I don't think there was an "intended path", so much as the major romances. The three from ME1 were all equal, ME2 was MIranda/Jack/Jacob, and ME 3 went back to the original 3 (as evidenced by the original game-ending slides).

Yeah, I don't think there's any 'conspiracy'. The game was rushed, therefore, they made the decision to put a little more into the party characters. It's partly why everyone's got tweaked scenes rather than completely exclusive ones, really.krukow wrote...
