Is it odd that as much as I complain, Miranda and Liara are the LIs I come back to as Shep. You'd think it would be Kaidan or at least the romances I praise.

Well, sort of... but not really, when you think about it. I gather your fanfic is mostly Miranda and/or Liara related, so it makes sense that you would have strong opinions on those. And that you would find fault with them so that, creatively, you have some place to go in your own work.

Nah, we're just messing around. Vertigo originally made one of Vega raging over a Miranda cameo. And then he adjusted it slightly due to my comment that he quoted above. Which was very thoughtful on his part, I might add. But it's just for fun.

I think it's because, from a fan's point of view, it can seem like a convenient way to please everyone. But anyway, yeah, it won't work like that. Nor should it imo.

Basically, yeah, if Miranda's involvement depended on the romance, then that's all it would be. Not good. I'm not sure you'd like the results yourself, Eyeshield, if the game were actually designed that way.
It wouldn't be good for any of the other characters either, of course, though I would care more about Miranda. It also poses all kinds of practical problems, which I think rule it out as a concept. Just purely from a design point of view.
Re: Miranda as a romance option, I do play through the Mirimance most of the time, but I'm not really interested in the character primarily from that point of view. I view that more as a bonus. Mostly I want to see Miranda kick some ass, be awesome, and receive more character development, including resolving some/all of the hanging plot threads related to her.

You know, outside BSN and the internet as a whole, Miranda is probably just as popular as Garrus. I wouldn't worry about her role being diminished at all. There are players who bought the last game just for her, after all. That would be an undeniably-large-but-absent-from-BSN part of the fandom, alienated just like that.
