Australian? Why is that? First, there is no such a thing as "australian" language, if not taking tribal dialects, which is, I belive, not our case. Second - Glushko, Shevchenko, Bondarenko, Timoshenko - are absolutely typical russian\\ukranian(mostly)\\belorussian surnamesI'm not sure, but I know Alenko is a name commonly thought to be Australian. I always thought of him as Canadian personally.
Well, the fact that his pregnant mom chanced to travel through Singapore when it happened (by the way, I highly doubt this "accident" was...well, accident) does not tell much. And also his face has none of "asian" features (if you're talking about chinese\\corean type here).Always figured he was at least part Asian because I think he said something about the in utero eezo accident happening in Singapore.
Another point is name itself. From what I can get from google - it exists, but is really-really rare.
One of 100% matchings is a romanized japanese word (originally spelled as "kwaidan"), which could somewhat be translateed as "ghost\\horror story" (and there is a same name horror film). A wierd name for a kid, even for a zero-exposed one (in case his parents did not suffer from veeery ill sense of humour). Only existing "Kaidan" I've found so far is an american interior designer Kaidan Erwyn (no personal background provided).
But. "Kaidan" still exists widely as surname. And I even found an article about its origins (yahoo!) - it is defined as ukranian-turki one, and its meaning goes either from turkish "kayde"(rain) or turki "Kaidan"(tied one, slave), it also notes that originally it could act as first name as well. Could give you a link,if you want, but it's in russian. Main thing is that it does have turki language group origin, just as I thought, and also related to Ukraine, same as his surname does.
So, wherever he was born\\raised and lived on, his dad seem to have deep eastern-europe\\mid-east roots (I'd still think of Bulgaria or Romania, Ukraine - probably, like Сrimea) . And they still had some kind of "national" feelings, I suppose. Since they don't call him James or Steve, but chose quite a rare name of same origin as their surname was.
ps: Also, there is a river in eastern part of Russia that has such a name. Word "gaitan" means a traditional necklace. Oh, and Kaidan is known as a name of khan Baty's (XIII century) war leader.
pps: if no one was really interested in all these ethno-linguo-stuff - sorry, I just really love understanding charactes, digging in lore and etc. Probably, could be interesting to someone else as well.

It just popped up once while I was searching but I think it's mainly considered a first name these days. The Aussies have incorporated a lot of Aboriginal words etc into their language (as a side point, not related to Alenko). Another option that came up was that it originates in Hungary but I don't know.Nrieh wrote...

Haha, it definitely seemed like it! Whenever either of us tried to join the others party it would come up with an error saying that the system couldn't connect to the party network.Ajna wrote...

Ha ha! "Harry Trotter" Lady, that is pure gold.
Since I can't sew, I looked online, and there are some decent Miranda costumes out there, but for like $100-$150. Still probably cheaper than a sewing machine. I'll think about it.
Also, I totally agree with legbamel that he was a lot whiter in ME3. I rather liked (in ME1 esp) that there was a lot of ethnic indeterminacy about the human characters. Even in the books they mentioned that Kahlee's blonde hair was really rare since a lot of recessive traits had all but disappeared. As for Kaidan, I always thought there might be a little Asian ancestry, but also possibly Middle Eastern and even Hispanic. I miss his tan. *sadface*
I also totally thought Ashley was Hispanic, but apparently in ME3 James Vega took that role and Ashley got a complete overhaul into space pageant queen.

Shade of skin could be abit darker in ME1, true, but it's hard for me to say, whether it was a result of poorer engine and textures and\\or my laptop video or something else.As for Kaidan, I always thought there might be a little Asian ancestry, but also possibly Middle Eastern and even Hispanic.
I'd possibly think about hispanic origins as well, if not for his turki name and obvious turki-ukrainian surname. And, oh, I just returned from Istanbul yesterday, you know, that's where the feeling about his turki origins came to me. I hope my husband didn't notice me staring on young turks..
