"I'll always want you in my life." Miranda Lawson in Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect 1 feels too RPG like. It was absolutely amazing for me on my first run because I was learning about the amazing new galaxy to explore. Second time through, I came to realize that ME1 is EXPOSITION: THE VIDEO GAME. There isn't much replay value once you know the game by heart.
Mass Effect 2, however, never gets old. The writing was great, the combat was fun and never clunky or boring, conversations flowed nicely and never too drastically took away player control from what I can tell. There were also pleanty of call backs and references to Mass Effect 1 for nearly everything, like Helena Blake and Fist appearing in Omega. Now, as I work on my Canon Shepard again, I keep Fist alive to see him appear in ME2. It nailed everything flawlessly. My only major complaint is maybe that the side missions weren't as interesting as Mass Effect 1's (Hostile Takeover, Asari Diplomacy, ete) and that the subtitles were really dificult to read as they were so small and blended it in the light backgrounds.
Mass Effect 3 was perfectly set up. I cannot fathom how they screwed this up so badly. Tuchanka, Rannoch, and (with the exception of a lot of combat being tied to the 'A' key) Combative Gameplay was perfect but the writing just went off the Slippery Slope.

My issue with autodialogue is that it's one size fits all. DA2 had autodialouge but the personality system that based Hawke's lines off of the player's decisions took care of the OOC problem.

Take by example Thane's RM. We could throw a guy from the window or spare him. IT isn't a big decision, but we have random options like that. ME3 doesn'tn have anything like those things.

I can't see myself playing a game in 480i unless I have to now. The PS3 runs up to 720p while the 360 upconverts from that to a faux 1080p.
Needless to say you can see everything they want you too when you're running hig def stuff.
And for a film guy like me, the film grain option, that made the game look like it was shot on 35mm film, was REALLY apparent on High Definition TV's. I LOVED that.
Mass Effect has also had great sound design. If you get a pair of 5.1 or 7.1 Headphones, you can hear every little drum beat and even the breathing in the scene in the engine room.
The game almost demands that you play it at optimal settings.

Another example would be the Batarian Thugs that confront you just inside Afterlife. They don't do anything but make Omega more alive and interesting.

That's a good summation, and something I've been trying to touch on in my story (though not exactly the same).flemm wrote...
She is naturally a *big picture* character, she is very focused on the "galaxy": the Reapers, the collectors, her work, goals, ideals. She needs the *nephew* to bring balance and a personal connection. And that is what the loyalty mission basically does. But the idea was never to lose the connection with the "galaxy." The whole point is to establish that connection.
I also had an enthusiastic rant about The Wire in another thread yesterday, and I think one of my favourite characters from that shares some similarities with Miranda.
All the outside stuff is different - he's male, alcoholic, a cop, separated with kids - but at the core, a lot of his troubles come from acting like he's the smartest person in the room, and being too focused on his work at the cost of everything else. And I was actually going to appropriate a line said about him "You're no good for people".
I couldn't see Miranda asking, "The f#%k did I do?" though.

Or they go ballistic and kill pimps like De Niro does in Taxi Driver.
I'm glad our favorite lady took the former route.

Well, being able to see things is great if you're on a good PC or have a good TV.

You may laugh at me for this, but I didn't start playing HD until a few months ago. It was a massively noticeable difference, obviously. Can't believe I played on SD TV's for so long.
I've been meaning to get a HDMI cable. I still have the component HD AV cables.

DAAAAAAAAAAAWG.
Get that **** upgraded. HDMI will let you play at optimal capacity AND it looks great.
The shift from 480i/480p to 720p or 1080p is insane.
Everything looks so much better. Colors are warmer and look natural and everything. And if you have a big TV it is AMAZING.

From a gameplay perspective ME3 has the best combat of the series. There's plenty of guns, powers, and mooks to punt into low orbit.
Well, I think also, that in ME3 in particular, you can see that there are fractures on the dev side and not everything is going in the same direction. Possibly that is designers with different goals and interests, possibly that is Bioware and EA wanting different things, or trying too hard to satisfy everybody at once, or some combination of all those things.
For example, like you say, there are things about the combat system that are trying to respond to RPG fans who want more customization and "spec" options, while also trying to make the game a better shooter. Overall I think this part of the game is basically a success, or at least not a failure, but I also think ME2 was more intuitive. Also, I'm not sure that anyone who wants a shooter will be that excited about this game.
They want to appeal to new players, so sometimes you can tell that dialogue is written with that in mind. And maybe the whole story is outlined with that in mind, to its detriment. But then a non-import game is massively less satisfying that an import, which is exactly the opposite direction. An ME2 non-import is much closer to an import than in ME3 in terms of the quality of the experience.

So I've heard. I'll be going into town tomorrow (live about 20 miles outside San Antonio, Texas) and I'll pick one up. I assume the official Xbox 360 HDMI cable is the way to go? I have a 1080p display as well.

Models benefit as well. I can't tell you how much better characters in ME2 look in higher resolutions. Miranda for example, has more tone to her skin and you can even pick up skin texture.

I had a friend tell me that there's not a major difference in graphics, but that text looks a lot better. He was saying it's like pen on paper.

The issue is is that if you DON'T buy the correct model, you'll damage your TV because it can't handle things. You can get burnt on images and everything.
Can you imagine trying to explain why Miranda's butt is permanently burned onto your TV?

If you (will) have a device that supports HDMI 1.4 features, then getting a cat2 cable is a good idea, otherwise cat1 is fine.
Edit: let me stress that it’s absolutely worth it to get a HDMI cable to get the 720p/1080i resolution. It is emphatically not worth it to buy the most expensive cable you can get your hands on.

Tell that to the television that has James Woods naked ass from Videodrome on it.

Well, it depends what you mean, I guess. A lot of different characters have issues with some sort of alienation.
I think that's basically because everyone struggles with that in their lives. It is a fundamental part of human experience. So, a lot of characters reflect that struggle.
We are all *that* character at some point.
But the characters aren't the same anymore than we, as individuals, are all the same. The similarities and the differences are important. Universal and specific aspects.
In Miranda's case, she's always been aware of her limitations. That's apparent from the moment you first talk to her on the Normandy. She knows she has a lot of impressive abilities. But when Shepard says, "So, you're perfect?," she immediately says "No, I'm not. I make mistakes, etc."
So, with Miranda, the issue isn't so much that she overvalues her abilities, I don't think. It's more that she sees them as "automatic." Not something she can really take credit for.

I did kinda simplify it. It's not so much about overvaluing abilities, it's being obnoxious about it. And don't forget that it takes someone like Shepard for her to admit that.flemm wrote...

I paused at a bad time yes. Nothing in Videodrome is even remotely worth looking at in that context.
Don't leave for extended periods of time. I even got a big black mark on the top right part of the screen.
Point is is that I understand fully the consequences of a burned in image.
I would have preferred Deborah Harry A.K.A Blondie.
But nooooooo, I got James Woods.

Well, she admits it right away when you talk to her in private. So, one might say that there is a facade of over-confidence, I guess, that covers up the insecurities. She doesn't really know Shepard well yet, at that point.

What cabels would you recomend? I've been considering doing a video walkthrough for the Mass Effect series eventually and receiving and capturing high quality are certainly top priorities. Espicially if I intend to get screen caps from the footage. (For Miri/Shepard feels)
By the way, any recomendations on how to record the playthrough and ete?
To keep this all related to Miranda, If you had to pair her with someone/ANYONE from the series, who would it be?
I could see Thane potentially.
