So here's the thing that ticks me off. They won't accept the cupcakes because they are a criticism on their game. They also ignore the fact that we sent them out of love as well. If it was just a message being sent, there's a lot of other things we could've sent to them that weren't so tasty. It's like they are saying "I'm sorry, we don't accept criticism."
So you say there's no other way? That it may impossible to eat all these cupcakes? Let me offer a solution. See that middle paragraph?
The gesture certainly gained our attention both with its creativity and deliciousness. However, while we do appreciate that fans were creative in how they expressed their views, after a lot of discussion, we decided ultimately the reason that they were sent was not done in the context of celebrating the work or accomplishment of the Mass Effect 3 team. This is a subtle, but important aspect in determining how to pass the feedback to the team.
Yeah, that one. Remove it. Now it has nothing to do with how they won't accept criticism or rejecting cupcakes and it's simply about giving them to charity.
But no, they had to put that little dig in, didn't they?
Oh and remember how the media were accusing us of using a children's charity as a shield? Oh look, now Bioware is doing the same thing. And they of course make sure to send the story to gameinformer instead of just posting it to the forums where it originated. Now the fans can't complain or else they are hating children. I just love PR departments.
People need to remember that Bioware is a business. At the end of the day, it's about the bottom line.
While I do think they got the message, the bolded portion--partuclarly the first sentence--bothers me somewhat as well. I mean, it makes me wonder if they would've eaten or passed the cupcakes around the studio
if they were sent to celebrate
"the work or accomplishment." Another thing I can't quite grasp is the action of sending the cupcakes to the kids at the shelter "on behalf of the fans."
Since the charity drive began for Child's Play, fans received a
ton of criticism for attaching the Retake movement to the charity.
Additionally, we all know that fans did not intend on sending cupcakes to the kids at the shelter. However deserving the kids might be of the cupcakes, the cupcakes were
not intended for them. Although the donation was sweet and noble on the surface, donating the cupcakes "on behalf of the fans" to the kids reminds me of what Tycho from Penny Arcade said: "
Child’s Play cannot be a tool to draw attention to a cause. Child’s Play must be the Cause." Tycho made a good point.
Now, I can't help but wonder: in what way is donating
protest cupcakes on behalf of Bioware fans any better than donating to Child's Play since the kids at the shelter were not the Cause?
