sorry if this has been answered before, don't quite have the time to read a thousand and a half page long thread haha.

i know it's possible for manshep to start a romance with kaidan in 3, but is it possible for femshep? in my playthrough right now my shepard romanced no one in 1, thane in 2 but i just got kaidan back after he dies and kind of wanted to start a romance with kaidan, but i can't find any flirt dialog in the conversation after he boards the normandy and in the citadel.

Yes, you can start a romance with him, but I think that if you don't initiate the interest flag in the hospital, you get friend-zoned. Which, from the sound of it, is exactly what happened to you.

damn. i'm guessing i did miss that, i was hoping to be able to initiate later so it wouldn't count somehow as 'cheating' on thane or something. thanks for the tips.

@ Ryrinea: The Alliance wouldn't have brought Shepard back to life, though, even if they did have the tech to do so. Liara does get borderline creepy at times for non-romancers, especially if you were rude to her in ME1. And had Kaidan been the one to find Shep's body instead, would he have even considered the idea that she/he could be brought back?

@Frylock: Clearly, you've never been to RPG night with my group of friends  One of my friends bought a LotR D&D rulebook, and at first we tried following it as closely as possible. That became pretty boring, though, so we instead began veering off to the point where we now just have the DM make things up as we go, with silly situations, failed rail roading attempts, and wacky inventory rewards (which we then try to use later in the game to break the DM's rules). I think the whole point for us now is to purposely defy the DM, which is very entertaining.

My husband is a really good GM. He knows what he wants to have happen in the game world and it happens, but the rest is up to us, the characters, he basically ad libs about 80% of each session around what we do and how we react to the major events that happen. He learned long ago the best way to keep the table going was to make us care by more or less letting us script a good chunk of our own arcs - with his guidance as GM.

The trouble is when he wants a breather to play himself. Posted Image

"I learned a long time ago that there's no way that one brain can out think four or five others (especially when one of those brains might be a rules lawyer), so I let you guys do most of that work for me and adapt my own plans to yours." - my husband

That's why the endings of ME offend him so badly. He understands that you can't give the same degree of freedom in a fixed game setting, but they should have had more latitude to grant more options than they did.

Do not get me started on LI and Alistair and Kaidan. Before DA:O, Kaidan had been #1 LI of all games...until I saw Alistair. But now that ME3 is out and Kaidan is like awesome in ME3, I can't help but feel torn apart...don't know which one is better...:crying:

Apparently they're trying to turn their fans' attention to something else than the endings... I'm wondering, will there be a strike at PAX during BioWare's panel? :P

They're going to have to do something at PAX or they're going to lose a lot of fans, I think. They can't just ignore the issue.

I agree. Bioware has spoiled me so much, I can't even bring myself to play games anymore unless they have strong characterization. Which is probably why the only games I've played this year are Uncharted, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect.

Skyrim was fun for a while, but lacked the emotional attachment that motivates me to keep going. The only "characters" I really fell in love with were my horses (who I gave names to and fleshed out their personalities...). But after all of my horses kept dying in very ironic ways (such as my horse, Agro, died by falling off a bridge with me on her, yet I survived and she didn't) I decided that the game hated me and stopped playing.

Exactly! The emotional attachment is what I need to play games nowadays (also I love being able to customize my character, which is why I haven't touched The Witcher yet). After I married Farkas in Skyrim and realized that conversations were pretty dull, I couldn't continue playing. It's still a great game, but it's not the kind of game I enjoy playing.

I've been searching for PC games with good characterization. I haven't found any yet, besides BioWare's stuff.

This.  In fact, the only games I enjoy as much as the BioWare games are the Halo games.  MasterChief is a great character with just enough epic that he and Shep deserve a crossover, somehow.  :)  Skyrim is terribly interesting but I don't give a hang about anyone in it, including my own PC.  That makes it pretty boring to play.

Edited to add that SWTOR is great, too, and that I love my smuggler, trooper, and agent, but that the romance is so frustrating in those.  It's so drawn-out that by the time you talk to your LI again you're a whole lot less invested in them.  Plus flirting with random NPCs is a lot of fun.  :D

No contest there. As much as I love Ali, Kaidan still wins hands down. I prefer my men to be mature, and Ali is just a little too newbish compared to Kaidan.

I tried Oblivion and it just felt sort of empty and pointless. I understand that it was supposed to be wide open, but I just had no motivation to want to go running around.

I get the impression that in those sandbox games one sometimes may get an impression that it is this freedom, complete freedom, of choice of what to do that might introduce a bit of chaos regarding which plots to follow, or disorientation, at first, as what to do. On the other hand, after some time and much exploration without quests, you might come to a conclusion that there is nothing else to do, although the quests have been skipped by you, at least this is what happened to me in Skyrim. I explored the whole map, killed many monsters and... did hardny any quest.

Part of it was that I lacked a clear hook to create an emotional investment, and then the world is just so huge that I got bored running from point a to point b and lost interest before getting there, and when I got there, there wasn't anything to renew my interest in what I was doing, just a tomb and monsters. It all felt really random and unconnected due to scope and scale. My husbad can get into stuff like that, but I like to get one with things.

Disconnected is a good word, IMO.
One of my biggest issues is that the main character is just a nothing. You get no story, no recognition (well, some, depending on what you do), and with the exception of Skyrim, there's nothing special about you. You could be a block of tofu for all it matters, except that I'd actually find that kind of awesome. There's no personal connection from your character to the story, and that gives me a disconnected feeling. Like, "Why would my character choose to risk her life saving the world? Where's her personal motivation, her driving force, her reason for living?"

I love the little bits of being someone special in a game, not just another wanderer. Something like, "I'm one of the last Grey Wardens!" or "I'm Commander effin' Shepard!", instead of, "I'm this person who was in prison for no discernable reason and then the emperor told me he saw me in a dream and then the guards opened a secret passage in my cell and told me to stay put, and actually expected that I would but I followed them anyways and now I have to deliver this charm to a guy in a monestary."

I think that's why people do crazy stuff in Skyrim.. my Best friend got bored in Skyrim and started to spawn large ammounts of Cheese in random Places. in a church, someone who peeved her off.... the tallest montion..evan chaset it down.
as for me.. I need a story, a good story and charcters. witch is WHY i love bioware and RPGs  and why some of my other fave games are story baised...

Well, did my second ME3 playthrough. Yes, the ending does still blow dead bears but at least I have a "good" save to import just in case I need one for the "Apology" DLC.

I also wanted to verify that (at least for the 'destroy' option) the Normandy survivors will be Joker, your LI and the squadmate you took on the majority of your missions. Since Kaidan and/or Vega were on pretty much all of my missions, they were indeed the ones who walked out of the Normandy.

I've done my part. The next move is up to BioWare/EA. Let's hope PAX will give us some concrete info and not the PR two-step!

Not necessarily true. I took Kaidan and Garrus with me EVERYWHERE, unless I was forced to take someone else, then it was Kaidan + whoever. We were the dream team. Anyway, took Garrus and Kaidan with me on the final run, and Kaidan and Javik stepped out. WTH? I didn't even talk to Javik all that much. <_<

Oh, and I did the destroy option too...

That's weird. I took Kaidan and Garrus with me everywhere I could, especially the last mission, and they popped out right behind Joker. That's what broke the ending for me.

You're braver than I am. I only finished once. I have another play through at the London FOB, and I'm working on play through #3. I have one unique Shep left after this one, and I'll likely play my canon through for a try at an Insanity run.

On my only finish it was Kaidan and Garrus who came out behind joker, but that wasn't surprising. They came everywhere with me and Kaidan was my LI.

I started a thread a few weeks ago about this topic and asked people's answers about who came out of he Normandy for them. So it's Joker, LI and apparently the third one is pretty random. A lot of people answered Javik when they said they barely used him/talked to him. I had Garrus as my third person (Destroy ending) but I don't think he's the squadmate I used the most in ME3, I thought it was because he's my Shep's best buddy... that or it's because I had him on the final push towards the beam.

*Rotated my third party member a lot since Soldier Shep + Kaidan means the third party member choice is irrelevant, just need one who can do combos.

And for those saying Skyrim or Oblivion is too vast and impersonal, I strongly reccommend Morrowind (Elder Scrolls III). Not sure how many people actually play Morrowind all that way back since Bethesda technically got famous after Oblivion. The story and your character's role in the universe has a lot of unexpected turn/twist... unlike the Hero of Cyrodill who is destined to close the Oblivion gates or the Dovah'kiin whose destiny is to go against Alduin. Morrowind is still the best Elder Scrolls series IMO by far. Although there is really nothing that can be done about the lone-wolf adventure gameplay... so don't expect an NPC that will warm your heart kind of game :)

There and have some Kaidan...

I just finished Thessia on my latest attempt at running through ME 3. Now I am sitting down to write my fic about post Thessia, including Kai Leng's letter. It doesn't help that upon completing Thessia I am usually about as pissed as I can get, and his letter only adds fuel to the fire. So I'm going to go explode over M$ Word and see if I can get a coherent story out of it.

Braver than me too. After that ending, I stared at the tv for about 20 minutes before I stood up and went to sulk for a good 2-3 hours. Still haven't completed a second playthrough. I have 3 that I've completed up to the Cerberus base before I can't go any further. I get too upset.

Once you convince yourself that the ending of ME3 is not the true ending it does get easier to play, trust me.  Actually I have one more playthrough to attempt and that would be one with my M!Sheploo and Cortez. I won't lie - it's gonna be difficult to have Kaidan only as a 'bromantic' interest for that one!  Posted Image

Thank you for the vote of confidence but believe me I cried my share of tears over the ending. Actually, I hadn't reached the endgame when the firestorm started. One late Saturday night I let curiosity get the better of me and saw a YouTube video that showed the endings, not believing it was THAT bad.  It was.

Afterwards I was literally up all night. Between crying jags and that awful knot in my stomach I still was a wreck when I met my parents for an early Sunday dinner at a restaurant. I put up a brave face but finally broke down at dinner's end. Quite embarrassing to say the least but fortunately we were the only ones at the restauarant.  So yeah - the endings hurt me bad. But I needed to play it again, if only to show that ME3 was not going to get the best of me! Posted Image
