I have just the opposite problem in fanfic. I have trouble finding well-characterized Shepards. They aren't interesting or fun to read about. The author always seems too hung up on making then badass instead of an interesting character. I want to read stories, not wish-fulfillment.

Define ‘interesting’. My Shepard isn’t particularly interesting right now, being unconscious…but other than that, perhaps a direction of interest might be useful. Do you want angst/grimdark/what? Are you restricting to MShep, or Shepard/Miranda?

And try “The Beautiful Indifferent”.

Shep/Miranda of either gender. And interesting is a bit like obscene: I know it when I see it. I want a hook, something distinctive. A Shepard with strengths, weaknesses, amd hobbies beyond geth killing. Engaging narrative voice and sharp writing is also good.

Cerberus was an abomination. That's why almost everyone you ran into falt out hated the idea of Shepard being a part of it. I'm not advocating the whole "Paragon of the Alliance", but Cerberus was disgusting. Right now, I find Lance's fanfic is the best I've read.

I find it pretty hard to write Shepard as his own character. I usually have to take a character I know (my interpretation of Shepard is based off of Bucky Barnes from the Captain America comics) and then work off of that. Hawke on the other hand is a lot easier for me to write because he has a pretty deep backstory that can be adapted to a chosen personality.

On another note, remember when we were talking about Miranda stealing Shepard's N7 jacket?

^ Shepard: Joker, have you seen my Jacket? It was on my bed not too long ago. Where's Miranda?

I think she would've needed to lose the jumpsuit and go for something more casual if you were to follow the whole "what if Miranda stole Shepards jacket" idea.

I can see Miri wearing the Jacket after having sex. That always happens, right? I'm not too sure.

Shepard: *Grins* You didn't ask to wear my Jacket.

Miranda: I don't have to ask.

Miranda's Cerberus wasn't disgusting. The vision she presented--that the original manifesto presented--is something I can sign on for. It had it's atrocities, but there was nobility there. It's only in ME3 that they become space N*zis, complete with concentration camps. Which was why Miranda reflecting on Cerberus is so vital. She needs to acknowledge her part in this. Her obsession with Ori actually makes her less sympathetic.

And now I have the image of Miranda becoming TIW much how Harper became TIM. Only her Cerberus is dedicated to fighting Control!Shep and the Reapers.

Hence the reason that the "Control" option is not even under consideration. All of my Sheps (with the exception of my Ashleymancer & Sole Survivor FShep if I ever bring her through ME2) I RP as being close with Miranda. I don't want them at odds. The only way "Control" could be even remotely palatable would be if I did it with Thomas and just headcanoned that he sent a "replacement" of himself to be with her until Miranda's job with the recovery effort was done, at which point he would "bring her home" to Shep.

I agree, although I like how the jacket breaks up the white of the jumpsuit. I might have to go back and design a black and gold Cerberus version of the jacket.

This partially why I'm starting to like Control. The idea of having Miranda and her own organization opposing the Reapers sounds interesting plus I'd like to see Miranda's reaction to what Shepard has become.

I like Control only as a prequel to Catalyst!Shepard being neutered or destroyed. And Miranda is just the woman to do it. Loving the man he used to be just makes it more dramatic.

It depends on the girl.

Miranda would do it to tease Shepard. I wear the hoodie though, she might take that to cover up, as it's more suited for covering her up.

Unless she isn't planning on covering up.

While we're on the subject, based on my own experiences and her personality, she certainly is not the kind of girl to cover up... only maybe as a tease.  I have a feeling she would enjoy driving Shep a bit crazy.

She does tease him. I would imagine she'd do it with nudity as well.

We actually had someone provide a GREAT reason as to why she wanted to have sex in the engine room last night though.

I agree that it's vital. Of course, the rank and file are indoctrinated in ME3. Which they weren't previously. That's not really dealt with much either. On the whole, it's not very coherent. This part of the story really should have been handled better.

That's what works for you. I've read your stories and they're very fantastically written, but I'm not big on the whole artist before the war/ child prodigy thing. My Shepard is exactly what his profile says he is: A soldier, a warrior. He's a master of only one art and that is the art of war; more appropriately, he's what Javik says he is, a boulder carved by war and violence, and he is a prisoner to its design. He's also very well learned in the galaxy and spends free time reading about ancient Asari civilizations and Turian-Hanar politics as he does physical training and other things. And he is more of an intricate character, in a lot of ways mirroring The Illusive Man. He fights for the bigger picture, has his own sense of honor and duty, and compassion for all things in the universe, yet he simultaneously is ruthless, jaded, and in some circumstances willing to kill innocents for the sake of the mission. He'll do his best to avoid it, but at the end of the day, if he's facing down someone who has a hostage, he'll shoot the hostage to get a clear shot on the perpetrator. I like to think I'm a sharp writer, and as for narrative, it's pretty simplistic there. I like to get my points across straight away.

In my opinion, Cerberus are the tragic villains who tried to do the right thing and failed. In my fic, TIM redeems himself by sacrificing himself to save Shepard and Anderson (who dies a few minutes later anyway). They got too close to the Reapers, and of course, they were indoctrinated. And my Shepard respects them, because, besides all the misdeeds they did, they were the only ones to stand behind him and say, "we'll face this threat with you Shepard." They might not have had the best of motives, but the overall idea behind Cerberus was a noble one, and them trying (and even succeeding to an extent) to stop the Reapers puts them into a sympathetic light in Shepard's eyes.

Shepard: Miranda, why are you wearing my Jacket?

Miranda: What? This thing? Hmmm....*Smirks* I think it looks better on me, Shepard. I think I'll wear it for awhile.

Shepard: But...uh...ok. At least I still have my Hoody....

Miranda: *Walks Away*

I always thought her outfit would look more professional if she had something akin to a lab coat, though that might have made her outfit look too similar to Liara's I suppose.

I don't think Shepard has a choice in the matter. It's her jacket now.
