They don't need two "hot chicks" in the squad. In ME2 there was only one (Miranda) plus an Asari (Samara).
It's true that not everyone will have Ashley, but we'll probably have another human female. (like we'll get a human male, Vega). I really doubt that we'll have two Asari in the team. And I'll be disappointed, they could put another alien.

Jack is pretty gorgeous, actually. That didn't work out too well for other reasons, I guess, though I personally like the character a lot. Aria seems pretty likely as a squad member at this point, thus defying the "we already have an asari" arguments of the recent past.

To force Ashley's popularity with new look? They've done fabulous job with Liara in that regard.

Miranda-izing? Hihihi.
Well. Even with the change in appearance, Ashley is still your girl next door and Miranda is the Bond Girl, whose cold demeanour is just a pretence to hide the fact that she is really emotionally tortured loner who will go to any lengths to get the job done.

Take your pick. :)

EDIT: Aria. Hell YES.

I actually like Jack's look, especially her face, but I don't think at her as gourgeous. I don't see all this evidence about Aria being a squad member (I read about the avatar on a Bioware pulse episode, bu I don't see any other proof about that). I like Aria, but I don't see her as a squadmate. I'd prefer a Salarian or a Krogan.

The evidence about Aria is the placeholder icon, the fact that she's getting a miniseries, and the fact that it appears TIM destroys Omega in said miniseries.

More likely, it seems, they're bringing Ashley up to the level that the squad mates were in ME2 in terms of sexualization and stylization. They did the same thing to Kaidan as they did Garrus - bulk him up, make him look more dangerous and battle hardened. Ashley getting prettified is nothing new.
They *have* to alter her look anyway, due to the fact that they're no longer doing the generic outfits of ME1, and are instead going for something unique.
They *can't* do the phoenix armor again because it's unique only in color, people would complain about the pink and white barbie armor again, and Ashley is now a spectre.

Since Mass Effect 2, female soldier in the squad just doesn't cut it.
Miranda - "Femme fatale" wearing catsuit with high heels in battle. You had to pay to get her armor.
Samara - Space paladin/knight showing chest despite being focused on her job as a Justicar.
Jack - Riot girl wearing belts as clothing.
Tali - Alien in suit that shows off curves.
Kasumi - Ninja in a tight fitting outfit.
Morinth - Space vampire in a seductive outfit.

So I don't think Ashley's new outfit has any bearing on Miranda, and instead seems more likely that they are just keeping their comic book heroine standard of sexy and impractical.
Edit: Thanks for correction, Ieldra.

Ash *had* an iconic look, but they discarded that in favor of, well, Miranda-izing her. Why do that if Miranda's still around?

Because many who like Ashley wanted to see her with her hair down (me included)? Because they wanted to do long hair in ME1 but couldn't for technical reasons? To increase her sex appeal? You don't think they wouldn't want all human female LIs to have some of that? Even Jack looks actually quite striking.

Also I suppose that Ashley and Miranda would look very different in combat, with Ashley being a Soldier and all. And lastly, I don't think they'll make a lot of advertising with squadmates this time, as opposed to ME2.

@Collider:
Samara has made no such vow, as she explicitly tells you in a conversation. Otherwise, I think you have a point, though I'm not quite glad about it, since I don't like that comic-book style.

I didn't know about the last part. Thank you. I like Aria, but I don't like the fact that we'll get two Asari in the team. They could've left Liara in the SB role without make her a squadmate. Oh well, I hope we'll get to meet Wrex with Aria if she's a squadmate.

He does not destroy Omega:
Spoilers below:

"The Omega space station has fallen and Aria, Omega's pirate queen, is on the run from an enemy greater than anything she's ever faced before. Learning that the battle is merely the first skirmish in a war that will reshape the galaxy, Aria must retake Omega and lead a new charge to save her empire!"

I don't think that rules out TIM's involvement. Cerberus and the reapers are "allied" right now, and for most of the galaxy may as well be called "the" enemy collectively.

Ah, then if she'll be a squadmate, she'll be probably a temporary.

The "she is replacing Miranda" reaction is the natural (and perhaps somewhat paranoid) fan reaction at this stage of the game. Obviously, it has crossed my mind as well, so I don't mean that in a "you are being paranoid" sort of way.

I am being a bit paranoid, too, depending on my mood :P

But for that reason, I'm very skeptical of that reaction.

It makes little sense anyway, since Miranda is the character with the prominent voice/face model and the higher profile overall. If Miranda were to be replaced in the sense you are suggesting, it would more likely be by a new character with a similarly high-profile voice actress (so maybe an unannounced character).

Ah, then if she'll be a squadmate, she'll be probably a temporary.

It could be something like this:
You help Aria take back Omega and she agrees to join your team in thanks and to make sure that the reapers don't threaten her empire again. Or something similar to Zaeed where she joins before you do this - Shepard promises to take back Omega later.
Personally, I don't care about Aria at all and would prefer that she wasn't a squad mate, but it seems a distinct possibility that she would be.

I'm merely pointing ou t that Omega isn't destroyed, just captured by whatever Cerberus was working on.

And also the one with a pricey VA who's filming schedule they have to work around. Fun fact: in my first post, I said she wouldn't be a squaddie. At least I'm consistent?

Point taken Vertigo. But anyone want to bet she'll flee, swearing vengeance?

Who Aria? Well yeah, she made this big deal about being Omega in ME2...and it seems she will return in issue #4:

No, I mean she'll flee at the end, thanks to Leng and friends. And why can't the interior art be that good?

Probably considering Leng is alive in ME3...as mentioned before there might be a mission to secure Omega for Aria and in term she would offer support via Mercs for the final battle...she will be a temp squadmate for this mission

Again that's what we can speculate...I don't want another asari on the team and her staying with Shepard after (they regain control of Omega) seems OOC for her

At least to me it does.

Could be. The temporary companion, then faction leader scenario makes sense for the character.

*romances Ash* Please be civil about this come ME3, ladies. I'm fond of both of you. I fully expect you to hate each other, but you've bigger things to fight about.

yes, which breast size is bigger. Image IPB(not really)
seriosly though, they gotta have some tension, cause like we all know, they are natural rivals(if not enemies) and if you romanced them, they WILL fight for shepard, one will win shep's heart, the other a loser, or shep will lose both and be FOREVER ALONE.(though I hope to have a paragon/renagade option, to choose one and not get the other pissed(probably will be pissed, but then thats love, right? you win and lose some.))

Well, of course they'd fight. Oil and water. But romance should not be the big issue. I'd prefer they behave like adults there.
