Don't want to see a heroic sacrifice option unless it only comes about as a cumulative result of certain choices you have made during game. Don't want to have to be selfish or a coward to get a happy ending with for Shep & Miranda.

I see the games as a medium to interactively write my version of Shepard's story. For that reason, my first playthrough is never my canon playthrough. I won't go for the "best" results in everything, and in fact I may build in tragic events like team member deaths, but there is usually a core set of results I am working towards in any one playthrough.

I do that with other playthroughs but they don't feel personal to me or have anywhere near the emotional impact.

I doubt Shep will have a forced death. Remember there will be the NG+ option in ME3, like there was in ME2. You can't very well do an NG+ if Shep died.

I'm not even sure there'll be an ending where Shep can sacrifice him/herself in order to win.

I'm pretty sure there will be. It's not like they have to worry about Shep for future installments.

@jtav:

And yet a character we've played for three games dies as cannon. That's crap and you're always the depressing one. I'll be honest: I'm up for freedom of speech and sharing of opinions, but you really make coming to this thread feel like crap. It's kinda of a chore to try to ignore your posts when you do it so often.

Seek help. <-- This is a joke, BTW.

I'm of the opinion we can choose Shep's fate. He'll die if we don't fulfill certain requiements during ME 3. Choices matter and at some point, we should be allowed to make a wrong one (or a few) by mistake without ever knowing it was until much later. He'll live if we can get the stars to line up just the right way to carry on the fight. That's how I'd like ME 3 choices to be.

I think you've misunderstood jtav, LuxDragon. All she claims is that there will be an ending (among others) where Shepard sacrifices himself, as an answer to Td1984 who said he does not believe that. She explicitly said she believes we won't be forced into such an ending (previous page). Except - that's added by me - as a consequence of certain decisions.

In other words, we are on the same page. We will be able to make it so that Shepard and Miranda both survive, but if we make decisions a certain non-optimal way, that might mean the galaxy won't be saved unless Shepard sacrifices himself.

If they butcher Miranda and TIM's characters I probably would want my Shepard to die.

I was just saying that I find it unlikely that Shep will have a forced death to achieve victory as that would make it extremely difficult to do an NG+. Not that there's no chance of it happening.

After all, in ME2, you could only get an NG+ by surviving the SM (granted you could die post-SM if you were foolish enough to romance Morinth).

Is it considered romance or suicide?

Well, then, we are all agreed - those who want a heroic sacrifice will be able to get one, those who don't want that will be able to avoid it.

What I was worrying about earlier was a third possibility: that an ending might change Shepard so much that it will prevent him from having a future with his chosen LI. For instance, he might be required to join with an AI. And that to avoid that *and* the sacrifice, the necessary conditions might not be to our liking.

It's considered Too Dumb To Live.

That actually sounds kind of neat, joining with an AI. Then again, my impression of Retribution was that the Reaper implants wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the mind control. Find a way to kill the consciousness within, and superstrength and agility are incredibly attractive.

"Mass Effect 3 will be at Gamescom on the show floor with a playable demo and in the EA Community Lounge. Members of the dev team will be on hand to answer your questions. If you cant make it to the show tune in to BioWare TV for live Gamescom coverage . So if you are in the Cologne, Germany area come say hi!"

So, if your going to Gamescom...ask those Miranda questions!

Canon is short for canonical, meaning it happens within the established context of the story.  Very few things in Mass Effect are actually canon, which I think is what makes this game so beautiful.  Shepard can have any number of backgrounds, be famous for any number of things, look different, sound different, act different, and it's not going "against canon".

Most people have what you might call a "headcanon", which is what our Shepard has done in the game, complete with what we tell ourselves to fill in the gaps left by the story.

ah i see.. That makes sense:) Easier to understand all the posts. Im sooo looking forward to ME3, and thats rather unusual for me since its kinda like seven months or something until release. But it all looks so awesome, and i do look forward to hanging out with Mordin,Garrus,Wrex and Miranda again.. The only squadmates i will ever need:) Im glad to see that Miranda will return in ME3, and i do hope we get to play with her (you dirty bastards) you know i meant go on missions etc.

I am currently trying to have as few people alive as possible in the ME universe on my renegade save, Miranda and Mordin is the prefered two to survive.. wonder how that will effect ME3... And how might that effect mirandas role if there are basicly no crewmembers alive? Will she be there all the time?

And NG+ means "New Game+", where everything (stats, weapons, etc.) carry over to the new game. At the end of the SM in ME2, you had the option to save for export to ME3, start a New Game+ or continue to play and wrap up any unfinished missions you wanted to undertake.
