The player is empowered with the ability to make Shepard pass off as reasonably intelligent, even smart at times (in ME2 for the most of it). Depending on how you play, your Shepard can range from anywhere between Gump levels of stupid to reasonably intelligent.

But then ME3, with its largely automated dialogue, all but forces Shepard into acting with 2 primary modes: "Idiot" and "thoughtless dick".

Such as...?

I mean, the autodialogue does take away a lot of choice, but I don't think your descriptions are fair...

I even found unrealeaed Bowie demos today. Boy howdy.

The issue with ME3 is that the dialouge simply flows into a near bipolar choice.

Choice, even the illusion of it creates replayability in games.

I counted one, ONE, neutral option.

Guess who it was with...

Well, you don't have a ton of neutral options in war.  I actually agree with (you mirimancer's god) weeks on this one.  In open war with the reapers, you don't get a ton of middle ground...

Example of "Idiot": "We fight or we die"; "This isn't about strategy or tactics"

Example of "Thoughtless dick": Complete silence and lack of vocalization when Miranda states that she needs to find Oriana (he literally says nothing to her), as well as his silence when Miranda leaves Sanctuary with Oriana (again, he is totally, completely silent).

Someone to claim us? Someone to follow? Someone to shame us? Some brave Apollo?

There is always another way.

I had a choice between being a teddy bear and what amounted to a pyshcopath at times.

Where did the ME2 Troll Renegade go?

Most of the dialogue in the introduction (Earth) sucked; I won't dispute you there.  My Shepard would never have said "The Citadel?  The fight's here!"

That said, the dialogue quickly ramped up in quality once we got to Mars.

I wont speak to the silence in the Miranda stuff, but as for those lines:
We fight or we die is a call to action.  He's spent three years trying to get people to listen, and now the reapers are upon them and there's nothing left to do but take up arms.  They're looking for an easy answer, and he doesn't have time for one.  The reapers have already reached Mars or the Moon (I cannot remember), they're basically there.  All he has time to do is muster the alliance forcers to finally take up arms.  I mean, that room gets blows up, did you really want him to go into a 30 minute dissertation on how they should deploy their forces?  Later on, with different groups, when he does actually have time, he does discuss strategy.  It's just that at that moment, strategy wasn't the point.  Getting them to fight was.  Personally, I find the potential line about wanting to stay on earth much dumber...

Also, in the end it wasn't about strategy or tactics, it was about building a crucible, getting it to earth, and shooting a tube.  He's a prophet yo!Posted Image

Yup, as in no possible way to say "Hey Miri, do you and Ori want to come on the Normandy? We can spend time together and there's a state of the art med bay on the ship, as you know."

How frickin hard is it for him to say that?

I thought that line was fine.  And again, these are a literal handful of lines matched up against THOUSANDS given for just the player.

Use your brain. That has absolutely nothing to do with characterzation or dialogue.

No, but it ties into Shepard being a thoughtless ass when he doesn't see if his love interest wants to recover on the Normandy. Instead, she's off to fend for herself. There definitely should have been an option for him to do so.

It doesn't matter how many there are (well, it does, but not much), the fact that they are there are the issue, especially for a franchise so built upon its character and dialogue. Quantity only comes into account when you really sit back and count all of the bad lines in the game, and take them for just how bad they really are.

Come to think of it, that's a funny thing about ME. It's good dialogue is good, but by god it's bad dialogue is absolutely f**king terrible.

Also, BipolarParagonShepard: "THIS ISN'T THE TIME FOR JOKES" and AutoShepard: "The bed is harder than it looks".

There's a very good reason why ME 2 squadmates didn't come back in ME 3. It wouldn't have been possible to bring everyone back. One. Maybe two. So it probably wouldn't have been Miranda.

Honestly, I think I would have brought back one, in addition to Garrus and Tali, and I would have been very hesitent to pick Miranda. Grunt, too. Those two seem to be the most popular suggestions.

Ummm, who instead of miranda?  Given Legion and Mordin's plot neccessity.

Seriously, what ME2 squaddie was more important than miranda, other than possibly tali/garrus (who come back)?

It's not about importance at all. In fact, it's closer to the opposite. I'd rather bring back a squadmate that was somewhat minor to have more character development.

And honestly...I think I might have picked Samara.

So who, apart from Miranda, would have any plot relevance in ME3? Jacob? Kasumi? Zaeed? Grunt? Thane? Samara?

And exactly what would Samara have to contribute, aside from absolutely nothing?
