It's an alternate ME universe that has Kaidan and Shepard meeting when they were much younger and Shepard is given the earthborn sole survivor background where he grew up with the gang tenth street reds on earth (if you had this background you met one of Shepards old gang members in Mass Effect 1 so it doesn't do away with all of the ME lore, just when Kaidan and Shepard first met).
It's really fun to read because Shepard is a lot younger and rougher around the edges than we're used to and Kaidan's sort of this rich kid who seems like a pushover and Shepard is pleasantly surprised to find out there's more to him than meets the eye. There's also a really cool part where it explains how Shepard got his signature head scar.

Understandable, renegade is rare for me to accept. Some may not like how they paired up Kaidan and Vega (I personally do). But regardless, it's been a good read.AndreasShepard wrote...
Thank you! I love the paragon Shep/Kaidan route but I will definitely check out proof of loyalty one of these nights, my little brother is in the room with me so I feel weird trying to read that right now lol.

I love Kaidan a lot, but I have to say the Cortez romance seems more balanced and real because the two of them can just come right out and say what they feel. Kaidan and Manshep can't do this until much later. Combined the fact that this happens late game and with the ending how it is, the romance is quite unrewarding after Manshep waited so long to get his hands on Kaidan.
