How hard and likely do you guys/gals think it would be to implement a mechanic to make sure your LI is a guaranteed squad member? I know it would seem forced for some characters (Thane, Jack) but not for Miranda. Do you think they can pull it off and find a way for less plot integral LI's to fit into the larger scheme of things?
Easy in itself. Basically, if you can have a character on the team in one place, you can add him or her to all other places with very little effort.
The problem is squad banter and on-mission interaction and comments. There may be missions where it makes no sense that the character stays silent, so you'd need to add a comment - and have it voiced. If the character is normally desgned for just one mission, you might get squad banter inappropriate for the situation. Remember Overlord? Silent team members? That's what you can get for almost no effort, but who would be content with that?
Once everything's written and voiced - and ME3 appears to approach that point - all you can do is add silent presence with the occasional generic comment. Even rare situational comments like Garrus' about the krogan hospital have to be planned in advance.
A silent Miranda, as we've seen in Overlord, isn't much of a presence. Not significantly better than if she's not on a mission at all. One or two short comments can go a long way to establish presence, but none.....doesn't work.
