I have something to ask, I haven't been able to get the best ending because of multiplayer, I tried it the other day with random people but some of them got mad at me for not being good enough, so I can't get to see my Kaidan get out with joker at the end. It's not because I am bad at playing mp but I just need to know what to do and to know how it works first. I am level one and the others were level 150.... I really hope that Bioware fixes the ems problem, its not fair to be forced to play mp to get the best ending. Anyway, my question was this, is there anyone who want to play mp with me on Xbox live?

I can help you out. I won't be home for another 2 hours though.

Thank you so much! Actually it would be better if we did it tomorrow or thursday if thats okay?

Wanted to share this piece, I was inspired by the goodbye scene where Kaidan says to Shepard how he's going to "fight like hell for the chance to hold you again." Could be Shepard waking from indoctrination or bleeding to death after the destruction ending. I'm waiting to see what the DLC will be and then make up my mind. Or if it doesn't fit at all then it'll just be my own imagined ending but having Kaidan magically teleport to the Normandy will simply not do for me.

Hey everyone. I am currently writing a fanfic that includes a slightly rewritten Horizon cameo, however I have currently stopped as I wondered on how Kaidan would react to certain lines. Anyone willing to read a small part of my fanfic and give ideas or comments?

My biggest beef with BioWare's current romantic trends is their propensity to write LIs that can play as one way or the other. I like to call it ambisexual (a play on ambivalent) as in the NPC doesn't know what orientation they are until the PC clues them in. I think it necessarily limits what writers can do with their characters. For example, if Kaidan had been written that way, they might have cut out the whole Rhana dialogue entirely in order to allow him to play believably as either gay or straight. And it might cut out entertaining characters like Zevran and Isabella who are openly and unapologetically bi.

Compared to the ME romances, most of which were established before the current trends (I'm looking at you DA2 ...), the DA2 romances just felt sort of shallow even though they were supposed to have been established over the course of a 10 year span. The only character in DA2 who got what felt to me like a realistic development arc was Aveline, but she wasn't constrained by having to play to nebulous player tastes, she could be unapologetically what she was - straight - and she had a logical conclusion to her romance because her writers were not constrained by the need to possibly satisfy a PC who was gay or straight and might take it wrong if Aveline didn't swing that way (whichever way it happened to be). Contrast that with Anders, Fenris, Merrill who all had to go with nothing defined and got stuck with a romance that felt like it took place over months rather than years.

And, FYI, I would argue that had Aveline been gay, she still woulg have gotten a much better arc because she wasn't constrained by the need to please the PC who remained undefined. The writers still could have done with her what they wanted.

/rant

This, so much.  I know they make all the characters "ambisexual" to get the most mileage out of them and give players more options, but I totally agree that it makes the characters kind of vague and ill-defined as LIs - and therefore less interesting.

I seriously wish they would just write straight, gay, and bi characters and make it clear which are which and leave it at that.  I'd actually enjoy a game in which my female PC could hit on a guy and find out he's just not into women, because that would make it feel more real and immersive.  I've been there, done that.  I've also gently let down women who hit on me for the same reason.  So when ALL the NPCs are ambisexual, for me it really breaks the suspension of disbelief.  It just doesn't fit my experience of how people interact.

We all have certain "unrealistic" things in games that just don't fly with us (I'm looking at you, Jack, and your ability to survive toxic atmospheres and gunfire with no clothes on) and others we can happily disregard.  The whole universe of potential LIs being PC-sexual falls into the category of things that just doesn't work for me.  And I think there are probably a lot more people like me out there.

Kaidan being bi (or Shep-sexual) doesn't bother me so much because (although I've never played the original ME with a male Shepard) I've been told that people got a distinct vibe from Kaidan's character that he was interested in more than a friendship with male Shep.  So it was potentially part of his character all along, and his character was interesting and had strong story arc.  So he didn't get watered-down content to allow for his ambivalent sexual preferences.  :P

But in future BW games, I really wish they'd go with something more approaching normal human sexual patterns - that being that most people have a preference for one gender or the other.  And then write really interesting character backgrounds and story arcs that incorporate that part of their personality.

Okay. I am only going to post a very small part of it for certain reasons, if you feel like you need more of the fic for better context. Please say so.

----
“I wanted to believe that the rumors that you were alive, but I never
expected anything like this.” Kaidan yelled out at Shepard, he was
filled with hurt and anger. A small pause was held before he continued,
before he made his final accusation.

“You betrayed and your back on everything we stood for!” He finally said, his disgust for Cerberus had gotten the better of him
now.

“Betrayal?” Shepard immediately snapped back the split second
Kaidan ended. He had lost most of his composure the moment Kaidan
accused him of betrayal. Shepard continued “If you want to talk about
betrayal then look around you Kaidan, the Alliance has failed these
colonies!” Shepard gestured at the scene surrounding them, what should
have been a thriving colony was now almost turned into a ghost town.
----

Now. My problem is that I am not sure how Kaidan exactly would react after Shepard's comeback I had the idea that he would simply shake his head and silence and turn away (this is near the end of the conversation), but I am not sure if it would be in-character for Kaidan to do that.

And if you want to know. Shepard and Kaidan are just good friend in this fanfic.

Hmm, interesting question. I don't think Kaidan would just walk away in silence personally. I think that he's feeling betrayed by Shepard and remembering everything that they discovered about Cereberus in ME1. Kaidan is also incredibly loyal, to the Alliance and to his friends. I think if it's towards the end of the conversation he would throw something back to show his anger. He was there helping to get the towers operational but also the colonists there wanted specifically to be away from the Alliance.

I have decided that irony is BioWare claiming aristic integrity on their ending when Kaidan went from bi to straight to bi with the last was done purely to satisfy fan demand. If Kaidan can rapidly change his orientation to please the fans ... then the endings can be modified too without damaging artistic integrity.

Just for future reference, I'd avoid making ANY comments about bisexuality in the Kaidan thread. A lot of people take those comments as a personal affront, whether or not you meant it to be in any way (in which case, I can see you didn't mean anything degrading against anyone, but others might look at it differently).
I made a comment about it back when I was a new member, and the reactions scared the hell out of me enough that I was too nervous to post for days.

I've learned, the best thing to do is keep your opinions to yourself. Freedom of speech on certain subjects won't come without an insane amount of backlash on the internet. I'm not trying to be rude to you, I know you didn't mean anything by it and I'm not personally taken aback by anything you've said, but (as you've seen) others can and will take hostility to anything that can be taken in a negative light.

Topics to avoid speaking of/referencing/mentioning on the internet: Religion, homosexuality, feminism

But, I digress. Have a Kaidan (and my personal favorite):

A couple of things...
First the bolded bit: Kaidan doesn't yell in conversations. It's a bit OOC for him. In the game, his voice is low and utterly controlled.

Second...what are you trying to accomplish in the scene? The wording about the Alliance failing the colonies is very nice, but it's also something Shepard has no clue about. Shepard doesn't know what the Alliance is doing...and going by Vega's backstory, they are trying to do something. Since Kaidan is Alliance, he will answer defensively, but it's a no win conversation, if that makes sense. If you have a specific purpose in mind for the scene, another conversation track might be better.

Shepard knows that the Alliance and council has failed to do anything for that last two years, or atleast have nothing to show for it. That is what he means by the Alliance failing the colonies. Shepard's views however, might be slightly biased as he also personally feels betrayed by both the Council and the Alliance.

Speaking of fanfic, I'm working on one at the moment and the question came up - could/would Shep or any of the others describe themselves as a Vanguard / Sentinel / Adept / etc.? Or is that just a way that the ME universe helps us, the players, to categorize them? When Liara describes Shepard when she's making the recording - if you let her choose the words - she describes you by your class and a little bit of your backstory, but to best of my knowledge, doesn't explicitly mention a class. And I don't recall hearing others mention their own abilities as a class... though Aria mentions the fact that Blood Pack mercs make excellent vanguards in the general sense of the ones you throw into the fight first.

If any of that makes sense, my head is in 50 places today but this has been blocking me from getting through my first couple of chapters :)

I don't think they'd mention a specific class. For example aside from the codex I don't think anyone in the games has ever described Kaidan as anything other than a human biotic unless I'm misremembering?

I've typically just seen them catagorized into "Biotic" while playing, although some fanfics do mention class specifically. I personally prefer when they don't, instead just mentioning an ability (for example, one fic I read had Kaidan teasing Shep about her tendency to do a biotic charge against her issues, and mentioned her skill with a shotgun, therefore the reader could tell she was a vanguard without specifically referencing it). Sort of like a rogue doesn't necessarily call themselves a rogue, although they might brag about their skills at lockpicking and using daggers.

In game, I've only ever been called a Soldier - Then again, I play as a Soldier :D But it's just a general term used to describe anyone, like a mage could be called a warrior due to the fact that they fight and not because they use a sword and shield.

If THAT makes any sense. tl;dr I think you should hint at class by referencing abilities, guns, and/or fighting style, but not specifically by name.
