In regards to the "I love you" thing:

Just make it an option for the people that do want to hear it.

Top of page (Page 1337, of all things)

So, I'm writing a story. Miranda died on the SM, but Cerberus does another Lazarus Project. Which of these horrible fates do you prefer?

1. Miranda injected with indoctrination nanites. Because of her implants, her resistance can be measured in weeks or months instead of days.
2. Miranda breaks out before this happens. However, doing Lazarus in six months has a price. The implants are slowly killing her, even as they give her power.

In all cases, she has tremendous power (innate biotics, enhanced physical ability) and approximately two months before she succumbs.

Would the nanites imply she eventually has to fight Shepard?

If that's the case, then, I vote nanites.

If not, then I vote option 2.

I don't see much difference between a "good" Miranda and an "evil" one. I do however notice that she feels, and is written, with an invulnerability. I think it would more interesting to see her explore her mortality rather than her slowly turning evil, since Miranda is already perceived to be already.

Of course, I'd prefer he not actually say those 3 words. It's ungodly bland.

He should do it in a musical number with Garrus and Joker. /joke

Seriously though, The line that people have already posted is nice, but I think it can still be improved.

Since she died on the SM, I'm guessing she wasn't romanced or loyal to Shep. In that case, I'd go with 1. If she was still romanced, go with 2. I'm not sure Shep could handle killing Miranda if he romanced her.

Because it's used so often, it loses meaning. I want to hear it, but I understand why others don't.

I don't think anyone  does.

But Shepard saying "I love you" is just cliche. He can spice it up without making it cheesy. Actually, I wouldn't mind if it was cheesy, as long as it doesn't turn retarded.

For the record, I'd be fine if he said "I love you", as long as he says other words along with it :P

Blurting out "I love you" with no buildup or payoff would be weird, iw what I'm saying.

Because it's been abused and no longer holds an impact like it should. I also don't see it between her and Shepard.

Shep's romancing Oriana. Miranda has Liara. I'm going for pathos and plausibility here. Especially since I haven't decided whether she lives or dies. I'm worried because my concept of indoctrination is skewed. More Deal With the Devil than anything.

That would be terrible, not cheesy. Considering the context of her death in ME3 (Which is what I assume you mean), that would be the last thing I say.

Again, if he said it, along with saying something else along with it, it would be fine. Just "I love you" with no buildup or payoff isn't good.

Well, she'll die regardless. But I'll go for option 1, just to make her character more tragic. Something controling her and she has no way to avoid that. She could have escaped from her father, but she'll never be free from the nanites.

I'll go for option number one.

As for the whole "I love you" thing. Miranda doesn't strike me as the sort of person who to quote Kasumi "goes all rainbows and unicorns when she talks about you." She knows that Shepard cares about her and he knows that the feeling's mutual. When she does say it in ME3, there's a pretty compelling reason for it. Granted, if Shepard said it at any other point in the game I picture this happening:

Shepard: I love you.

Miranda: I know.

I believe that they can avoid the L word saying something like "You don't know how important you are to me."

As I've pointed out a couple times, I'm better at writing comedic dialogue, so I'll have to linger on coming up with something.

An example could be Maria's death in Gears of War 2. Of course, the context is wildly out of place, but the tone and words Dom says are spot on.
