And we don't have confirmation on Legion, who's a dead ringer for Tali anyway.

That's basically a plus if they can fill the same squad slot.

There are two things that I will add to this seething mass of intriguing speculation, and then I must go get some work done:

1) An element of choice in squad selection, which Casey Hudson would seem to have recently confirmed, would really change the way the squad works in a big way. That muddies the waters of the type of speculation we are doing here. A lot.

2) The devs have been very consistent on the idea that the squad will be smaller and more intimate this time around. ME2 started out with ten. So I would think 8 would be the absolute max for a smaller squad. Maybe less. That makes some of the ideas thrown around here pretty unlikely, I think. If you have permanent squad members for each role + at least two returning squad members + at least one "surprise" twist squad member + DLC, then you are quickly in the range of the ME2 squad in terms of numbers.

Unless an element of choice is thrown in that makes it impossible to recruit everyone at once.

Let me put it this way: I'd be shocked if Jacob gets more than Thane, and wouldn't be surprised if he got less. About the only way I could see more was if you had to choose between him and someone else.

I'll still hope for my earlier idea that most former squadmembers will be 'recruitable' but not all in the same playthrough. So Jacob could have a full story in one game while being only a temp in another.

Honestly? I think that's way too much work on the devs. I'm still betting the GI article is mostly accurate, with perhaps one slot filled by choice.

only if you think of it as two different stories when really the 'temp mission' story is a subset of the 'full squaddie' story.

I'd say you just described my ideal situation with regards to returning characters.  I doubt we'll be so lucky on the matter of companion choice though.  As ever I keep my fingers crossed for "core squad" status for Miranda and Grunt.

That's what I think. Everything that came after sounded like wriggling around having to say outright that many fans will be disappointed because their favorites will only get one mission. I want Miranda to be one of that core team, damn it.

Well, the article actually indicated four types of characters: core, recuitable, temporary for a mission or two, and cameo.

I think "core" must correspond to those characters who can't be dead and therefore don't vary. VS, Liara and Vega, for the moment.

The second category would be Garrus and Tali, for the moment.

Third category would be temps for a mission or two. Mordin, Thane, Wrex... Doubtless there will be some others.

Cameo = DLC, I suppose.

Anyway, I agree with jtav that, if there is an element of choice, it is likely only for a squad slot or two. But that would still be significant, and would likely involve the characters in category #2. Miranda is almost certainly in either group 2 or group 3.

The only people i really care to see back are Miranda, Garus and Tali. In that order lol. If grunt or samara is in it but Miranda is left out i will tear down Biowares front door and tell them exactly what i am thinking. XD

Or we could be taking the Fallout approach, where we'll have a large number of party members who go on missions with us but aren't with us all the time.

If I were a writer, I'd use her in one of two ways: as central as possible without being mandatory or to rip your heart out. They said they'd be using the stats gathered in ME2. Now, the only way the game has to measure popularity is who's in the squad most often. That's Miranda. But that's most;y because she's OP. So they rigged the stats. Why did they rig the stats? And her LM is the only one you don't have to go out of your way for. Nudging you to do it without forcing. Again, why?

That's what I'll do if Garrus and Tali are in it and Miranda is not.

I wouldn't be worried about Samara and Grunt. Samara will be a cameo, and I have this feeling we won't have a token krogan this time around. Not unless Wrex rejoins. You can take that as a prediction.

I think we'll have a krogan. It's just Grunt is one of those characters I actively don't want on squad.

Do you have playthroughs where you don't let him out of his pod?

I think the question is did they want to maximize her presence just for ME2 or is there more to it? I doubt they had detailed plans for what to do with her in ME3 before the stats from ME2 came in.

One, but he's handy for HtL. I don't mind seeing him again. I just don't want him on-squad.

I admit, I'd prefer Grunt to Wrex. Why don't you like him?

Or did they? There is more than a whiff of manipukating the results to justify a decision already made.

What's wrong with Grunt? To the Krogans he seems a pretty important character given that we don't know exactly how Okeer made him or what his true purpose is. If he is important in terms of genophage then he's gonna come back isn't he?

I really want to see Miranda, Samara and Tali again, I feel they are each fairly significant to the plot, i.e. Miranda connection to Cerberus - Samara's influence as a Justicar amongst Asari society and of course Tali role in the Migrant Fleet. She may be an admiral. I believe that all of the squad members are important in some form or other and I would like to see that addressed in ME 3.

That's just my view.

Considering you had to practically go out of your way to kill Miri off, I'd assume she'd be category 2. There had to be a reason for that. Again, that's just my theory.

Oh, there's a reason. You need a biotic for the long walk. The question is whether they'll use her high survival rate to justify a larger role.

Miranda isn't considered an ideal choice for biotic specialist. Someone will be swept away if she's used. Isn't that right?

Right, but it's possible for all other biotics to be dead/unrecruited and she has lines after that.

I sat down the other day and tried to figure out how bad things could get if you ignore the game's advice and didn't do loyalty missions. Basically Shepard dies. Even if you make optimal choices during the SM, Shepard will not survive the race back to the Normandy without loyal squaddies.

It makes sense when you sit and think about it but I suppose I just had some sort of mental disconnect when it came to what the results would be. Or I thought the results of HtL would be more variable than they are.
