I recently played through ME again, since I missed Kaidan so much, and I got to Virmire and realized that every time, I've always sent Ash with the salarians, leaving Kaidan to arm the nuke. Has anyone sent Kaidan with the salarians instead, and still rescued him? It had never occurred to me to do this...since I always wanted him right with me.

Also, I managed to save the salarian Captain exactly once...never been able to do it since, what do you have to do specially to save everyone?

I usually send Kaidan with the salarians because:
1) He volunteered first. (I loved that he showed initative like this.)
2) Outranked Ashley and had more experience.
3) Worked well with other species (better than Ashley for the time being).
4) It felt like I was going after more people than just Kaidan -- I was also grabbing the salarians he was hunkering down with.

My non-RP and entirely selfish reasons:
1) I like the AA tower better than fighting over the water. Saren holding Shepard over the edge of the tower looks cooler.
2) It's neat to listen to Kaidan give instructions and status updates over the intercom as the shadow team makes their way inside. He demonstrates himself as a leader independant of Shepard.
3) I like Kaidan shouting to hurry up once I arrive at the tower and if I really rush, I can find Kaidan taking cover somewhere and returning fire before the cutscenes start.
4) I don't really care for the weak-soldier-tossed-over-shoulder part (whether it's Kaidan or Ashley). It just seemed a bit over the top although the hand extended part is cool.
5) It can be hard to watch, but I feel that the scene of the person staying behind with the bomb while Normandy flies away shows proper respect to the fallen solider. We don't see the reaction of the person staying behind at the tower.

In ME2, I made Garrus the leader of the second team in the suicide mission on my first run, having no idea if I was sending him to his death, but he was the guy I trusted the most due to his experience and history with Shepard. It was the same deal in ME1 where I trusted Kaidan to get the job done more, even though the stakes were high. It just felt more natural.

Edit: To save the Salarian Captain, you must accomplish four objectives along the way. This link explains it very nicely. If you hear over the radio chatter that he died, then you took too long to get someplace. Just reload to an earlier save.

As for Virmire, I just assigned them their missions based on their skills. I figured Ashley would be okay because she's good at shooting. So, yeah, wound up saving Kaidan. Did not know that there was literally a choice to be made and I was completely FLOORED upon finding out.

But then you don't save your own marines hunkered down with the bomb.  And there is supposed to be more than just Kaidan/Ashley at the bomb.  (Not sure how the divide truly is, but there is one nameless salarian at the tower and one nameless marine at the bomb site, which makes it even from a visual gameplay perspective.  Seeing Kirrahe at the tower doesn't count, since he's not always there and yet lives regardless.)

This is pretty neat.  Last time I was up there taking pictures, he chased Saren around the burning remains of the AA tower and wound up getting the last shot in.

Probably because you hear them shot down over the radio before Saren even shows up.

About Virmire: during my first run I've even shouted "Damn it, Ashley, throw Immunity and Shield Boost and RUN!". Never did any good. Since then, I'm very cautious in assigning tanks on commanding roles, which saved Grunt's tail as possible candidate on Distraction Team Leader.

Back to Virmire, I think I might have to reload my Virmire saves, so that I can send Kaidan with the Salarians, bc it sounds pretty neat, and I've left that stone unturned for too long....

If there is another situation in ME3 where Shepard has to send one of her team off, similar to the sending Kaidan/Ash with the Salarians or the Leader of the Fire-Team, Kaidan is definitely going. (As long as did doesn't get him killed) I agree with Gilsa, I sent Garrus with the Fire-Team because Shepard trusts him and knows he can do it. Same thing with Kaidan, I'm willing not to have Kaidan by Shepard's side if he means him doing something good. Though I hope for at least 90% of the game that Kaidan will at least be on the Normandy and/or by Shepard's side.
