You don't get to know!  It's the punishment for killing Kaidan! 


But I got the character achievements in  ME1 for Ashley and Kaidan. I just brought those two along for all those cookie cutter side mission before Virmire. The best way  to get those achievements are to always bring them with you once you get them. The only achievements I didn't get for ME were those ability ones (AI hacking because I don't play the engineer class), but achievements are kind of useless, IMO.

How many different ways can the Coup go down? In both of my playthroughs, Shep always backs down and then Kaidan turns his gun on Udina. I've heard some people mention they have to persuade Kaidan to back down first, I know that you can kill Kaidan, and I know your squadmates can kill Kaidan. What other options are there, or is that it? And does anyone know what determines how it plays out?
I assumed my game went that way due to romance + loyalty + being nice, but I don't know for sure.

I know that as long as Kaidan/Ash's loyalty to you is strong enough, you can convince them that you're right, and you won't have to shoot them. Every theory I've heard says you have to visit them in the hospital and choose the 'nice' options when you talk to them. If you didn't visit them in the hospital or were mean to them, then you/your squadmates end up having to shoot them.

You only have to talk to Kaidan/Ash when you have the opportunity.  You don't even have to be nice.  I picked almost all Renegade options toward Ash when I visited her in the hospital and on Mars, but still was able to convince her I was right about Udina without a persuade check.

But I was nice to Kaidan.  Being mean to him is like kicking a puppy.

If I was writing this as a random stupidity the storyline would be along the lines of Shepard asking Joker to track down Kaidan's address so she can surprise him.  Of course Joker tracks down KaidEn Alenko instead of the KaidAn.  KaidEn comes home to find a naked Shepard in his bed, pctures are taken, scandal follows.  But it does bring the real KaidAn out of the woodwork to hear Shepard's explanation.

And for the random record, I keep making references to Elcor Mariachis now. As if people didn't think I was weird enough calling all my straws "Emergency Induction Ports" and having conversations with "EDI" (my phone)

Final count: 8 scars on Shep, 4 on Kaidan.

The only way to be in a situation where the VS is killed is NOT to choose the paragon/renegade persuade options. (the dialogue on the right side of the wheel)

How the coup can end have different variations depending on:
1) If you visited them in the hospital
2) Whether or not you saved the previous council
3) and obviously if you choose the persuade dialogues or regular one as the event unfolds.

It's easier to gain the VS's trust if you talked to them before the coup and saved the previous council because they turn on Udina in a second.

But if you didn't save the previous council, things get really dicey if you don't keep choosing the persuade options.

And I wouldn't kill Kaidan or Ashley off because if you do ... then that Shepard is quite the backstabber.

I could see a Shepard who never befriended Ash/Kaidan getting into the situation where s/he has to pass a persuade check to turn the VS, but unless you don't have the reputation for the persuade check, it makes no sense to kill Ash/Kaidan unless you just really want the character dead. 

Hell, even my ManShep who had nothing but contempt for Ash after Horizon is going to save her on the Citadel.

Well... that was just my opinion , but it could be a problem when that reputation check isn't passed.

But yeah, it makes more sense to have them alive. If some player don't like them, they can just send them off to Hackett as a war asset just like the individual ME2 crew. It's more practical and sensible.

I'm surprised at the scope of the choices in that given context in ME3 in that Shepard can willingly (or unwillingly but do) kill off his/her own friends. I mean when I saw a youtube video of Shepard killing Wrex, I was like ...  "what villainous act is this? Treason!"

Exactly, you're basically cheating yourself out of a squadmate if you kill them. Also the people who then save them and don't let them back on the Normandy. So pointless.
I've seen the aftermath videos and Joker is mad that Kaidan couldn't see sense but Shepard is just like 'Well we worked for Cerberus, what do you expect'
He talks about Kaidan was there from the beginning ect. With Ash, he just says that he never knew her really.

I think the citadel coup options are based off of;
romanced in me1, cheated in 2 and then lied (no apologies)
saved the collector base
no visiting and gift in hospital

If you did this lot i dont think you get an option and the VS will be killed by shep or a squaddie. Though i wouldnt be surprised if reputation checks are involved too. If youve done the polar oppostie of all these then the paragon/renegade conversation checks wont even come up, the VS will automatically side with shep.

Though in the leaked script in nov kaidan would kill udina with a biotic attack it read as 'slammed into a wall', real shame they removed that imo, just shooting him seemed a little underwhelming, i thought it wouldve been a good reminder of the rahna situation and kaidan being a damn powerful biotic when he loses his rag

hahah yeah.. well upon replaying ME1, ive discovered its much more noticable in the first game then in ME3... although to be fair.. Kaidan is an uber spunk in ME3, in ME1 he looks very young but still hawt

Replaying ME1 has reminded me why I love this game series so much.. Plus after reading fanfics the world feels so much more fleshed out this play through.. is that weird or what lol
