This is actually what I think is the worst part about ME3: They established a completely new plot from scratch with their Synthetics-vs-Organics crap.

Well, I think that's largely true. Of course, there are traces of the organics vs. synthetics theme previously, notably in the Geth/Quarian plot. There are also some hints elsewhere, A.I. going haywire, for example.

Anyway, Miranda's presence should really only have enriched that subplot, especially since she and EDI complement one another in that regard.

Of course, the "robot who wants to be human" idea is the warm and fuzzy version, the easy one to handle. The idea Miranda represents is by far the more challenging one (which is why you see it done less, of course).

I always imagined that to be the sub-plot kinda thing...
"synthetic life is also life" would be listed in Cerberus' "ends justify means", Krogans' "big picture or little picture" and others.

That this would be tied to the Reapers' reasoning to harvest civilizations just came out of nowhere.

Agreed. When I first saw the endings in the leaked script, that was absolutely my reaction. The theme is present, but it was never the central theme. So, it feels out of place.

One odd thing about the endings, that tends to get lost in the shuffle a bit, is that they are lifted from Deus Ex. Which makes the whole thing doubly odd, really.

The "artisitic integrity" bit is especially funny when you compare it with this, keeping in mind that, in Deus Ex...

-Bob Page is a trillion businessman and ex-Illuminati member
-Helios is a powerful A.I.
-Tong and Everett are faction leaders
-JC is the hero.

At the end of the game, JC travels to Area 51 to confront Page. When JC locates him, Page reveals that he seeks to merge with Helios and gain full control over all nanotechnology. JC is contacted by Tong, Everett, and the Helios AI simultaneously. All three factions ask for his help in defeating Page, while furthering their own objectives, and JC is forced to choose between them. Tong seeks to plunge the world into a second Dark Age by destroying the global communications hub and preventing anyone from taking control of the world. Everett offers Denton the chance to bring the Illuminati back to power by killing Bob Page and using the technology of Area 51 to rule the world with an invisible hand. Helios wishes to merge with Denton and rule the world as a benevolent dictator with infinite knowledge and reason. The player's decision determines the course of the future, and brings the game to a close.

Page=TIM. And you have Destroy, Control, Merge. So... that's pretty funny. Not that the choices are exactly the same, but you can see the template.

Hey guys, I was wondering. Say if you got to hand pick...say 7 squadmates for Mass Effect 3 out of all of the squadmates from ME1-3, who would you pick on your team?

Mine would be Miranda (of course), Wrex, Grunt, Garrus, Javik, Legion, and I guess Zaeed (I never actually had him as a squaddie, but he's always looked pretty cool on Youtube).

1. Miranda
2. Ashley
3. Wrex
4. Grunt
5. Garrus
6. EDI
7. Jack

EDIT: Somehow I managed to forget about EDI and Jack.

@ Flemm

The thing is that with the story Deus Ex is telling the "press button, receive ending" mechanic fits the story that the game is trying to tell. It's less about Denton versus an antagonist and more about him finding the truth behind this great conspiracy while being made to decide what he'll do with that knowledge.

ME on the other hand is focused upon rallying the galaxy against the Reapers. It's less about organics vs. synthetics (Geth/Quarian conflict touches on it though) and more about all of these disparate civilizations banding together for a common cause despite centuries-old disagreements and conflicts. ME2 to a lesser extent demonstrates this by giving us a team from all different species, backgrounds, and ideologies who come together and do the impossible.

Suddenly taking one theme and saying "this is what it's all about" and disregarding everything else that's a core part of the overarching narrative is a disservice to all of the work previously done. Brushing off criticism citing "artistic integrity" isn't a valid answer. Yes you put forth your vision and it's understandable that you stand by your work but responding with "well I don't see what's wrong, you just don't get it" isn't the way to deal with it. The only way to improve as a writer is to take critisism and review and seek to improve in the next work to simply bush it off invites stagnation.

Agreed. On some level, Mass Effect is mostly about a hero recruiting allies to overcome impossible odds/an incredibly powerful foe. The battle against Sovereign, and then the Suicide Mission reflect this. As you say, you'd expect the ME3 ending to also reflect this. It should.

I do think there's a bit of an issue in that, ideally, you would want there to be something else going on thematically, rather than simply a rousing heroic tale.

To use the LotR reference, because it really does illustrate how this type of thing is supposed to work, you have the big rousing adventure, where Gandalf and Aragorn rally everyone to the cause. But you also have the tale of the Ringbearer, and that's where you get most of the development of the main theme, which is the corrupting influence of power (the tale of heroic resistance also reflects this, in various ways).

So, ideally, you would want that extra thematic layer, in addition to the main heroic tale. But... you can't really graft it on artificially. It seems like they were scrambling around, trying to make some sort of artistic statement, when they should have just gone for the rousing finale.

Miranda, Ashley or Kaidan, Legion, Javik, EDI, Jack and...hmm, Garrus (didn't like him in 1 and 2, grew on me in 3).
