I have never been able to connect with Ashley. I think some of it has to do with my own religious beliefs, and to me she comes off a bit on the preachy side, when I happen to be a pagan. Actually I can say that is pretty much the entire reason I never could connect with Ashley. I guess it isn't fair, but because of the way I have been treated my adult life because I am pagan just carried over.
That said, even if I could do it, I can't not save Kaidan if for no other reason than soldiers are a dime a dozen and solid officers and biotics are rare and far between.
That's sort of funny.
Ashley is preachy the same way that Kaidan is whiny about his migraines meaning that they both mention the subjects in question but neither are really in your face about it. So, yeah, I'd say your personal experiences definitely rub you the wrong way.
That's OK though, I had a hard time with Cortez's marriage thing for similar reasons. The topic is a sensitive, highly-charged subject, and I had to remind myself that I was only tempted to be a d-bag about it because Cortez was a computer character and not a real person.
I love how real these characters are, that we actually feel like treating them like humans as opposed to video game characters. For me, at least.
I actually liked that Ashley mentioned her religious views, but I share her religion so that's probably a factor. And I agree with that you said in that some of Cortez made me a bit uncomfortable. I'm not a homophovbe, neither am I for or against their movement, but it's something I'm uncomfortable around and would rather not have to encounter if I can help it. I would never think of being mean to Cortez, I just generally avoided him. Same thing with Samantha and Diana.
I gotta say, Bioware's got guts. No one else out there is brave enough to throw around religion, homosexuality, sex scenes, philosophy, morality, etc, yet they can pack it into several games. Even if I don't agree on everything, I applaud them for going outside the box and beyond.
Now, imagine if they were movie makers instead...
