) .
I'm definitely looking forward to actually see him worrying about her in ME3 . He may even cry in some cases ... at least I hope so.
I don't know why they didn't want to show us a vulnerable Shepard before ME3 ... he is not a Hollywood action-movie hero damn it !

The "No promises" part is nice, and I think Miranda would appreciate its honesty more. I also like "Who said anything about love..." It takes the heaviness out of this conversation, and it's clearly not meant to be taken at face value. It's Miranda's lines here I'm not so excited about.jtav wrote...

If ME3 is an improvement, maybe that means BW is learning how to work that system better.

I disagree. I think Shepard was very sincere and caring when he delivered the "You give your father too much credit" line.

The conversation wheel and speaking protagonist made it harder to conduct half the conversation (i.e. your part) in your head. It is easier in say BG or DA:O...I don't recall people complaining so much about protagonist lines in that because they were not explicitly said.

At the very least, they need to make the paraphrases closer to what Shepard physically says.

Well, not sure how the thought-process actually went, but my impression is that Shepard's impassivity is mostly a leftover piece of design from games like DA:O, where the protagonist is not voiced.
Basically, it feels like the thinking was: the player character should not be too emotive, in order to allow the player to emote/roleplay, etc. But I don't think it really works that way because, once the protagonist is voiced, s/he becomes a bigger part of the scene than in the other model.
Anyway, seems like they are moving beyond this and letting Shepard be more emotional.

Yes, definitively. "I can't admire your body or your mind?" is, IMO, the best line in the entirety of the romance.
Also, it leads to another nice line in the next conversation "I care about you, Miranda, and I think you care about me."
It is a pity they were not able to follow up nicely.

Shepard: "Come on, Miranda. You want this...."
Miri: Yeah, I do...so don't die. You promise me dammit." (One of my favorite Miri Quotes)
Shepard (If you choose "I Promise"): I died once already. I don't plan to do it again." This makes the conversation a little shorter.
Miri: "Give me some time. When I'm ready, I'll come by, ok?"
Shepard (If you choose "No Promises"): I doesn't work that way. We could all be dead this time tomorrow...so if it's not worth it...."
Miri: *Stands up and hugs Shepard* "No, it is. Give me some time. When I'm ready, I'll come by, ok?
As much as Iike the hug, I still don't fully understand the significance of say " No Promises."
And what does Miri fully mean when she says "No, it is?"
Anyone want to enlighten me?

I was exaggereting . There a few caring/loving lines said by Shepard, but I think you get my general idea
