On Mr. Lawson: I too think he'll have some sort of presence regardless, particularly if the plot calls for large amounts of private resources (agreeing with the character recycling posited by flemm) I wonder about this possibility though: if it comes down to it that we have to kill him, Jacob comes in and does it instead before we can, sort of repaying the favor done for his own father. I wonder how Miranda would take that.

Well, I'm a tad doubtful that Jacob would pop up in a situation like that. I think Jacob is ripe for a "Blaze of Glory" type of appearance, where he goes out in a big explosion while saving a bunch of people... make it really big, like a whole planet, from the Reapers (sacrificing himself).

In general, I hope the characters who only appear for a mission or two don't just hang around pointlessly for a love scene at the end, in an effort to appease disappointed fans. Miranda included, if she's only around for a mission or two. Better to end their stories with an exclamation point.

I think absolutely everyone will be back for the final battle with a love scene, if applicable. This is also when you'll hash out any love triangles. The reason I made the "fair" comment is you'd be amazed at the sheer number of people who think almost anyone will be permanent, as long as they were that Shep's LI. That won't happen, nor would I want it to.

Right, of course. Still, I don't really expect Jacob to pop in and out of the story like that. It's more likely to be one big appearance at a key moment. For characters like Jacob and Samara, there's really nothing that leaps out at you as a major thing that they should be involved with. But with Jacob I think one of the best things that could be done is showing him willing to sacrifice himself to save others, which is basically the opposite of what his father did.

Huge benefit to being on the squad for a significant chunk of the game is that you are more likely to get all those satisfying little character moments, like your idea of Jacob being involved in the scene with Miranda's father. I'd love to see a Miranda-Jacob and Miranda-Jack scene along with way, for example. Which we would probably get if Miranda is on the squad, but probably not otherwise.

Maybe. Though I dunno. The whole war story vibe pretty much guarantees a death or two along the way, I think. If a character doesn't fit on the squad, it probably makes sense to milk the whole situation for maximum drama.

I think your guarantee is probably a little hasty tbh. It would actually surprise me a lot if there aren't a couple of unavoidable deaths, though maybe the player's actions determine who bites it.

To the untrained (read: american) ear they sound fairly similar. I used to get them mixed up myself when I was younger.

On topic, I'm going to state my support for Miranda. I'll take her over Ash any day of the week.

Well, each situation would be a little different, probably.  But I wouldn't rule anything out. It might ****** off the fans of a particular character if there is a guaranteed death, but let's face it, fans are going to be pissed no matter what. And, the thing is, an appearance like that could easily be a lot cooler and more fitting for a character than a bland mission + love scene.

I doubt this would manifest as "character x will die here regardless". There's a difference between unavoidably pissing off the fans and unnecessarily pissing off the fans. Likely Shepard will have to make some sacrifices not just between characters but worlds as well. 

So a typical "save LI/squadmate or save a planet". Or the more devious inverted scenario where the obvious choice of aiding your LI actually gets them killed whereas if you saved the planet they managed to escape somehow. Don't know how much sense that makes ingame but I wouldn't put it past Bioware to pull a fast one like that.

On the subject of save LI or save a planet, I get the feeling that Miranda would be pretty angry if Shepard let an entire world get destroyed just to save her. But this is what most likely will happen:

Shepard: So it's save Miranda or save a world that's under attack from the Reapers?

Vega: That seems to be the case.

Vega: A Batarian colony.

Shepard: Alright let's go help Miranda then.

Vega: Wait, you're just going to let the Reapers destroy a colony?

Shepard: Not a colony, a Batarian colony. Jim, they killed my family, raid our colonies on a regular basis, and are generally despised by the galaxy as a whole. I say they're finally getting what's coming to them.

It is for this reason, why I'm glad I still have 2 characters( 1 I'm playing now...pics in the commander shepard thread) I'm playing through ME 1 with and counting those 4 characters whom's imports into ME 2 I need to complete before March 6th...

She'd better get over it.  My Shep would torch the planet himself it it meant she lives. Also regarding the dialog I'd feel Shepard would cut it off a lot sooner.

I agree and maybe I'm just reacting that way because of the fact that my shepards are usually Renegons by nature( though 2 are Paragade)...

You know I'm tempted to replay my main Shepards from ME1 just to keep Kate Bowman alive. Never thought she'd become the reason to save humanity in the end.

And I'd choose Miranda, too.

I would.

So far everything Bioware has done in ME has been played so painfully straight it's become almost boring. Subtlety? Unexpected plot twists? Characters turning against you? Nada. Nothing. I like Bioware's characters as a rule, and the basic plot of the ME trilogy is interesting, but ME's storytelling leaves a lot to be desired.

So maybe we'll get a Virmire 2.0 or a character vs. a million lives saved one, but the outcome of everything will be painfully obvious every single time. If not, then credit to them, but I don't hold my breath. Even the DA team went back to playing things straight after their brilliant idea of the Orzammer outcomes in DAO. *That* was a surprise worth remembering. And against all odds, I'm hoping for something similar with the Collector base.

I never got my import bonuses, so I'm paranoid the save is corrupt. Also, there's supposed to be a penalty for changing classes in ME3, and I want to be an Infiltrator.
