Male Shepard is way too bland to be an interesting counterpart to Miranda. Femshep only has the benefit of having a better actor, but Shepard is pretty stale as a character. Not interesting enough for either Miranda or Jack, I just think Miranda is the more independent of the two and more likely to walk away from him.
He's a PC, one that has a few generic presets but that you're supposed to endow with personality beyond that. If you don't do that, that's your issue. Not really up to debating this and it'd be a derailment anyway since it would techincally focus on Shepard.
Whatever back story you tie to the character doesn't really matter in the end when the performance falls flat on its face. That has been the case of ME1 and 2.

She can't dump Shepard. And if you don't think he's good enough--and I agree if we're talking ME2--don't romance her. Fortunately, ME3 Shep is a pretty great boyfriend.
We'll see how much the dialogue has improved in ME3, but thus far Shepard works best as a canvas rather than a character. Too bad they didn't give the characters a bit more autonomy to make it appear that Shepard didn't have as much influence over the characters as he does. Perhaps I'll make that Shepard cheat and that might spark some interesting dialogue that might make it seem like she's deciding to leave him. Unless his performance is that impressive in ME3, then I'll probably keep them together.
