Okay, so I have a question maybe you fanfic writers can give me an opinion on:
Last night, I was suddenly attacked by a plot bunny, and spontaneously wrote half of a fanfic (intending to finish it today and possibly upload it). However, I went on fanfiction.net just to browse a bit, and found a fanfic someone had written about a week ago with a chapter very similar to the idea I was working on. Not identical, but pretty similar. Now, I'm questioning whether or not I should upload mine... I hadn't seen theirs when I began writing it, but I don't want to cause any sort of plagiarism/idea stealing issues. Theirs was a chapter of a longer story, whereas mine was just going to be a oneshot. Opinions on whether or not I should finish and upload mine?

Personally, I'd contact the author of the other story, explain as you have here, and if it's that similar perhaps include a link to their story as a different perspective on the same idea. I've only done technical writing work to date, not put my fiction out there yet, but about a week ago I found one of my works was on a public site scanned in and given away for free - that made me a bit renegadey I have to admit. I fully expect people to write about similar things (technical writing is just like that). Just don't take my words and pass 'em off as your own or I'll come after you with an omnitool!

I don't think there's necessarily a problem with two stories having the same plot. Even if the plots are the same, you are two different authors and you will write about that plot in different ways and it will turn out to be two very different stories. You'll use different words, different dialogue, just plain different perspectives. There's nothing strange about two people getting a similar idea. I think that's fine as long as one story isn't obviously trying to copy the other one.
If you're afraid the other author will think it's plagiarism, though, it's a good idea to contact him/her and let them know it's not.

@Lady - publish it. If everyone who wrote something and found a similar fic didn't publish then ff.net wouldn't have many stories, lol.

Thanks for the opinions, guys! I'll chew the fat on it for a while, but I'll probably end up finishing it either way. I'll see if I can work some of my inter-personal (meaning: socially awkward) skills and send a message to the original author. Our themes and tones are pretty different, and it's not like mine is very good anyways. Here's to hoping I don't make a fool of myself again.

Please do post it!  I have a hard time believing that the other author would object to you posting it.  You're both basing your writing off of the same basic plot provided from Mass Effect, so of course it's bound to be similar.  There's only so much variance you can have with Shenko before it just turns into something that completely changes the characters.  

I hope you post it and I look forward to reading it! I'm embarrassed to admit how late I stayed up last night reading various fanfic on my beloved Shenko...

mordin's death was very sad, he was one of my favourite characters. i love his singing.
yesterday i did the genophage mission with my renegade playthrough and she killed mordin. it was so horrible. seeing shepard shoot him in the back and him crawling to try to activate the cure, i felt so incredible horrible for doing that to mordin. i had to keep telling myself that this is the alternative playthrough, my canon cured the krogan and mordin was happy. i hate my renegade shepard with a passion now, and i have a bad feeling that she may have to shoot kaidan as he hasnt sent her a letter telling her to visit him and his hospital door is locked. she lied to him about cheating with garrus and then walked out when he said she wouldnt leave.

edit: i just remembered renegade shep is going to have to kill Wrex aswell. Too much death

Well if you'd killed Wrex in ME1 Mordin could have lived!  So there!

been using the datapadd for ages now and still only on 90k credits, It's going to take forever to get 500k and then that's just the first of 3 advanced upgrades. And there isn't enough mail from people, yeah there's a lot but I wanted more Kaidan mail

lol, I'm with you here - I keep redeploying the fleets as often as I can, though really there's not a whole lot of point - one game of MP a day will keep you topped up, plus it's more fun. Would be nice if the bigger rewards actually contributed war assets instead of just bumping percentages.

The mail is fun, but would like more of it... would be very interesting if you could choose to reply, and pick from a few responses to continue the interaction!

I just found a plethora of insanely awesome Photoshop tutorials on making things like nebulas, galaxies, planets, star systems, etc, and those mixed with ME screenshots means... Wallpaper time! *skips off merrily*

Ooh, thanks for reminding me to check my fleets. For someone who sucks at MP, even the little percentages on the app help a ton.

It's so easy though with this world to have fics that are similar in plot/content (read: all of the fanfic writers (including myself!) using the Indoc theory in their endings). You'll be fine to post it imo.

Okay, guys, random questions time. Has anyone seen Gianna Parasini in ME3? After my first pt, I noticed I never ran into her but figured, since I rushed, I just didn't catch her (looking at you, Conrad!). I went on the ME wiki and there's absolutely nothing on her for ME3.

Also, how tall is Kaidan? Everyone in the ME world seems to be around the same height, but when you look at him on the squad screen, he seems to be a couple of inches taller than Shepard. Does anyone know his real height (or Shepard's)?

Got a question about the datpad app (I dont have it) and Kaidan mail. Could anyone post the mails he sends? also, does he only start writing you after the Coup incident?is it diffrent for a faithful Shep / friendship / new romance ?

Gianna is absent from ME3, or at least that's what I've heard around here.

As for height... good question. Kaidan, to me, looks to be about 2 or 3 inches taller than FemShep, not much but enough to make a visible difference. Who's to say how tall humans are in the future on average? I mean, back in the 1700s you were a pretty tall man if you reached 5'4.
By today's standards, I'd guess Kaidan is maybe 6'0. But I'm bad at that kind of stuff.

I haven't seen her either! I'm disappointed we don't get to run into her - several other incidental characters that would have been nice to meet... strange that I met Balak with my main Paragon shep who hasn't done the BDTS expansion (I bought it only recently) and not people like Parasini. 

I guess it might have felt a little contrived to run into all your old acquaintances, or perhaps it was just a case of running out of time to unravel all those potential plot threads (oh let's just tie it up in one of three ways - and keep things simple)

*gasp!* You actually get messages from Kaidan with the datapad app?! That's so cool! Unfortunately, I tried downloading it to my iPod, and it says my iPod is not compatible.

I always wondered what happened to Kaidan after he leaves the hospital. It sucks that we can't even be at his Spectre ceremony.

As for his height, yeah, by today's standards, I figured he'd be about 6'0.

Same here! No vehicle fun on this edition at all - I hated the hammerhead, the Mako was an awesome little dune hopper. I guess since the Hammerhead was in DLC, there may be a vehicle DLC... please let it be Mako!

I would adore more Mako fun.  I loved that thing!  It was one of my favorite Vega/Cortez dialogues, arguing about Make versus Hammerhead.  Garrus and Kaidan were permanent squaddies in ME1 and I figure Garrus got the worst of it because he's so tall.  Kaidan just had to do a lot of repairs on the fly.
