Just wow ... I cant believe I actually tried read this crap. Started reading it, okay he doesnt like Kaidan, not everyone does and then he goes into the VA. Kaidan = Carth Clone ... how original. Pretty much stopped reading after I read Carth. You would think Journalist would come up with something better. I have yet to hear a logical reason from people how dont like Kaidan or even Ashley. Always comes back to whiney/racist <_<

I always have to roll my eyes at character bashing like this. I mean, that was a lot of bile and effort for a character you supposedly hate, don't you have anything better to do? Must be a slow news day.

I run into this with my male gaming friends (who for the most part only play male characters when given the option) most often concerning male love interests. They'll decide they don't like the character (Carth, Atton, Kaidan, Alistair, Jacob, whomever) because they're 'bland'. Yeah, they may seem bland to you, you're playing a dude and therefore not getting all of their dialogue bits. It never occurs to them that the female love interests can seem just as uninteresting to female pcs because all their character development is tied to the corresponding romance. Play through their character arch and then tell me they're bland. (And heaven forbid an actor have a career and voice more than one character ever.)

Bah, I shouldn't be reading that drivel, it just riles me up. Here's a Kaidan instead.

I feel like as soon as people find they are good at something, they feel the need to trample on anyone the least bit inferior. I finally got into a gold match though I was almost kicked out. Got through the whole match, didn't even need to be revived that much except one level where I was like brain dead. Get to the end, and I want to try one more match with the same people.

One guy leaves and another joins so I decide to try another match. The new guy sucks and the other guy tries to go with a lower level character. We die on wave 3. But yet as soon as we get to the menu again, I'm kicked out. Like it's my fault?

I don;t understand why people find multiplayer with strangers so much fun. People are dicks.

Anyone else who's played as far as London - is it just me, or when you're killing Marauders etc, do they kind of shriek out your name as they die???  I even thought I heard a couple saying 'Shepard acquired', but now I wonder if I'm just going a bit mad over the whole ending thing...

The person who wrote it had a point in there, somewhere.  It's buried in all the bashing - a journalistic no-no is letting your voice talk over the message, right?  The point the person had (he? she? author wasn't memorable) was that Kaidan's remembered, even if he was "unliked and unmemorable".  That someone who you left to die 2 games ago still lingers, and your decision still matters down through 2 games.  This article screams "decisions matter"!  FTFA: BioWare facilitated my hatred for Kaidan by letting me kill him, and that decision has a huge impact on Mass Effect 3.

Also, the writer is going for low-hanging fruit.  Anyone can take potshots at Kaidan, he's fair game.  Notice how they never touch sacred cow characters (Wrex, for instance).

Another point the article says, from TFA:
Kaidan, on the other hand, fits the definition of a well-developed
character. He has a complex backstory and traits that cast him as the
most virtuous of the Normandy’s crew (much like KotOR’s Carth Onasi).
Ironically, good characterization is what makes me hate Kaidan. BioWare
nailed one of the key aspects of character development laid out in Jesse
Schell’s The Art of Game Design: using the power of the voice.

As Schell writes, “the voice acting in games seems primitive compared
to the powerful performances in film…Because the process of game
development is so volatile, it is expensive to create characters around
their voices.”

Mass Effect often suffers from stiff or wonky animation, but the
series sets a high bar for interactive dialogue and voice acting, which
games like L.A. Noire have built on with extensive motion capture. And
Kaidan’s voice fits his character perfectly, which is why I really can’t
stand him. He’s just too damn genial. Evoking such a strong
reaction—even a negative one—makes Kaidan an unusually memorable cog in
the complex machine of Mass Effect’s narrative, considering I spent less
than thirty minutes interacting with him.

Under the hyperbolic hatred is grudging respect.  He's memorable - not in the way the endings are memorable (RAGE is a hell of a memory marker), or EDI's cameltoe is memorable.  There's also respect for BW's writing ability, and even Mr. Sbarge's voice-acting.  TFA trips over itself in "omg I hate Kaidan!" hyperbole, but the article writer has enough knowledge of Kaidan to belie the "only interacted for 30 minutes" line. 

The writer's flogging the "decisions matter" meme, giving a sly wink with sentences like The way the entire Mass Effect saga handles player choice is ultimately a
greater achievement, at least from a technical perspective. Dozens of
minute decisions carry over from Mass Effect to Mass Effect 2 to Mass
Effect 3...It's not an outright attack on Hold the Line or fan reactions.  It's subtler, yet more insidious.  Deflect to a common enemy (in this case, Kaidan) to channel away rage and catapult the propaganda.  Point made, people take away from the article that "decisions matter", and you can discredit the vocal minority.

I probably should organize my points more, but it's 4:30 a.m. and I spent waaay too much time to analyze & type this.

Okay, your post made me re read that article. I get that he made a point about Kaidan being memorable, but all that bashing and hatred toward him makes it so hard to read. Also it seems like he is jumping all over the place, maybe it's just me. It was hard to read. But even if he says that Kaidan was memorable, he goes back to say that the big reason he hates him is because he had the same VA as Carth.

they wouldnt comment, any of the voice actors I mean.. would be job suicide tbh... well at least it would be silly of them to make any sort of statement one way or the other and Raphael and Jennifer have never struck me as silly

That makes sense. I was just curious if they knew anything about BW's plan to 'clarify' the endings and/or give closure to LI's relationship story arc. Even a tweet as simple as 'can't say' could offer some hope.  Oh, well - I guess we're going to have to trust that BioWare can address this satisfactorily....but I'm standing by with the holy water, mallet and stake just in case.

i rofl'd pretty hard and yeah.. I know its hard, but regardless of whether or not they make any new content.. we will still have to wait for it, games dont make themselves alas... heheh

edit - btw is it sad that I'm more excited about more fanfic from SageQueen and AKG.Writes then I am about end game content fix at this point...

Just wanted to throw that out there, all of the reasons he states for his hatred of Kaidan are the same reasons why I love the character, but hey, I'm a heterosexual female in reality..perhaps that makes a difference...

If it makes you feel any better, my husband actually thinks Kaidan is awesome for several reasons: 1) he has his poo poo together, 2) he doesn't obsess over the past, and 3) he's a good guy. Of course, my husband often tosses around the Carth thing as a joke, but he can easily separate both characters. Ultimately, my husband says Kaidan is his mShep's "bro."

Interesting - I only figured out today that squaddies outfits gave them power bonuses / shield bonus / etc. But why doesn't Kaidan have a squad entry on that page? Everyone else does... are the folks editing the wiki all Ashley-centric?

How would we describe Kaidan's squad powers (as objectively and neutrally as possible bearing in mind we are totally biased)? Personally, I find the squad dynamic changes depending on which shep I have in play - Garrus and Kaidan rock when I'm a vanguard, their all-round cover keeps the bad guys at bay... Playing a sentinel shep with the same team means I get three lots of overload, and I love overloading Cerberus troops... but I couldn't do a true comparison because I choose teams for the banter more than the ability in the majority of cases!

Kaidan's unique powers are Barrier, Cryo Blast, and Reave, with Alliance Officer shared with Ashley and Overload shared with EDI and Garrus. 
From what I can tell, Kaidan, aside from Garrus and Ashley, is the only one capable of hitting all three types of barriers at the same time (EDI lacks a way to hit barriers, Tali lacks a way to hit armor, James lacks a way to hit shields, Liara and Javik lack a way to hit shields and barriers) Further than that, Ashley's Inferno Grenade is really not a reliable way to get rid of armor. 
As far as Overload goes, while Kaidan will never be able to match the power of EDI, he'll be able to use it a lot more often than she does: She has no way to increase her recharge speed. This can useful particularly when you have many enemies around. Marauders and Geth Hunters are not singular foes. Further, Alliance Officer will allow Kaidan to be stronger than EDI in terms of weapon damage, 
When compared to Garrus, the only one versatile enough to match Kaidan, Kaidan's infinitely tougher. Garrus is stronger with guns: Alliance Officer doesn't even come close to the strength of Turian Rebel, but not only does Alliance Officer give a higher bonus to defense, but Kaidan has Barrier. In addition, Kaidan plays off of other biotics for combos (either a biotic Shepard, Liara, or Javik) significantly better and can create biotic detonations. 

As far as being a tank goes, while Kaidan lacks as much shielding as EDI does (75% to 120%), he can also reduce that damage with Reave, as well as hurt his enemies at the same time. Maybe we can put these on the wiki.


Now, back to the reason I actually came here, I'm writing a fanfic, not a shipping one, between M!Shep and Kaidan, but it's told through the eyes of other people. It starts on Horizon with Miranda telling the story, and it continues from there. Let me know what you think.

The thing about this I-hate-VS debacle that people seem to have is because Ash/Kaidan is not afraid to question Shepard, well they're probably the only character who voiced that opinion out and then they pull the "Team Dextro sticks with Shep throughout the end" argument (ok I love my bro Garrus but that argument is getting tiresome). Same reason with Adams, Ash/Kaidan are Alliance Soldiers first and the reason imo why Ash/Kaidan are being super vocal about it is because they think Shepard is the shining example of humanity (ok terrible choice of word here, brain dead atm)... So it seems unlikely that Shepard will join up with Cerberus. Th possibility that Shepard is a clone or had that control chip planted is quite plausible... heck even Shep questions him/herself at the Cerberus Base. And then blowing up a Relay to kill 300k Batarians... seems quite a solid base point to think that it's not really what Shep will do, especially if he/she is a Paragon... I mean could it really be Shep? We as a player know that the events of ME2 are pretty much forced upon Shep but the Alliance and VS don't.

Ahh yes, they're not yes men so I hate them...?!

Thinking about this whole questionable judgement, I was pretty disappointed when Arrival didn't change much dalogue in ME3, I was hoping that the Alliance Brass is just gonna point their grubby fingers and scapegoating my Colonist Shep... or that there is barely any mention of being a Sole Survivor forced to work for the organization that is responsible for kiling the rest of Shep's squad we get like what... only Vasir mentioning it?). Maybe it's just me cos my canonShep is Colonist/Sole Survivor.

I think this all boils down to ... what 70% of people having Ash instead of Kaidan? So not many people have gotten the chance to test him out. Lol when I was at a Sentinel discussion thread... and I said my fave bonus power for a Sentinel is Reave... people laughed off my face because they say "oh I don't have Reave cos Kaidan is dead in my game"  Reave is stronger than Warp damage-wise and the DOT is so nice against those coward smoke-screen Centurion and what's there not to love about extra damage protection?! Defense Matrix makes my cooldown ridiculous and as a Sentinel I barely use my gun so why the heck would I want to pick Warp Ammo as my bonus when I already bring Liara most of the time anyway (can't really be choosy about squadmates when playing on Insanity)... I tend to have Liara/Javik/EDI alot as Sentinel... would be rad to have Kaidan since he gives bonus to Tech and Biotic damage... but this is like the only playthrough where I have Ash alive and I have yet to fully test her out yet. Although I'm getting the ME vibe again so far - whatever Ash can do, Garrus can also do it. She is only sturdier than Garrus but I think I will take his Tech Damage any day anyway.

But I might be bias because I'm impartial to Sentinel - I have Ms. Lawson with me all the time in ME2 on my first playthrough (my canon Soldier) because I don't have to guess what kind of enemy I will encounter. I simply LOVE the Sentinel overhaul in ME2 (ended up being my fave class in ME2 and even in ME3) but the one thing Miri lack is the ability to tank which ME3 Kaidan has... He is the second best tank in ME3 behind Vega, I saw him withstood 2 brutes in an encounter O_O

If you want to have fun, equip Kaidan with the Prothean beam weapon + squad cryo ammo + his own cryo blast... the cryo explosion combo trigger is so ridiculous... Adding the +damage upgrade to frozen targets turns me into a laughing Soldier.
