My vanguard/paragon was devoted to Kaidan through all the trilogy, so I was really happy that their romance was treated right in ME3. That date on the Citadel has to be one of my favorite scenes!
... until I witnessed that ending. So, here's my take on what would have given me some closure.
Spoilers ahead!
Shepard didn't hesitate to jump into that beam of light to do the synergy because that meant she could save everyone without having to wipe out the synthetics (after all the interactions with EDI and Legion that was absolutely out of question) or controlling the reapers (after all they did? seriously). She knew she would have to sacrifice herself. Her essence is being absorbed by the light and she's having the flashbacks, seeing Kaidan's face last. The green light goes to merge organic and synthetic and to destroy the relays, the Normandy is trying to escape the blast and crashes in some unknow world...
And here is how things start to get different!
Joker and EDI are out there looking at the view, Kaidan gets out of the Normandy, thinking about
Shepard. The rest of the crew is also there, and after being relieved that they somehow got out alive, the mood is dark again as they remember Shepard and her sacrifice, they know what happened because of the synergy.
Kaidan feels something trying to reach him... not
something, someone. He can't believe at first, but after a moment's hesitation he goes to forest, looking around desperately, until he finds Shepard lying unconscious on the grass.
Turns out her feelings for Kaidan were so strong that her essence followed the Normandy until it
crashed and reconstructed her to be with him again.
A little fairy-tale-ish, not really well written and with lots of things to be explained, but they're back together and that is all I need.
(also, first time posting)
edit: I have no idea what just happened with my post.
