@ Ryrinea: The Alliance wouldn't have brought Shepard back to life, though, even if they did have the tech to do so. Liara does get borderline creepy at times for non-romancers, especially if you were rude to her in ME1. And had Kaidan been the one to find Shep's body instead, would he have even considered the idea that she/he could be brought back?
@Frylock: Clearly, you've never been to RPG night with my group of friends
One of my friends bought a LotR D&D rulebook, and at first we tried following it as closely as possible. That became pretty boring, though, so we instead began veering off to the point where we now just have the DM make things up as we go, with silly situations, failed rail roading attempts, and wacky inventory rewards (which we then try to use later in the game to break the DM's rules). I think the whole point for us now is to purposely defy the DM, which is very entertaining.
My husband is a really good GM. He knows what he wants to have happen in the game world and it happens, but the rest is up to us, the characters, he basically ad libs about 80% of each session around what we do and how we react to the major events that happen. He learned long ago the best way to keep the table going was to make us care by more or less letting us script a good chunk of our own arcs - with his guidance as GM.
The trouble is when he wants a breather to play himself.

"I learned a long time ago that there's no way that one brain can out think four or five others (especially when one of those brains might be a rules lawyer), so I let you guys do most of that work for me and adapt my own plans to yours." - my husband
That's why the endings of ME offend him so badly. He understands that you can't give the same degree of freedom in a fixed game setting, but they should have had more latitude to grant more options than they did.
