I think Kaidan is way better than Ashley. But They could have made the meeting on Horizon better. I say Kaidan should have gone with Shepard, to keep a eye on her/him. Make sure Cerebrus hasn't corrupt him/her.
Most importantly, to make sure no one hits on him

I understand about not having enough time..Sigh.
What was the music though if you don't mind sharing? I love hearing what music reminds different people of Mass Effect themes.

as tempting as it is to just punch her, it's also worth to go with the dialog sometimes (same with the defenestration)
just glad the ship Shep's mom is on if you're a Spacer wasn't among the destroyed vessels ...

"Some will certainly recognize the dulcet tones of Raphael Sbarge voicing the indomitable Kaidan Alenko. Sbarge once again demonstrates his mastery of script and role changes, bringing the same voice that I loved hearing in KOTOR and slamming it down amidst a brand new body and personality. However, the voice is the only thing that the character's have in common. Where Carth was snarky, and downright confrontational at times, Lieutenant Alenko is a far more by the book soldier, unchallenging of Commander Shepard. Where Carth's motivations ranged from revenge to 'Doing what's right', Kaidan has a thought provoking backstory that makes him a very real person amidst the fantastic squad of aliens. He and Carth share a tendency to moralise, but the logic and general outlook on life is very different. Kaidan is an individual character, and while he is clearly fangirl bait, the baiting is done very subtly. Only a fool would mistake Carth for Kaidan and vice versa."
Amazing!

From here regarding Kaidan and Carth being similar:

I love them both, so I wouldn't complain if they were similar. But that is said perfectly.

Ah, so true.
I'm betting that if Raphael Sbarge had voiced one character, but not both, nobody would have ever made the "Carth and Kaidan are the same" statement. But alas, because he voiced two realistic male soldier characters in two space opera video games, they get lumped together under "boring, whiny, human soldiers with no personality". I'll never understand that logic, it's like saying FemShep and Bastila are the same. O.o

As for Kaidan, his story about BAat and Rahna was a cautionary story about what could happen if you act without thinking. His indention was only to stop Vyrnnus, he ending up destroying the relationship he had with a girl he cared about. He is telling this tale to Shepard not to whine about it but hoping that Shepard will learn from his mistake, hell he even says himself that he is over it. That event might have colored his personality making him cautious but that just means he learned from his mistake. I love that he calculates his actions before he does anything. It shows a strong deep character which is worlds different then the brash emotional character we are used to seeing in video games and movies.
What I'm curious about is if the 'cutting corners' conversation will come back to us in ME3. I can almost see Kaidan saying "I told you so" about the events of Arrival. Adversely, I see Ashely returning to the "Dog and bear" conversation for the same reason.

No silly, Bastilla has a British accent.

Saying that they are both whiners
sends me over the edge of hate into the black abyss. If my spouse died
in my arms and my child went missing for years, you are damn right I
would 'whine.' Honestly I'm surprised no one compared Thane to Carth,
though their personalities are VERY different they still have the dead
wife and lost son thing going on. But I still don't see them the same
either. .
Augh, agreed. I've never even heard either of them 'whine.' Just intelligent conversation you have with someone you're getting to know. Also, Thane cries, so that totally makes him a whiner and less of a man. *rolls eyes*

Do they not like that he doesn't worship at Shepard's feet like some of the other characters? Or is it that he offers sound advice and denies needing to be 'fixed'?
Okay, that obviously hit my 'rage' button.
It does make me wonder if they'd say the same if Kaidan was a female character....

The irony of people whining that Kaidan is whiny always makes me smile. I wonder if they have 'that' tone in their voice when they say it? Eh, sorry, that sort of thing gets my goat. I have zero tolerance for whiners and I've never detected it in Kaidan.

Odd, I can't even became to think Kaidan as a whiny character.
From my point of view, Kaidan is being reasonable and has a good grasp of the situation. He's not crying his lungs out about bad stuff happened to him but rahter stays firm. His denial of being "broken goods" adds quite nicely to his character, not that anything about him needs fixing anyway.
Kaidan's probably one of the most emotionally stable character of all the companions, other being Jacob and Wrex, thou I'm not very fond of Jacob otherwise, he's ok character.

Verrrrry much so.
Avilia, you're right it's incredibly ironic.
But at least more haters means we get more Kaidan for ourselves.

Yes, I love a man with a dark past. Especially when he handles it as well as Kaidan does.
I think Jacob is a really flat character. He just has daddy issues...

I don't mind Jacob, but I do have a thing for men with dark pasts that shaped who they are, but did not turn them into whiners, like Kaidan.
Jacob's nice enough, I just wasn't attracted to him or his character the same way Kaidan had me.
Here, have a Kaibear looking all badass and smexy...oh how I wish I was that glass
