My best guess? To do something different. Every form of media these days (with the exception of Stephanie Meyer, it seems) has an irrational fear of the cliche. But, come on, let's face it - Cliches only become cliches because people use them so much. Why do people use them so much? Because they WORK. You can still write a book about Prince Charming saving the princess and slaying the dragon, we all know they'll get married at the end. But that doesn't make the story good nor bad, it's what's written in between that makes or breaks it.

Exactly, everyone fears the cliche so much that they end up screwing up everything just to be different. And where does it get you? You're now known as having one of the worst video game endings of all time just cause you wanted to be different.  A lot of your fans don't even feel like playing your games anymore. Oh but your so new and exciting!

The trilogy already proved your brilliance in the stuff that came before. A cliche ending cannot ruin a great franchise but a bad ending just for the sake of being artistic and different can. One cliched, happy ending would've fixed everything. One ending where Shepard tells the catalyst to pound sand and then defeats the reapers with the fleet she's gathered. One ending where she comes back down to Earth broken and stumbling through the wreckage to her true love who is waiting for her.

Why did it have to be bittersweet, Casey?

Why couldn't it just be this or this? Why did you have to against everything you created in the last minutes of the trilogy?

I know, it'd be like Star Wars ending with Luke failing to redeem Vader, then being blown up in the Death Star 2 and Han, Leia, Chewie and Lando crash-landing on Earth.  Why do it?  The ending we got was so much better.

I got a small question about Kaidan dialogue. Im running my faithful Femshep and I was wondering if I can leatn about Kaidan's biotic squad and talk about Horizon once he is made spectre. Cause After he first woke up, I forgot to click on him for the extra dialogue. Is it lost? Does it change the way he talks to you once he's made spectre? He doesnt seem sure to want to be back on the Normandy so im afraid might have done something wrong. I dont want to reload 4 hours of game but if I have to...

Here's a really crappy pic of Toran Shepard.  The Shep I was trying to get the codes for so I could import him into ME3.  This is how he looks in ME2.  This is my favourite m!Shep face I've made.  Yet when I bring the codes (that I had to rip open using internet stuff) into ME3 he looks like Mr. Wint

So my Star Wars reference earlier got me thinking and here's what I've come up with to explain to my family why I'm so upset about the ME3 ending in a way they'd understand (they're all big SW fans):
Let me explain to you, in a way you'd understand, why I (and others) am upset over the ending of Mass Effect 3. Imagine, if you will, Return of the Jedi. Luke is on the Death Star 2. The Emperor, up to yet, has not yet been mentioned, or revealed. As far as we know, the Senate and Darth Vader rule the Empire.

Luke fights and slays Vader, but is badly injured in the battle. Admiral Ackbar tells him over the comm unit that they can't enter the Death Star to destroy it unless Luke uses a control panel to open a vent into the center. Luke reaches for it, but is to weak. Suddenly, he's brought up onto a previously unknown level of the Death Star 2 by a platform.

There he meets a man who claims to be the ruler over all of the Imperial forces. The Emperor. He explains that the Empire was his solution to the chaos of the galaxy. But that Lukes prescence shows that his solution is no longer viable. Luke has 3 choices:
He can destroy the Empire by blowing up the Death Star, he can control the Empire by seizing control of the Death Star, or he can meld the Imperial forces with the Rebel forces and bring the galaxy together (this is considered the 'best' solution). Luke has no more explanation than this.
Regardless of his choice, he will die and hyperspace will explode and no one is ever able to use it ever again.

Luke chooses one of the options. Regardless of which, we get roughly the same cutscene. In synergy and destroy, the Death Star explodes. In control it shoots out a big blue wave. Next cut scene is of Lando in hyperspace trying to outrun the explosion/wave (why he's in hyperspace and not in battle is never explained). The explosion/wave catches up with him and the Millenium Falcon crash lands on some remote, uninhabited planet. He then walks out of the Falcon followed by Han, Leia, Chewie and the Droids (even though they were clearly last seen fighting on the ground in Endor).

The film then ends with a snowy field at night with a grandpa and his young grandchild looking up at the night sky. The grandchild asks if s/he'll ever go there some day and what s/he'll find there. Then asks his/her grandfather to tell her another story about the 'Skywalker'. You're then hit with an add asking you to buy episodes of Star Wars that take place during the Galactic Civil War.

I think you have to reload the game. He only speaks with you about Horizon before he is a spectre. I'm not sure, but in my playthrough he never talked about that after he left the hospital.

This is very extreme.  :?
I don't hate Bioware for the ending, but I'm disappointed. I hope they fix it.

Alternative endings in a paragraph or less - a mini challenge? Then, soon as I thought that, suddenly my brain got thinking - perhaps we could try to come up with worse endings? can it be done?

Shepard coughed - she managed to inhale a heap of dust, that wouldn't help her. Her mind raced - what the hell just happened? The boy, he was glowing?... Anderson! oh Anderson... a choice - chose - chose to destroy them! Her legs, couldn't move, heavy - something on them - rubble? Suddenly the weight lifted, it was... a figure - a horned figure. He hurled the debris to one side. "take my hand" he stated, flatly. "Who the hell are you?" she demanded. A metallic voice, piercing blue eyes "You may call me... Marauder Shields" Shepard was transfixed, all thoughts of her team pushed to one side in the presence of someone so powerful. She sprang up, they mounted a giant bunny rabbit, and rode off into the sunset.

(please forgive me, it's late and I still lack closure on this whole lack of ending fiasco, I should really go back to my day job)

<snip image>
...Started writing it on here, got too long. I WILL BE BACK.
With a link or something.

Edit: Oops, one paragraph? I ended up with 3,000 words  I really should be writing something meaningful right now. Or, you know, studying for my history final tomorrow morning. Or something more productive than writing about space brats and unicorns.

oooo <gets popcorn>.  This'll be fun.

Just reading the Ken and Gabby thread, it seems they were supposed to have a lot more banter, but something apparently bugged out and tied itself to Ashley for some reason >.>, which also blocks banter with Tali and Garrus in engineering... so we're fked basically.

To my great sadness and embarrassment, it looks like there is a bug here that got introduced just before ship. It looks like the test for "is it time for ambient dialog in engineering" accidentally got switched to "are you good friends with Ashley". How did this bug happen? I have no idea, and need to do some detective work. This doesn't just block Ken and Gabby banter, but I think this blocks some Tali and Garrus banter in engineering too. As it stands now to see that banter, I believe you'll need to get Ashley in your party and take her on missions and/or give Ashley lots of attention by speaking to her and giving her the gift in the hospital. If you have Kaidan in your game, obviously this can't be done, and that sucks.

Though the fix is easy, the difficult part is getting the fix into a patch of some sort. Getting content fixes into patches is much harder than you'd think. It's a giant process. I'll try to get that fix through, but sadly, the odds of getting this type of fix into a patch is very low. It just kills me that so many of the people who care about Ken and Gabby (those of you reading this forum) didn't get to see that content. I tested the heck out of it too for weeks before ship. You just don't now how sorry I am.

Oh WOW. I was wondering why Ken and Gabby had almost nothing to say once they were back on the ship.

I really appreciate Dusty Everman's post, and his apology. It just sucks that it seems highly unlikely that this bug will ever be fixed.

Hey Zehn, You wrote a great ending to Star Wars. Wherever did you get that idea ~.^

I had a related-ish thought yesterday. Imagine you're reaching the end of an epic series, like Star Trek DS9, and you've been following the characters for years. But the writers get to the final episode and think "hey, we need a guest writer for the final episode" and they get George Lucas in, who's never seen a single episode and just makes up an ending based on what little he's heard about the show.

I'm not sure if anyone uploaded this yet, but here is the alternate version of the dialog in the Ardat-Yakshi monastery where Kaidan makes a comment to a non-biotic Shepard.
