If I ever, EVER thought there was a batarian-hatin' Shepard, it's Jonathan Shepard for sure  !

It's only a matter of time before this thread hits 1000 pages. Miranda is that good.

Plus, I always have a scene in my head where my Shepard introduces Miranda to his mom. It's all ../../../images/forum/emoticons/love.pngand../../../images/forum/emoticons/sick.png at the same time. Oh the day I get to write that scene....

My cannon Shepard, James is a Spacer/War Hero who is based off of the Winter Soldier from the Captain America comics. For him having both parents serving as comissioned officers aboard various vessels left little room for a family life. Life in the Alliance Navy has made the relationship that he holds with his parents as more professional than personal, they represent his superior officers, not his family.

Miranda: You're pacing around like a caged bear.

Shepard: The Normandy's going to be meeting the Orizaba at the Alliance rallying point in Alpha Centauri in a matter of hours.

Miranda: And that particular dreadnought just so happens to be captained by your mother. Wait a minute are you nervous?

Shepard: Very.

Miranda: You can go on suicide missions, fight eldritch abominations on a semi-regular basis, among other things that fly in the face of common sense and you're afraid of talking to your mother?

Shepard: We were never that close, up until I became a Spectre we hadn't spoken in years. Hell, she only found out that I was alive through reports from Alliance Intelligence. On top of that I have no idea of what I'm going to tell her.

Miranda: You could try the truth.

Shepard: Tell her about Lazarus? About the fact that I was willing to join Cerberus? The Alliance is her life Miranda, how do you think she'll react when I tell her what I've done in the past year?

Miranda: She's not just a Captain you know, she's your mother someone who I'm sure cares about you. She doesn't need to know all the details, but would it be so bad if she knew she had a sone who cares about her?

Shepard: (smirks) Where have I heard that before?

Miranda: It was good advice.

Shepard: That it was. If you're not busy maybe things would go better if I introduced her to the woman I love?

Miranda: (chuckles) I'd save that shock until after this mess is sorted out. Besides, that's not something that should be done over a quantum comnlink.

Shepard: You have a point there. Thanks for hearing me out, I apologize if I interrupted anything important.

Miranda: Don't be, its good to know that you're safe.

Shepard: The feeling's mutual. I'll talk to you soon Miri.

Miranda: Good luck Shepard. (the quantum link closes)

Nor is the DLC I'm dreaming of: a mission featuring some of the stuff Miranda's doing offscreen in the main game, letting us play as Miranda.

Do you love Mass Effect ? Or just Miranda  ?

LOL.
Oh, I love the universe....and ME1's (and ME3's, what we know of it)  story, and most of the characters. The protagonist, however, isn't one of my favorites. See this old thread about why. I find it much easier to identify with Miranda, so of course I'd want to play as her.

Sorry, I know this one's really long, but once you start writing something, it takes a life of its own.

 *Snip* Excellent dialogue scene *Snip*

Nice. That's a very different take than mine. See, I've always imagined that Miranda would be the nervous one, since she's not used to dealing with 'family' situations. Chances are that they wouldn't actually meet until the Reapers have been dealt with, and they would set up a lunch date at some fancy diner with a great view.

It would go something like the novel-length post below. I wasn't intending on writing anything really long, but once you start, you can't stop.

Miranda: *checks the time* It's 12:30, Shepard. I thought you said she'd be here by now.
Shepard: *Leans back in his chair* She's a Rear-Admiral, Miranda. She's got a lot of people counting on her, and she has to prioritize. Whatever she's doing, we can wait.
Miranda: Is that...normal, for her? To put her command ahead of her family?
Shepard: Well, for the last 40 years, the only family she's had has been me and my father. And for the last ten, just me. Well, depending on how you count...
Miranda: Your death.
Shepard: *sad half smile* Well, suffice to say, mom always knew father and I could handle ourselves. And when he was on tour, my father did the same thing. I can count on one hand the number of times all three of us were together for more than a week at one time.
Miranda: Sounds very lonely.
Shepard: Not as lonely as you'd think. We still got together for most holidays, and I spent a lot of time with each of them separately. To be honest, it was pretty nice. They taught me what it meant to be devoted to something.
Miranda: But they had a child. You should have come first.
Shepard: That's the thing, Miranda. They always put me first. Having a child with another service member isn't smiled on in the Alliance. You need to take time off when the other parent is still active duty, sometimes they follow you around on-tour. It's not a good career move. But I just...happened. And it hurt their careers, both of them. My dad barely made captain before he died, and my mother was still an XO when I became a Spectre. But they had me anyway. And they gave me a great childhood. As devoted as my parents were to their duties, I was never in doubt that they loved me more. And that kept me going even at the worst times. That might sound corny, but it's the truth.
Miranda: *laughs* Yes, that is really corny, Alan. But it's also...intimidating.
Shepard: *Looks at Miranda quizzically* Intimidating? How?
Miranda: *Gets up and looks out a nearby window into space* How do you balance that? Being so devoted to a cause you love, but still put something else you hold even more dear ahead of that, and not go insane?
Shepard: *Stands up and walks behind Miranda, putting his arms around her and giving her a light kiss on the cheek* I would guess the same way you and I do, huh?
Miranda: I always thought it was insane to try, until I met you. And even then, I wasn't sure we'd be able to do it. But if your mother managed to do it, while raising a fine son...
Shepard: Damn fine.
Miranda: Don't get cocky, you ass. What I mean is, she obviously managed to do what I've never thought I could. That's what I mean by intimidating.
Shepard: *chuckles* Now this is something. Miranda Lawson, a woman I've seen disintegrate Collectors with her mind, walk through Hell and back with me, and perform acts of bravery that put me to shame, is nervous at the prospect of meeting my mother. Never thought I'd see the day.
Miranda: Oh shut up. It's not like I have a lot of practice with this sort of thing, Alan. I mean...what is she expecting? What should I expect? Have you even told her about-
Shepard: No. If I did that, she would try to give you your space to compensate for how much she would want to hover. I want her to get to know you. And I want you to get to know her. You two are the most important people to me. And before things get any more complicated, I think it's best you two be introduced. Properly.
Miranda: *Puts a hand on his arm gratefully* Thank you, Alan.
*Shepard looks around, hearing approaching footsteps. Miranda stands as still as a statue, continuing to look out the window.*
Hannah(Shepard): Sorry I'm late, honey. Got here as fast as I could.
Shepard: It's all right, Mom. How's the fleet?
Hannah: Oh skip the small talk, Alan. I came here to meet the girl the whole Alliance is talking about. Funny how my son falls in love, and I'm the last human to know.
Shepard: *Gives an apologetic stare* Sorry Mom. Won't happen again.
Hannah: It'd better not. Now introduce us, son.
Shepard: All right. *Puts an arm around Miranda's shoulder as she turns around, and they walk closer to Hannah.* Mom, I'd like you to meet Miss Miranda Lawson. Miranda, this is my mother, Hannah Shepard.
*Miranda clears her throat, Shepard drops his arm from her shoulder and she offers her hand.*
Miranda: It's nice to meet you, Mrs. Shepard. Alan's told me a lot about you.
Hannah: *Takes Miranda's hand and looks her over appraisingly* Likewise, Miss Lawson. My son tells me that you've saved his life.
Miranda: I think most of his former team can make that claim, ma'am.
*Miranda tries to let go of Hannah's hand, but the other woman holds on.*
Hannah: I'm sure, but my son talked about a very specific time. It was shortly after the Battle of the Citadel, when the first Normandy was destroyed. He dropped off the grid. Everyone, including me, thought he was dead. He said that you are the person most responsible for saving his life. And that it was your ingenuity and dedication that kept him alive when nothing else could. In short, that you are the biggest reason my boy is still alive. That true, Miss Lawson?
*Miranda nods, and Hannah drops her hand only to pull her into a tight embrace*
Hannah: Then from the bottom of my heart, Miss Lawson, thank you.
Miranda: *Gingerly returns the hug.* You're...welcome, Mrs. Shepard. END SCENE.

I tried to keep Miranda as in-character as possible, considering I'm writing after the end of a game that hasn't been released yet. But my main focus was getting Hannah Shepard right. So....*nervously looks around* what do you guys think? Good? Adequate? Sucketh?

@CastonFolarus:
It strikes me as odd how Miranda would be intimidated, considering that she devoted herself to a cause while watching over Oriana. Sure, it's note quite the same, but similar enough. The actual introduction is another oddity. Miranda appears almost meek. I really can't see her that way.

Otherwise, hmm....nice enough I guess, but I cannot connect to the scene - neither yours nor Dr. Doctor's, btw. Too....conventional? Probably it's just me. I don't feel I'm the right person to make more extensive comments about the scenes.

I take that interrupt with everyone but my "Talk someone down if possible" Shep.

I admit I'm very very tempted even with the above Shep to take that interrupt on Garrus loyalty mission with the batarian working on the gunship. I always LMAO at it. I'm a terrible person. :D

Wow, that's one of the few interupts that a few of my renegade Sheps don't take. Mostly because I find it insane that not one merc heard the guy screaming himself to death. Seriously, how does Shep just get away with that?

I just pretend that they're alone because the next attack group just left. I always take the interrupt because, well, it's a *gunship*. What that thing can do to a squad even when damaged we get to see. The only thing I find annoying is that I can't steal it. I want a gunship, too

Anyhoo... I have a question for one and all. They say that "opposites attract' and some other stuff Image IPB but I was wondering... Which Psychological/Background Profile of Commmander Shepard do you think Operatrive Miranda Lawson would be most attracted too?

Given how 'the mission comes first' she is at times.I sometimes think that Miri would fancy "the Butcher of Torfan Shepard most of all.Their sort of like 'two peas in a pod'. Both ruthless and efficent, stoic and or austere... But then I think that perhaps she would like someone who is very different from her, like my canon Shepard who is a war hero and colonist. His idealism and principle comes first attitude and no nonsense butt kicking.Has its charms...

I think most Shepards would have something to connect to for her and/or earn her respect: Earthborn - the street kid who clawed its way up to become the saviour of the galaxy. Spacer - an intact family. Colonist - an abject lessen why humanity must become more powerful. Ruthless - ruthless pragmatism. War Hero - did a great service for humanity. Sole Survivor - heroic determination.

If I had to select one origin, it would be Earthborn, both for the "opposites attract" effect and for the respect Shepard's determination and ambition to become more than a street kid would elicit from Miranda, but I'd find it hard to select one preferred background.

My personal preferred background is Earthborn/Sole Survivor. Shepard as a country bumpkin has never appealed to me and I find the Spacer background somewhat boring in spite of its potential. Ruthless is a little *too* ruthless for my taste and War Hero a little *too* classically heroic. I guess it's no wonder my Shepards tend to end up neutral on the Paragon/Renegade scale.

In my opinion the best background combination is Colonist/Ruthless. In that way Torfan became (for my Shepard) an act of vengeance for Mindoir. I used that combination for my Renegade Shepard. My main Shepard is Spacer/War Hero (I love the WH background, and I like the fact that Shep's mother is the Alliance).

I think part of the appeal for Colonist is that I grew up in the middle of nowhere myself. So, I can get inside Matt's head for that. The artistry is all him, though, as is the intensity.

And er,no comments on Portrait.

I like Earthborn because it hits close to home and I don't mean that we're both from Earth lol. I'm not an orphan either, but everything else is familiar.

And jtav why bother asking? Your writing is always good even if don't always like what you're writing about.

Sorry, almost overlooked it in the barrage of posts about other things. I find it hard to comment at the moment because I don't recall where the existing story ended (need to re-read, little time for that). It's also hard to get from your ME3 stuff back into the past. I like it and I have no particular issues I'd like to bring to your attention at the moment. And I'm *very* curious how this will continue.

Not a fan of blondes? :P  I'm either very unobservant, or the diffrence is minimal.

Earthborns. And sole survivors. There is just something in this background.
Second fav: colonist/ruthless.

No comparison, Brunette Miranda takes it by far !

Besides, that blonde hair looks a little ugly to be honest.
