I don't think Kaidan ever went mute, but I have run into MaleShep going "mute" in all 3 games, in which only subtitles appeared. It's not too game-breaking though, it's barely noticeable in ME2 and ME3.

Kaidan never was mute, but some of Shepards lines are but I turned on subtitles knowing that was going to happen.  In ME1 they'll call you "Ma'm", "Lady", and even once "Princess" (unless you recruit Garrus first).   Once you hit ME2 it's all "Sir", etc from there.   On PC you're supposed to pick the default Shep, so once I got him into ME2 I used a editor to change his name.   

Ok, so since I was *still* unhappy I didn't get the "breath" scene at the end of my second Shepard, I finished all the fetch quests at once just before the TIM's base raid.  Turned them all in and did a quick run to the end, got "breath"... /sigh.   Still hate the ending but that little scene makes it just a tiny-bit-better.   No, I don't now why it bothers me so.

The breath scene gives us hope.  That's why we want it.  But the more I see it, the more I'm convinced they just put it in to appease fans who wanted Shepard to live.  I'm not sure they put much thought into Shep's surroundings during the breath scene, which people have obviously been picking apart meticulously.  

I'm glad they've been paying attention to the fan reaction though.  I'm half looking forward to, half dreading the EC.  Part of me thinks more closure can ony be a good thing, but my smarter half keeps telling me that BW is going to rip my heart out all over again.

Plus, I too couldn't sleep last night so I was up late finishing star-brat's convo and reading "Proof of Loyalty"  and other FanFic.  That is so NOT like any of my Shepard's I was appalled at his actions toward Kaidan.  That sort of think isn't my kink --no offense to anyone-- but it was interesting to get a glimpse of the darker side of someone's Shepard.

I'm fine with my Shepard dying IF the death feels meaningful, in fact, I expected to die next to Anderson while watching the crucible go off my first time.  That would have left me feeling like my Shepard died a hero.   Control, in theory it wouldn't be so bad if Shepard just replaced star-brat as the "Catalyst" since it controls the Reapers that's what should happen with Control, they could even add a scene where Shepard says goodbye to the LI.   Plus it'd answer --at least give a firm foundation to believe-- that Shepard has permanent control of the Reapers and it wasn't some trick.   I could see a few of my Shep's accepting Control under that condition. 

I too hope and worry about the EC.  "Clarification" and "Extending" can take many forms, but the constraints they are under means the ending can never be as good as it SHOULD HAVE BEEN.   They wanted a "Lost" or "Inception" type "speculation for everyone" open-ending but failed to even set it up satisfactorily.  


In my "head canon" Shepard lives and the Normandy crash was a blood-loss-induced dream.  Kaidan finds Shepard in the ruins of the Cidadel and calls for a med team.  I hope the EC will make that Canon but fear it won't.
