EVERYONE in Mass Effect is Shepard-sexual.  Except apparently Joker, who is robo-sexual.  I was a bit miffed at him for that, but then I ended up finding Legion kind of damn sexy during the Rannoch storyline, and felt like the pot calling the kettle black.

Haha, I ****blocked Joker so hard on my ultra paragon.

Also, I find it offensive that Miranda will not infiltrate my pants unless they contain man-parts. The others are of no consequence.

I was talking about the end of the Mars mission with my husband and I've decided that BioWare simply cannot bring themselves to add biotics to a cut scene. In every case where Kaidan or Liara ends up threatened by a big baddie they flail about helplessly, pew-pew-pewing with a pistol when their natural reaction should have been to hammer down the blue stuff. Ever time that woman grabs his face and slams him against the shuttle I'm yelling, "Hello?! L2 implant, anyone?!"

I presume they do this because it could be a different crew member that has no biotics (Ash in this case) and because "drama" and "story". Does anyone else find it immersion-breaking or am I just nitpicking at this point?

ETA: My favorite three characters, presuming Shep doesn't count, are Kaidan, Garrus, and Wrex/Grunt.  (I figure between the two of them they count as a full-time squadmate  so I can include both.)  Liara and Miranda live at the bottom of my list, right under Zaeed.

Well she did grab him by the head.  Kaidan even said it rattled his implant.  But he has to end up in the hospital, and also that's a pretty good point, that it could be Ash instead.  Maybe it was too difficult and/or expensive to do completely different animations?

And I'm back after a few days visiting my brother.  I think I caught up on everything. 1. Summer DLC still forthcoming, 2. Resurgence pack tomorrow, 3. Nothing earth-shattering at PAX, and 4. Some people in Florida hate teh gaiz (totally signed to join the fight against the dark side).  Anything else important?

I know!

One of my Sheps is a Vanguard too. She had a fully lvl'd charge on Mars, because it's too much fun (she died a lot in the beginning). She'd be on eva, rearranging her face in just under 1 second. Instead she just stood there :pinched:

Lol i know what you mean about the cutscenes, though i wasnt that bothered by kaidan not using his biotics during the mars scene/ more the coup scene as i knew it was originally scripted in. The mars scene annoys me more cos shep seems to have suddenly forgotten about an invention called 'guns' and instead stands there like a tool watching eva slam kaidans head around :pinched:. The kai leng/thane fight annoys me for the same reason, thane does funky combat moves.... shep watches.... thane gets impaled... shep suddenly remembers about guns! I understand why its done for storytelling purposes but i think the scenes couldve been done better, to at least show shep trying to do something, atm it feels like if the camera were to pan around during those scenes we'd see shep standing around picking her/his nose :P

Ok, to catch up since i last looked at the thread.
1] yoda link? SIGNED I have no problems with gay or bi people, pixalted or real.
2] top team members? I mainly use Kaidan and Garrus in ME1 , Garrus and Jack in ME2 Garrus and James after Palavan, then Back to Kaidan/ Garrus. In ME3.. but for the London stage, i use Liara and Javak. Simply because it works for my ending..untill i get the DLC i say, while Shep was knocked out and injered, Javak Made his way to the beam and scarificed him self to stop the Reapers, while a dying Liara sent off a signal to get help. She died, but Shep was found .. alive or dead depends on witch shep i’m playing.
3]Eve, is tha BOMB. I love seeing a different side to the Krogan.
4] the idea of temperamental Pregnant shep makes me LOL.. and kinda sorry for who ever comes into contact with her...

Anything i missed?

I'm thinking for the "Thane vs. Kai Leng" fight and the "Eva curbstomp Kaidan" fight, Shepard didn't shoot so that she wouldn't hit Kaidan/Thane by accident, they were kinda in the way in both scenes. I'm more pissed that Thane didn't just shoot Kai Leng while he had the chance instead of ending up in hand-to-hand combat with him.

As for Kaidan not using his biotics against Eva I blame the fact that he had a split-second to react and he spent it being chivalrous and pushing Liara to the side. It would have been nice if flared up for a second before the head slam though.

I figured it was the banging against flaming wreckage that rattled the implant.  :P  My first run was with my super-sniper Shep.  She could have nailed either of them without thinking about it.  She failed at everything else (witness my nearly-full memorial wall) but that woman can shoot.  Between Kaidan just watching Eva come for him and the whole team (Garrus was with me, too, of course) just gawking at Thane both scenes made me want to kick someone.  And then there was me hanging from a cliff, climbing up while Liara and Kaidan apparently hid behind pews and watched Kai Leng walk away.  <_<

Edit: total sidetrack, but this song is making me think about Reapers and Shepard.  Either I've been talking about ME waaaaaay too much or there are some freaky parallels here.  Janelle Monae's Make the Bus
Edit again: I'm going to cry EVERY time Legion dies, forever.  Cybertronic Purgatory

I was on a thread where people were naming their top 3 characters, and it seemed like every other person chose Garrus, Tali, and Liara. They are probably my three least favorite characters! They are so forced onto the player. If I had to pick my three favorites (character development-wise) I would say Legion, Mordin, and Miranda... Kaidan will be fourth runner up :)

Yeah they feel very forced sometimes too :?

I do agree that those three were kinda forced, but I actually enjoyed Garrus' character and the way they made him seem like your bro. Liara and Tali both kinda had that Anime Schoolgirl feel in that they WANTED you to love them, and that really got on my nerves. Garrus, he doesn't care about your opinion as much, love him or hate him he's still Garrus. It wouldn't shatter his world, and I liked that about him. And his interactions were fun, and he never ninjamanced you.

My top three would be: my Shepard, Kaidan, and Ashley. Miranda third if Shep doesn't count, and Garrus close behind. I hate all the "Choose your least favorite!" threads :? If you're going to hate Ash and Kaidan, at least give a good reason for doing so!

As for the Gay/Bi thing, I'll admit, it bothered me a ton at first in DA2. But as I kept playing, I realized I was just being a selfish idiot who wanted LIs to be one gender only. It's not a character changing deal, I love how they handled it. Anders won't make any mentions of being gay if you're female, or straight if you're male. Isabela establishes that she'll sleep with anything that moves (but I still love her). Fenris makes no mentions, and neither does Merril.
Likewise, Kaidan never gives the impression of being bi if you're female, and makes his interests clear if you're male. The romances have different lines, animations, and stuff, and I think they handled it very nicely. Even if the subject isn't something I'm completely comfortable thinking/talking about, I have no problems with it being there, all these people making an uproar are just stupid.

...
My words left you speechless?

Bah, trying to finish this fanfic. Is it a bad thing if there's no conflict in a plot whatsoever? Aside from Garrus arguing with a bottle of Windex, that is.

Man, I'm bored. Just overhauled my Facebook profile for the heck of it, I now officially live in London, work in Minas Tirith, went to college in House Stark of Winterfell, am a member of the political party "Unicorns", am a rabid fan of the Edmonton Blood Dragons, admire Blaso and the Illusive Man, and kill Reapers in my spare time.
What else can I change around there...

I'm new to this thread but I love me some Kaidan! I just wanted to discuss the gay/bi issue as well. When I began playing ME2 back in Dec, I was happy to learn that gay/bi relationships were available in the game although I played as a straight female. This idea fit well with my liberal sex postive sensibilities. After lurking about the community, I was surprised and upset to learn that gay males were excluded from having a romance option in the game. I wondered what the hell was wrong with BW. Then, I learned that ME3 would include the option and I sang BW's praises, proud of BW's progressive ideals and proud of myself for supporting them. That is, until, the game revealed something very nasty about myself.

I found out that Kaidan, and not some new/other characther that I wasn't going to romance, could be a male romance option. Suddenly, I wasn't so comfortable; for the first time, these ideals that had been abstract for me were being put to the test with a character I cared deeply about. I was upset that Kaidan could romance a male Shep. It didn't matter that this didn't happen in my game; it bothered me that it was even an option. It changed my view of him, but why? I began asking myself what the problem was. I wondered why I quickly scrolled past romance pics of male Shep and Kaidan and skipped posts discussing the same. Intellectually I knew that I was being riduculous and a bigot, but my emotions were not keeping pace with my head. Cognitive dissonance here I come. Why do I care so much that this option is even there?

I've tried to rationalize my feelings away by saying that Kaidan is straight in my game. The option to be bi/gay doesn't matter. But, it doesn't work and, frankly, I'm disgusted with myself that I even have to rationalize it. Why is this a point that should matter to me? Shouldn't I be able to love Kaidan just as much if he is bi? Afterall, being bi does not change who Kaidan is as a person. His peronality, accomplishments and all the things that make him lovable remain the same whatever his sexual orientation. As I continue to think about this, the vague thought continues to arise that he is somehow less manly. And, jeebus chirst on a hockey stick, now my feminist ideals are being put to the test! My head is going to explode! I've bought into the cultural ideal that only 'manly' men are sexy and that somehow a bi/gay man is less manly. I'm stereotyping men; I hate to be stereotyped as a woman and here I am being a hypocrite. Good grief, I need a swift kick in the ass.

So, I've been humbled. This game turned my view of myself on its head and I don't like what it has revealed. I'm working on these issues. But, I can say that I'm grateful that it was a video game that brought these issues to light for me. I can work on this and hopefully my emotions will have caught up to my ideals before I'm confronted with something like this in real life.

lol - no conflict but extra Windex, sounds like it's going to be an epic! And I'm very bored... I really, really am starting to climb the walls - I still cannot play the damn game, I've resorted to doing work. I've just refactored my entire avatar animation system (my equivalent of calibrations). On the upside, I'm pretty sure my colleagues would be all in favor of sudden bursts in productivity, but not at the expense of added grumpiness!

Trying not to sound whiny, must remain positive. I shall cherish my re-run of ME1, young Kaidan, and hope for an overnight miracle in the EA support department. Or I shall continue asking questions, perhaps prefixed by "Badassfully: "

You know, maybe that's why they are not hearing me... that's it, I'm going Badassfully from here on in!

And yes, cutscenes lacking biotics have frustrated me too - like LotSB when Liara puts up a barrier to deflect Vasir's attack, my biotic Shepard was there. But it's the same with the Magic Assault Rifile that you're always carrying, even when you're not carrying one.

I went through rather the same thing. "Why Kaidan?! Why not some new guy?" and then "Why the hell do I care? This doesn't change the stuff that makes him swoon-worthy!" Of course, I'm jealous that the men get awesome Cortez and all we get is flirting with the muscle-bound jerk that calls us by some other woman's name.

I can't wait to make a guy-Shep to romance Steve. But somehow the idea of romancing Kaidan with a male Shep squicks me, and that bothers the hell out of me. I was all over Zev in DA:O and my man Hawkes all dallied with Anders or Fenris. Somehow, the Kaidan thing just tweaked my inner homophobe and that's sad. And weird.

Maybe it's because I'd already been with him and he never mentioned it.  I head-canon Shepard and Kaidan as being very close between ME1 and the beginning of ME2.  I can't buy him as straight if he'll sleep with guy Shep, which means he's bi but he never said anything about it, even in my fanfic world.  If he'd been bi from the beginning I don't think it would be an issue.  [shrug]  I don't know.  Now I'm rationalizing.

Garrus... with a bottle of Windex? What kind of weird calibrations is he planning?!

Strawberrygirl: did you get the "DLC not authorized" problem?

As for the lack of Biotic cutscene, I'm just thinking... that I've never seen Kaidan uses Biotic in a cutscene. Am I right? :(

But yeah having Kaidan shove a biotic push and Udina doing "this is an outrage!!!" would have made ME3 worthwhile even with the crap ending.

Also, there's this I've been trying to find. The wiki says that Kaidan's mom got some transport wind crash something in Singapore... and that's how he got exposed to eezo. I've never heard him mention Singapore before, where's that info from?

My only problem with the way they did it in DA2 is that it encourages laziness on the part of the writers. It's much easier not to give a character like Fenris depth in order to make him play to both genders as believably straight or believably gay than it is to write two separate dialogues that flag depending on the gender of the PC (an approach I would be fine with if they decided that was what they were going to do; of course, if they did that, it's still writing two characters in practice). However, and let's be honest, does anyone think that BioWare/EA is going to reliably take the resources heavy approach when it comes to the future?

Arguably they skimped on their production of ME3 and look what that's gotten them. I like the Cortez and Traynor characters, but they are definitely swinging one way. Kaidan is fine because he's bi and therefore there is no conflict with the Rhana story from his past no matter how you play him.

The part that bothered me the most about DA2's characters is that they grew so little over the course of the game. For a game that took 10 years (supposedly), none of the LIs really changed. Fenris still lived in the exact same broken down mansion and never made an effort to make it seem like home or learn how to read? Merrill spent 10 years never developing any kind of life in the elven slum because she was that wrapped up in her mirror?

At least Aveline got to have a life because she wasn't having to satisfy the needs of anyone's PC by waiting for a character to define her.

Yep :( Have been posting round all the threads and hitting EA support for past 2 days solid, no joy yet. If I get an answer then I'm gonna write up a full report in case it helps anyone else.

I totally get you. I guess that was something that I was trying to get at, why should it matter whether he is straight or not? We still get Kaidan love if he is bi!

...Well, the fic was originally centered around "Shepard's mother visits the Normandy", but now I think I'm going to add a whole subplot with Garrus and Windex.

Hi, welcome!  =]

Wow, an interesting read.  IMO that's another good "use" for video games: to challenge your ideals in a safe, non-confrontational situation.  One can say they're pro or anti whatever, but when faced with it and confronted with it, then you can see your hidden thoughts better, as they're distilled through this world.  You have the opportunity to walk the walk, as it were.  And, most interesting of all, we can all learn from it, as a tool of self-evolution.  So in that sense, game are art, for they challenge us to think critically.  Yeah, that sounds pat and trite, but I really do think it's cool what you said.  :)

Some random thoughts:

*Favorite teammates: discounting Kaidan, because duh :P, Garrus is awesome.  Mordin is great, as is Padok Wiks.  Playing around on my ****Shep, and have Wiks.  Wow he's great!  If only there was a way to keep both, and then have them get into a philosophical drinking match.  Legion is pretty neat, he grew on me so much.  And the one I wish I could have had on my team: Aethyta. Damn, I wish I had her instead of Liara!!!

*Kaidan's words in coup ending badly, from a few pages ago: "Shepard, I-"  Fill in the blank!!!

"Shepard, I-"

-spell my name with an E.  All this time, the Alliance paperwork was wrong.
-left the iron on.
-filed the paperwork to change my name to Carth. How could you do this to me? I thought I could trust you.
