ME seems, IMO, to have more of a serious, sophisticated view on the romances (except maybe a few in ME2). The chatacters act much more mature and professional with the situation as opposed to a lot of DA:O. Which makes sense - ME's characters are all battle-hardened, mostly military background soldiers. DA:O was a younger, more naive ragtag bunch of misfits. The Warden, if I recall, was only around the age of 20 ish.
I like both games' romances, but I think jealousy and bitterness would be a bit out of place in ME. I'm glad the writers *mostly* stayed away from that.
I'm not saying that Alistair's quip with the Warden was out of place at all. I thought it fits into his character, him being awkward and all. Actually thought it was cute. But gameplay wise, sometimes once I got this weird dialogue loop in DA where he or Zevran or Lelianna would say the same jealousy lines over again and again. So gameplay-wise, the "jealousy" part can be annoying.
The use of jealousy fits with some characters, but now reaching out to mature audience, I think the jealousy confrontation can be taken out of future Bioware romance subplots. Instead they can make subtle quip about it like Kaidan did about Jacob. Those little subtle things can go a long way if you ask me because not all human personalities are confrontational. I think Bioware can bring more variety now when it comes to characters. If ME3 proved anything is that Bioware knows how to make a character compelling.
And whenever I revisit that dinner date scene, you know where Kaidan holds Shepard's hand and lay it on his cheek, that is so cheesy yet so darn cute. I wonder how long he planned that out. I bet he planned that dinner for hours. Not to mention the scene before the Cerberus headquarters. So cute. <3
