I agree. Bioware has spoiled me so much, I can't even bring myself to play games anymore unless they have strong characterization. Which is probably why the only games I've played this year are Uncharted, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect.

Skyrim was fun for a while, but lacked the emotional attachment that motivates me to keep going. The only "characters" I really fell in love with were my horses (who I gave names to and fleshed out their personalities...). But after all of my horses kept dying in very ironic ways (such as my horse, Agro, died by falling off a bridge with me on her, yet I survived and she didn't) I decided that the game hated me and stopped playing.

Exactly! The emotional attachment is what I need to play games nowadays (also I love being able to customize my character, which is why I haven't touched The Witcher yet). After I married Farkas in Skyrim and realized that conversations were pretty dull, I couldn't continue playing. It's still a great game, but it's not the kind of game I enjoy playing.

I've been searching for PC games with good characterization. I haven't found any yet, besides BioWare's stuff.

CD Project Red did a really good job with The Witcher series.  I've been replaying those when I can't stomach anymore Mass Effect.

But now that ME3 is out and Kaidan is like awesome in ME3, I can't help but feel torn apart...don't know which one is better...:crying:

That is a tough one! Both Kaidan and Alistair gave me plenty of "awww" moments and a few "...hnngh omfg whoa :O" moments. And while I think Kaidan's "sexy time" voice beats Alistair's in spite of the hot British accent (seriously, that voice induces bodily responses that are both baffling and completely inappropriate!), I have to give it to Alistair by a teeny, tiny margin because his dialogue made me laugh out loud in so many places.

I adore Alistair, but Kaidan has him beat hands down in my books.  I mean, Alistair is completely adorable and sexy, but after a while the over abundance of Naivete and innocence from Alistair wears on me.  Then the total 180 he takes if you make him King with in any relationship except with Cousland.  Nope, I love Alistair, but I'm a 100% Kaidan girl.

*edit
@SilverMoonDragon  Those are so awesome... /drool...

Forgot about Carth for a minute there, now he might give Kaidan a run for his money in my books.

Customizing my character is a requirement...actually, I just need to be able to pick a gender. Which is why I haven't touched Assassin's Creed (I haven't played the Witcher because I play on the console, not PC)

About Alistair...I understand why he would dump you if you're not a noble. It made me sad, but I understood his position, so I was cool with it (plus I just became his mistress while he's single, so...whatever? B))
And yeah, the fact that ME love arc is 3 games long and DA:O w/ Alistair is only one does make a huge difference. You get more time around Kaidan, and you see how the characters develop.

I think Alistair is my favourite with Kaidan second, although it can change depending on my mood, lol. Carth would be 3rd on my list. Atton would be a contender if they'd actually let my exile romance him, lol.

I also think that in DA, the characters are more aware of your actions...everyone comments on your relationship with Alistair, and he can even die for you.

But in ME3, if you almost die, Kaidan won't do anything for you even if he's right there...it actually made me laugh half of the time (fall off a cliff, Liara saves you while Kaidan just stands in the back)

Before ME3, Alistair was always my favorite. But now... I think, in my book, Kaidan wins the award by a nose. Alistair is still absolutely adorkable, but he can be a bit too submissive at times for my tastes. I loved that, in ME3 at least, you had the Alpha Male and Alpha Female thing going on with Shep and Kaidan, they were both equally in control and took initiative.
I know Alistair does get better by the end, especially if you make him King, but he's still very passive when it comes to the Warden. And serious Alistair at the end made me feel a bit depressed, I missed his naiveness and humor.
That, and Kaidan fills the "tall, dark, and handsome" role. Plus the stubble. And I like men who look just a teensy bit older

All in all, love them both, I'd be a very happy person in life if I could find the human equivalent of either  And on a random sidenote, I just realized that my oldest brother looks a lot like Anders. Kinda freaky.

Edit: I'm tempted to try the Witcher series, but it seems so dark and adult-themed (from what I've read about it). I love that Bioware's games, while still having a mature theme, also include a lot of light heartedness amidst everything else.

I loved The Witcher and really liked Geralt (although I missed being able to play as a female), but I wasn't that wrapped in Witcher 2 and only played through it twice which for me is pretty rare given the amount of times I played ME1 and DAO, lol

I admit I didn't want to read this, because it follows the endings that I try to push out of my mind. But I couldn't resist and now I must say your blog is simply beautiful. Did you just created a way to help me cope with those endings?

What, no love for Zevran? All the more for me then.  I do quite like Cullen, though, he has some quite interesting character development and I hope he comes back for DA3 just so I can see where he's at now. :D

Glad they updated that bioticy-blueyness thing, I was playing through Noveria a while back on ME1, there's a fight in the garage just before the driving bit, Kaidan used his biotics, then someone talked to us *I can't remember the name, the one who calls her "Benezia-sama", the obviously Japanese one* and Kaidan piped up. Half his face was obscured by glowing blueness, it was sad and quite weird. :?

I tend to agree with that he must think your god or a Jedi since you did come back to live thanks to Cerberus lol. I also will just leave it up to having space magic in the game were magically he doesn't care. and only Liara cares more about you.  I just wish that if we had romanced Kaidan he was the one that would have found our body to make my shepard have a less awarkd talk with Liara about giving me to Cerberus. B)B):whistle: To me, Liara betrayed my Shepard, who is a soul survivor by giving her body to Cerberus instead of  too Anderson and the Alliance.  :(

Yes, this! I have the same issue with tabletop RPGs, too. If I'm not invested in the story, then I just don't care. We had one GM who never figured that out. He'd spring random scripted modules at us and get terribly offended that my characters never cared to get involved, but he never understood that without some kind of emotional hook, my PCs (and by extension, me) just didn't care to get into things. A fight is just another video game level unless there's a good solid reason for it.

@ Ryrinea: The Alliance wouldn't have brought Shepard back to life, though, even if they did have the tech to do so. Liara does get borderline creepy at times for non-romancers, especially if you were rude to her in ME1. And had Kaidan been the one to find Shep's body instead, would he have even considered the idea that she/he could be brought back?

@Frylock: Clearly, you've never been to RPG night with my group of friends  One of my friends bought a LotR D&D rulebook, and at first we tried following it as closely as possible. That became pretty boring, though, so we instead began veering off to the point where we now just have the DM make things up as we go, with silly situations, failed rail roading attempts, and wacky inventory rewards (which we then try to use later in the game to break the DM's rules). I think the whole point for us now is to purposely defy the DM, which is very entertaining.

Yes this is so true! I got 1/2 way through Skyrim before ME3 came out, the last thing I remember doing in my game was marrying some mage (I can't even remember his name) then having him walk away and disappear on me straight after the ceremony. Kind of killed the mood there.

And its nice to see alot of people here also like Alister too :D I think one of my favourite scenes ever is where he gives you the rose in DA:O, its just so sweet and unexpected in a computer game. Although Kaidan's "I lied I didn't come here for a quick drink" during the romance scene is a close 2nd for me. I love his cheeky smile there. I think overall Kaidan wins for me, its nice to see a more mature character in games, rather than the 20 year old usually ex farm boy that inevitably appears alot in some games.

I've written more stories about him than any other character, I have no idea why. :P I'm really hoping we get to see more of him in DA3.

Anyone else eager to hear the news that comes out of PAX this weekend? Sure wish I could have gone, it would be so much fun to geek out.

sorry if this has been answered before, don't quite have the time to read a thousand and a half page long thread haha.

i know it's possible for manshep to start a romance with kaidan in 3, but is it possible for femshep? in my playthrough right now my shepard romanced no one in 1, thane in 2 but i just got kaidan back after he dies and kind of wanted to start a romance with kaidan, but i can't find any flirt dialog in the conversation after he boards the normandy and in the citadel.

Yes, you can start a romance with him, but I think that if you don't initiate the interest flag in the hospital, you get friend-zoned. Which, from the sound of it, is exactly what happened to you.
