If I imagine a prior relationship, I can make sense of a romance, but otherwise Miranda inevitably turns into his "mother" in my head.

Is Shepard Oedipus then ? The one who killed his father TIM (in ME3 of course) and slept with his mother Miranda ?

To me it is different ; indeed, it could be way for her to deal with her infertility . However, she doesn't give life to a being "ex-nihilo" so to speak . She brings him/her back to life, it is different.

I can accept a doctor-patient relationship between them at the start of ME2. But that in no way compells me to accept a creator-creation parallel or any such thing. Any romance between them might've breached some medical ethics if treatment had been ongoing. As it stands that doesn't exist, nor would it bother me if it did.

It is rare that I agree completely with you, but here it is.

I don't get the 'Miranda being a mother to Shep' angle at all. She would be a little too detached for that during the Lazarus project.

And while I'm at it, I see absolutely no reason to connect her achievement to the Lazarus Project with her infertility. Any such association is completely accidental. She was selected to lead the project by TIM because she had the skills to do it. She succeeded at it not because she was especially driven by her infertility, but because she's just that good. Also Lazarus started two years ago, and we can infer from the details that the events in the dossier happened later than that.

For once, jtav, I think you're completely off with this, and with that creator/creation connection as well. There is nothing creepy with the romance. Miranda and Shepard are two people who are at the pinnacle of human achievement for different reasons, and who are attracted to each other. Apart from Miranda's personality traits, that's what the game gives us. You can add your own theories of course, but the game in no way suggests them.

@Joseph:
It is even rarer that I completely agree with you, but here it is

Not everyone. No Aria, No EDI, and that's from the "star" list alone. But it is annoying. Let's hope she's gotten a really good redesign.

Hmph...Diana Allers. How many Miranda replacements does ME3 need? Not that I'm not looking forward to new characters, but why the hell didn't they make Emily Wong our embedded journalist?

I wasn't arguing that. What I'm arguing is having a kid with even a subconscious hope that they could be a remedy to your pain or that you could do better to her that what was done to you is a recipe for disaster.

I might agree with the first part, but certainly not the second. Anyone who has had a difficult upbringing, or struggled with abuse of whatever kind, etc., is going to want to do better for their children than what was done to them. This is perfectly natural and healthy. Doesn't mean everything will be perfect, but then, it never is.

Having children in the hope that they will be a remedy to your own pain is obviously a much more risky endeavor. It must be said, though, that a lot of parents probably do have children to a fill a void, of whatever kind, in their own lives. Doesn't necessarily mean it always has disastrous results. Parents can learn (must learn) as they go, and balancing their own needs with those of their children is a big part of that.

Anyway, in Miranda's case, moving beyond her own "pain," self-doubt, etc. would likely be a prerequisite to having her own family. This would involve confronting her father, basically.

Ok... now it's officially getting weird... She is glaringly absent from the "star" video, and she is absent again from any screenshots! They even revealed another female character, before her... I really have no idea what they're thinking or doing.

At the very least we got official confirmation of Yvonne.

However it is now looking to me increasingly possible that she will just have an extended cameo...

:pinched: Why is there STILL no sign of Miri?  What the hell is BioWare's Problem? Have they not yet started Rndering her in Scenes and Gameplay? If they are starting now, she would end up becoming rushed and without effort in ME3. ONCE AGAIN: WHAT THE HELL IS BIOWARE'S PROBLEM? Why can't they show us a PICTURE (AT LEAST) already?:pinched:<_<

Hey! I said bust open the booze of celebration! We can get back to being depressed about Miranda's role later (and I have no doubt we will). For now let's rejoice that she'll at least look and sound like Miranda's supposed to.

Well, the game must be about to go gold, so I'm pretty sure it's all there to show, if they felt like showing it. Which they don't, for the time being, for whatever reason.

I'm torn on a triviality.

Who do you bring to Horizon? Other than Miranda, I mean. I really like hearing Miranda's "No one could have done more, Shepard" line. It gives me a warm tingly feeling. However, I also like bringing Garrus to Horizon, and his "More than most, Shepard" (which isn't near as good) supersedes Miranda's line. I can't decide if I want to leave Garrus behind so I can hear Miranda's reassurance or bring him so I can hear Ashley's "Garrus, too?" remark.
