Part of what you're picking up on may be that Bioware tends, I think, in ME, to write characters that can swing either Paragon or Renegade depending on the player's choices.
An opposite example would be DA:O, where the party members have a sort of fixed perspective, and approve or disapprove accordingly. Gifts can circumvent this, especially via DLC, but basically, if you do too many things that Morrigan or Leliana disapprove of, then romance is out of the question. Whereas in ME the characters have to have a certain flexibility.
So with Miranda, she can drift slightly Paragon, depending on your choices, whereas they felt they needed to give Liara a darker edge to make her collaboration with a Renegade Shepard more plausible.
