People always rip on Ashley for being "racist" (she isn't), but at the same time ignore Kaidan's "racism" (Hell, if you're FemShep, you can even egg him into being more "racist").
I prefer Kaidan because he seems like a more grounded and reasonable person overall, plus his biotics make him tactically more useful. I look at Ashley and see the next Sarah Palin, and her skills as a soldier, while exceptional, aren't really a standout. It's a no-brainer who dies on Virmire. In my fanfic, I even touch on Ashley's feelings for Shepard, which aren't returned. He finds her attractive and he admires her no-bs attitude but by the beginning of ME1, Shepard is already starting to question the alliance and he finds her views rather ignorant, misguided, and naive. I actually have in my fic Shepard toying with the idea of leaving the alliance after ME1 to join Cerberus. There's also a little arc that dithers around TIM trying to decide whether to kill him or recruit him. but the Collector attack makes it moot until Shepard's body is recovered.
