I find her EXTREMELY useful in combat because she has every skill i require for a firefight. My other crew member is the one that changes depending on the mission.
Miranda is definitely one of the most useful squad members, due to the Warp/Overload/Squad Buff combo.

Just saying that I did an analysis of the results of one of the big off-site polls made by XX55XX, and according to that one, Tali is more controversial than Miranda, though that may have something to do with the attitude of her fans in the days of the old Tali threads.
Perhaps. Anyway, my point was not that other characters are not also potentially provocative in certain ways. Ideally, from a creative standpoint, most of them would be, and quite a few of them are to a greater or lesser extent. Miranda was developed to be on the more extreme edge of that spectrum in both directions.
Basically, the misconception that you get from some fans, in a variety of settings, is that characters are designed to be liked or loved exclusively. Some are designed to get a strong reaction both ways.
Any game also needs some relatively safe characters, of which Garrus is probably the most successful example in ME. Jacob was apparently supposed to play a similar role, though it did not work out especially well. Vega in ME3 (probably).

Anyone want to place bets on my ability to get through the romance? Last time led to the kill 'em all end.

I'd like Miranda to continue to be somewhat, ah, difficult to like at times. I enjoyed her prickliness.
Shepard: (pinned down by a Cerberus sniper) Why is there a Cerberus strike team here?
Miranda: (reloading her SMG) They were in the mission breifing! Don't tell me you ignored it again!
Shepard: I skimmed it!
Miranda: Oh you skimmed it? I spend my nights pouring over intelligence reports so that this sort of thing doesn't happen!
Shepard: Things usually work out fine!
Miranda: One day your bloddy luck will run out and you'll wish you read the breifing!
Shepard: (throws a grenade that takes out the sniper) Looks like my luck lives to fight another day Miss Lawson.
Miranda: Of course it does.

Not a good example for Miranda being difficult to like. Because she's spot on here. Hell, *I* wish Shepard wouldn't be so bloody lucky in spite of his being as subtle as a dropping anvil. And I play him. I would absolutely love Miranda for such a comment.Dr. Doctor wrote...

Not that I would want her to make it to my Shepard. He *always* reads the briefings.

I'd rather have her comment on something that actually happens in the game. For instance the "reasoning" - if you can call it that - he uses at Tali's trial. Whatever the choice, getting Tali exonerated is always a jarring experience. He really shouldn't get away with that crap.jtav wrote...
Oh, I'd love a comment like that. I'm thinking it half the time, Do you kniw what it's like having a character you don't like or respect?
I wouldn't like to have Shepard railroaded into even more stupidity just so Miranda can get off a sarcastic comment, however much I want her to make one.

Oh, I expect she'll continue to be a tad ruthless and difficult to please at times, partly for meta-story reasons. You want a mix of personalities and, among the main female cast, Miranda fills that role the best.

I've been wondering about that analogy. The metaphor doesn't appear to fit, because that would have meant her running away was misguided and she would be expected to "repent" at some time, puttiing Miranda's father in the right. I can't see that happening. It would also imply that she lived off her father's money after she ran away, but that could only have happened if she stole it, and I couldn't fault her for that. Apart from that, when she says "I threw away everything he ever game me when I ran", it doesn't seem exactly like she stole from him.LexieTheT-Rexy wrote...
Something that caught my eye while looking through the achievements a second ago...I noticed that Miranda is labeled 'The Prodigal'...and Niket says in her loyalty mission that she has been taking her father's money for years. I wonder why they named her that, unless BioWare had some sort of plan to follow the Parable of the Prodigal Son and ultimately have her reunite with her father; though that seems completely unlikely considering her severe hatred for the man.
I can't see Miranda's story follow any of the patterns of the parable. I wonder if some writer didn't know the meaning of the term and used the biblical analogy without looking it up. As I understand, it isn't exactly common, right? Perhaps it was just used as a term for "lost" - in some way Miranda is a lost daughter, as is Oriana.
Edit:
I've speculated about a reconciliation between Miranda and her father, but it doesn't seem likely. Even if Miranda was mistaken in some of her feelings about her childhood, the man sent mercenaries to capture his daughter away from her new family, and is apparently responsible for Miranda's underdeveloped self-esteem.
Yeah, it wouldn't necessarily 'fit', but it would be an interesting confrontation coming face to face with Mr. Lawson. Though, like I have said before many-a-times...I really want to see him in the game, or at least some DLC.

I partially disagree. Another aspect of the romance that I liked was that the paragon and renegade choices created different vibes and to a certain extent outcomes when it came to interacting with Miranda (something that I personally think was unique from all LI) . i.e. the paragon choices lightened her up considerably and renegade seemed to 'feed' that perfect/ ice queen persona she had. I think her character should be 'lighter' or 'prickly' depending on the way your Shepard interacts/interacted with her. After all that is what 'character progression' is all about; evolution through interacting with the environment/ characters.
Don't get me wrong. I think she still should have that 'mission comes first' attitude that made her seem really professional, but for Me3 it should either be toned down significantly or else that cold exterioir completely removed. If you think about it the only person she's ever truely become 'close' to was Sherpard, and to a small extent Jacob. The game does a good job in portraying her as being confused as to the changes in her personality (as highlight by Liara at the end of LOTSB and the 'hug' scene), ME 3 in my opinion should emphasise this change in her personality.

Miranda: So how exactly are you planning on defending yourself at the trial?
Shepard: The same way that we formed the squad for the Omega-4 mission.
Miranda: So the great and mighty Commander Shepard is going to bludgeon his way through diplomacy with his everyman logic?
Shepard: It's worked before.
Miranda: Considering that your idea of arbitration involves out-yelling the prosecution I think that I'd rather take my chances defending myself.

I agree that both paths should be in game, but it's likely they will be, since they basically correspond to the Paragon/Renegade courses of action the player can choose.
I enjoy both versions of most of the choices, such as Miranda killing Niket or Shepard preventing that from happening.
@Dr. Doctor, funny stuff. As the protagonist, Shepard warps reality to his will and apparently controls the thoughts of those around him. I imagine it's pretty frustrating to be a secondary character in a story like that
