Showtime and HBO hire quality actors to make quality programs. But past that most of the stars are not marketable. That's one of the reason I watch them and only them.
Michael C. Hall will never work the way he wants once Dexter ends. His career will be streamlined into things that aren't worthy of his talent. He's great in Dexter, but he won't be wanted by people after this.
Plenty of people who are made famous for one role go on to have successful careers. Ed O'Neill was on Married with Children for, what, eleven years? He's had a number of minor recurring roles and now pays the bills with Modern Family. David Boreanaz played Angel across two series spanning almost eight years, which is about how long he's been on Bones. Kelsey Grammer was Frasier Crane for twenty years, and while he seems to be stepping behind the camera more often than not these days, I'd still say he's still got a fulfilling career.
It's not a foregone conclusion that someone who makes it big with a single role can't go on to do other great things.
Think about were those roles originated.
Understand that those people are very lucky. Ever wonder why you see some people for a short time and then they drop off the face of the Earth?
That's what Hollywood IS. It's that way for a reason. You either make money or you don't.
